Budget boat buying how important is an autopilot when buying your dream boat for doing America’s Great Loop or the Bahamas. Boat autopilot is very important when buying or looking at your 40 year old trawler for living the American dream.

Detroit to St Augustine no auto pilot, 69 Grand Banks with cables and pulleys. On other Grand Banks I saw one that hooks on to steering wheel and I saw another that hooked up to the cables in engine room, both were electric servos type....

My Dad's boat in the 60's me and my brother's took turns driving on flybridge while Dad slept, we had to wake him up when we got close to Catalina Island then he took over and drove to anchorage on back side Cat harbor......we were Dad's auto pilot 😅😂😅

Never used Autopilot on a boat but I never made a huge trip. I think those long straight runs would be tiring without autopilot. Just the able to get up and walk around without having to have you hand on the wheel would be worth it.

No autopilot is a dreadful long run. An autopilot allows you to be the captain and monitor and enjoy the rest of the systems and the world around you

I WANT TO GO DO THIS DREAM LIFESTYLE!!!! I have found the boat I want (yes, it has autopilot!) at the price-point I can afford and am trying to get my ducks in a row before pulling the trigger, yet to find a company that will insure a 40 year old boat. Ideas, anyone? For me, I can't imagine having a trawler without autopilot. Long runs at a slow speed...why on Earth would anyone want to just stay at the helm for hours on end?

Hello Rusty, just to be clear and to respond to your very last line, yes an auto pilot is a godsend. I can't see doing a long trip without it. BUT, as Capt Paul stated, even though you are on auto pilot, you must sit your butt at the helm...all the time. You watch your engine instruments, nav, and observe 360 around you. The auto pilot doesn't know to steer around logs, jetskis, other boats, etc. I don't even let my auto pilot complete a turn. I only use for long straight runs. Place a way point down range and let er fly.

@@barryg.291 Agree!! Never be stupid and you'll probably not get into trouble! LOL. There's a time and place for everything...knowing when to use the autopilot and when not to is a hugely important thing. If you want to go use the head or get a bottle of water or even go make a sandwich, do so when your surroundings allow it. Thanks, Barry!

I tell people that if I had to choose between autopilot and motor, I would take the autopilot. You didn't cover autopilot modes. Hold heading vs. Nav I autoroute on my phone via navionics and send the route to the boats Simrad plotters On "Nav mode," the boat makes all twists and turns while doing 25 knots Yes, I'm at the helm on watch, but this is a lot 9:06 less work. Also, I'm able to make some manuel steering adjustments without disengaging the AP Great Video!
