In this video we look at how our Gobi Roof Rack has held up over the past year on our Jeep Grand Cherokee (WK2). We also look to see if the roof rack has caused any damage to our WK2 and we are disappointed by what we find. If you are looking for a Roof Rack for your WK2 or other vehicle you want to watch this first!

I ordered my Gobi rack for my 2022 4Runner November 22, 2023 and it came in the first week in February, so about 10 weeks +/- and the new racks now come with a roll of protective film tape for the fairing. Love the rack so far........looks great.

Thanks, nice video. I just ordered a Gobi rack for my 2 door Jeep Wrangler yesterday. I was told the current wait is 16-20 weeks. The wind deflector is adjustable, and I’ll be keeping mine up off the roof about a half inch, and watching it carefully to make sure it doesn’t make contact.

Folk have tried that fix and it generates a ton of noise. The fix is putting down 3m clear bra first and then having it tight to the roof. Good Luck!

I had one on my 4Runner and they are great. The deflector was a major downer though, but it is what it is. Best thing it to tape it first which I wish I'd known. They do take a long time to get, but I think they are worth it. A little on the heavy side, but a sturdy rack for sure..

Hi. Love the video. Exactly what I was looking for as I research different racks for my 2017 JGC Limited. This one is on the short list along with Chief and Off-road Animal. I'm curious if you can help me better understand the limitations of the WK2 roof weight capacity? It seems with the OEM capacity is only 150 pounds, but does that mean the actual integrity of the roof or with the OEM roof rails/rack?, so does adding something like this GOBI make it substantially more or is the WK2 roof still the weakest link here? I'd like to be able to throw on cvt hard shell tent that is around 200 pounds but I'm just not sure if I'd be able to do that and I don't know enough in regards to the ins and outs of this specific roof situation to make a good judgement call. Would LOVE from insight from you if possible.
@ProdigalOverland
@ProdigalOverland 4 жыл бұрын
Scott Schopman Hi Scott! So I can tell you that you take off the OEM mounts. And that the weight of the rack would be coming down the edge of your roof. Not the center where it would be the weakest. But I’m afraid I can’t offer specifics about the weight. I can only say we have not had an issue. I’d reach out to others on some of the forums that have mounted RTTs to see if they have had issues. Sorry I can’t help more.

I ordered a Gobi rack September 2019 was told the same thing . 3-4 months wait time. Here it is august of 2021 and it was just finished . Paid them the money now waiting on themto ship it out , I probably won’t see it till mid October. I will say that Gobi did do several follow ups with emails about the delay times . And of corse we all know that 2020 was the year of the COVID!!! So with that being said it did add delays to there production. I wasn’t upset about the long wait time. Plus you don’t get billed till the rack is built. On another side note . I didn’t have the full amount when they called me and told me it was ready i asked for a month extension and they gladly excepted and were cool about it . So yes build times are a lot longer now .

I have the same Gobi rack on my 2015 4Runner and I had the same line of dirt on top of a fairly deep line of rust along with rust speckles from the line. The rubber seal on the deflector along with accumulated dirt will damage the paint and body. The protective rubber seal on the deflector is too hard and vibration and rubbing from driving will cause this damage, there was not a protective clear film on the roof where the deflector meets the paints [it was this way when I bought the 4runner]. I called Gobi twice and they weren’t much help and did not admit that this was a chronic problem. I asked for a protective film twice and never received one. Their office sounds like it’s run by teenagers without much product knowledge. The rack itself is well made and durable. When I removed it to take the car in to the body shop for repair, I had it painted and reinstalled without the deflector. It’s a little noisier but I won’t have any paint damage or rust again. So if you get one don’t install the deflector. I even tried to install the deflector without it contacting the roof but it was way too noisy and the wind vibration was terrible.

Looks like deflector is plastic? Could trim it more narrow so it doesn't touch roof. Or mount higher with redrilling if necessary. Did the rack require drilling into roof? For your paint looks like you just need a clearcoat coat or two. Plenty of youtube videos on how to diffusily mask off that strip (folded paper) and apply either a 1 part rattle can clear or a better 2 part with an hvlp gun from Harbor freight. 1 part may peal. I would practice beforehand on something until you can blend clearcoat effectively. Like spray a base and clear on some metel or something.

As of July 23, 2020, "GOBI Rack Production lead times are 12-16 weeks minimum from the time you complete your order." You can see that in the red "Request Order Status Update" link on their home page. The fact they have such a prominent link to handle order status is a bit concerning, oh well :) How do you like the "rise" on the front? Are you planning to mount lights? I understand there is a "no rise" option that's not advertised, where it's flat all around. May be a good option for some use cases.

I feel like he spent way too much time discussing possible paint rub under the air dam, that in most cases, will probably never be removed after install. For those who are still considering purchasing this type of rack, Gobi sent a clear protective tape type strip with our rack to I stall under the rubber pad to prevent rub spots in the paint. Not sure when this guy ordered his rack, maybe they weren’t providing the clear tape strip at the time, we purchased ours in 2020. As far as the lead time, we purchased in May and got it in August. They said 12-15 weeks it was around 16 in the middle of the COVID pandemic. It’s well made and worth the wait.

No, when I raised mine off the bodywork it kept vibrating in the wind and making a terrible noise. I ended up lowering it onto the bodywork and placing a strip of transparent plastic tape under it. And yes before putting the tape on it wore a hole right through the paint so I had to do a paint repair job by hand myself. Body repair shop quoted over $2000 AUD to repair the paint as they said they had to repaint the whole roof.

Wish you would have addressed attachment to roof. It appears that factory roof rails have been removed and a proprietary rail installed- is that the case? [ok - just found your install video at kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rJhhnLSiuZ-1aXU.html] One reason I ask is that I keep seeing roof rack manufacturers touting huge weight capacities such as 300/600 lbs. However, if the factory rails are the point of attachment, the Jeep manual says you are limited to 150 lbs - including cross rails, basket or box and cargo - making it unsuitable for roof top tents, standing on the rack (I cringed when I saw you do that in the other video), etc. The larger rack limits (which represent their own failure limits) become irrelevant. Now, I’ve seen OffRoad Animal say they substitute new stronger attachment points for their rack to attain higher practical capacities than the 150 Jeep limit = what about Gobi? BTW, Chief says “FOR MAXIMUM SAFETY DO NOT EXCEED MANUFACTURERS ROOF WEIGHT LIMITS. Our load ratings represent the maximum mechanical forces our roof rack system can withstand before failure. ”
@ProdigalOverland
@ProdigalOverland 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Bruce. You do indeed take off the factory rail mounts. We have two installation videos on the Gobi rack on our channel. One for the ladder and one for the rack itself. You could check those out to see how they are mounted. Thanks for the question!
@brucedarling4751
@brucedarling4751 4 жыл бұрын
Prodigal Overland Thanks Brad. I edited my comment accordingly. Still skeptical that using original attachment points with replacement by a stiffer rail would allow us to exceed the Jeep limit of 150 lbs. Worst case: panoramic roof fails and warranty claim denied because stated weight limit was exceeded.
