⛩ KUSANKU クーシャンク of Isshin-Ryū (一心流) by a founder Tatsuo Shimabuku,
Perfomed by a Spanish karate athlete, a rising star Morales Ozuna G. she won gold medal 🥇 at Karate 1 Serias A event by WKF held in Pamplona 2022.
🔻Its a wanderfull kata not seen so many times in wkf tournaments, it quite refreshing to see some new katas done by a top karatekas at this level of tournament
🔻Morales done a quite good job on this one, besides that slightly flop at the half of kata, its a strong one, we also think that she deserves a gold. Well done.
🔻Kusanku is one od the eight weaponless kata in Isshin Ryū style, or a form, as someones say teaches us to fight at night 🌑
🔻One is certain, that kata is a attractive and interesting one, and need to be learned.

Izvedena od španske karatiskinje, zvezde u usponu, Morales Ozuna, pobedila je u finalu Karate 1 Serija A, dogadjaj organizovan i u kalendaru WKF u Pamploni 2022.
🔻Predivno je videti kate koje se ne rade puno puta na wkf takmičenjima i baš je osvežavajuće videti nove kate kako rade top karatisti na turniru ovog nivoa.
🔻Morales je poprilično dobro odradila katu, bez obzira na minijaturni disbalans na sredi kate, jaka je i oštra bila, mislimo takodje i slažemo se sa sudijskom odlukom da je bila bolja.
🔻Kusanku je jedna od 8 kata vez oružja koja su karakteristična za Isshin Ryu stil, gde kobudo ima jednak status u učenju kata u odnosu na bez oružja, kako neki kažu Kusanku je kata koja nas suči da se odbranimo u noćnim uslovima.
🔻Jedno je sigurno, atraktivna je, interesantna i mora se naučiti.

Cómo practicante del estilo ISSHIN RYU veo un Excelente Kata... Ojalá muchos lo elaborarán así... Pero al evolucionar kimei, sanchin, teming, potencia, explosividad, equilibrio y mejores posturas algunos no lo aceptan... A veces se cree que el Kata Tradicional es elaborarlo de una manera chambona o en pocas palabras con motricidad gruesa y No debe ser así... Sin ánimos de ofender pero; Nuestro estilo ISSHIN RYU es uno de los más criticados por exponentes muy regulares del estilo... Felicito de todo corazón a La Karateka Morales; Gran Exponente de este Kata Kusanku, Gracias por demostrar un estilo ISSHIN RYU con Honor, alma, corazón, veracidad y decoro.

The vertical fist may be being used but the rest of the kata is not Isshinryu at least not how the kata is traditionally taught.

As Isshin ryu is rarely represented in international competitions, I would think people in the comments section would be more amiable. She is performing in what has become the WKF format. So while it may not conform to traditional Isshin ryu , it still gives the style exposure.

Give Isshin-ryu exposure by doing the Isshin-ryu version. Don't mislabel it!

Yes, If the video was not labeled, I would have no idea what style this was supposed to be. What is wrong with performing kata the traditional way? Do you lose points for that? I do not understand how they judge these events.

Could you guys tell me what's a difference between what she did and traditional practice. I trained Shotokan as a teenager, about 20 years ago. So, I don't remember much.

This IS NOT the Kusanku of Isshin-ryu Karate. As stated by others, the vertical fist with the thumb placed on top, is the only Isshin-ryu factor. The angles of attack were different along with various hand and foot strikes. She did an excellent Kusanku kata, crisp, clean and powerful. It just wasn't our version.

@@zenshiatsufisioterapia ABSOLUTELY NOT ISSHINRYU version as taught by Tatsuo Shimabuku, Angi Uezu, Kichero Shimabuku, Tyoshi Uechi, Arsenio Advincula and SO MANY others. Google any of those names performing Kusanku kata and you will agree! I have been active in Isshinryu since 1975!

@@MonguSu1952 It is ofcourse the Isshinryu Kusanku , but modified in order to match the WKF standards . I cross checked with Kusanku versions of different other styles , it exactly matches the Isshinryu version . All other styles are also stylistically modified for competitive purposes , the same is happening in this Kusanku too .

@@MMANEWSMALAYALAM IT IS NOT the Isshinryu version! I have been in Isshinryu since 1975 and have NEVER witnessed this version by ANY practitioner of the style! If it was modified to fit WKF standards, it was COMPLETELY OVERHAULED and is 98% non Isshinryu! It is misrepresenting the Isshinryu Kusanku! You should check out a few of the Isshinryu videos out there! As I mentioned in an earlier comment, I saw the Isshinryu vertical fist and a fairly accurate floor pattern but the stances were deeper than the Isshinryu version. SHE did a GREAT performance and I commend her on a job well done.

Isshinryu actually teaches all of the kata from both Gojuryu and Shorinryu, but only eight total empty handed katas are on the official belt progression. Isshinryu also teaches quite a number of weapons katas officially, and Arcenio Advincula hierarchy dojos tend to also teach escrima and kama in addition to the three traditional weapons of Isshinryu.

The ONLY kobudo that Tatsuo Shimabuku introduced into Isshinryu were three bo kata, two sai kata and one tonfa kata. They were part of the official curriculum. Agena no Sai was introduced by him some years later so some of the US Marines never were taught this particular kata. He did approve of a bo/bo kumite and a bo/sai kumite "kata" a few years before his death. That's my understanding, anyway. So other weapons and weapon kata may have been introduced by various instructors since 1975, but they were not originally included.

didnt know isshin katas were allowed. does this mean kata of any style can be performed as long as it's analogous to a kata in shotokan/shito/wado/goju?

Yes, if kata on official wkf list, and approves ruy-ha for that style, it can be done, they insist also on pronunciation of kata, it must be pronounced just like from official list. For instance you have Suparimpei, in shotokan cannot be pronunced hyakuhachiho, it must be suparimpei.

As a long-term Isshinryu student who knows Kusanku, I'm just wondering what degree of black belt she is? She is nowhere near old enough to be a 9th or 10th Dan, but normally Red Belt in Isshinryu is reserved for 9th and 10th Dan. Weird. Anyway, this version of Kusanku is somewhat different than what we practiced in Isshinryu 23+ years ago. As others pointed out, the Vertical Fist is the only real Isshinryu adaptation I see here. i'm pretty sure the Double Front Jump Kick is from Chinto Kata, not Kusanku, so what she has done is almost like combining Chinto and Kusanku into one kata.

The red belt is because in WKF, we compete with only 2 belts, red and blue, no matter what kyu or dan you are, you have to use one of this 2 belts.
