A DeLand Police Department K-9 is being praised after finding a missing 3-year-old boy safe in the woods near his home.

to illustrate; we got home from a holiday. My parents put me on the couch a suitcase and beauty case on the floor, went to get the others bags from the car. Within 30 seconds I hopped off the couch, opened the beauty case. Grabbed the nail polish remover, opened it and took a swig. I must have been 3 years old or so.

@@KrisD007You sound slow. Kids wander off all the time, it doesnt mean the parent was a bad parent. My sisters used to hop out of their cribs at night, unlock the front door and walk tf out, just wandering around. Why? Kids are naturally curious! Its common sense which I see isnt so common. and they were only 4 and 6 years old....smh obviously if the mom was in the wrong, She would have already been detained. Smh 🤦🏿‍♀️🤦🏿‍♀️

From news stories about this : Officer Damon Clarke and Midnight, a three-year-old black lab, found the little boy after a 45-minute search. This is the fifth time Clarke and Midnight have helped find a missing person; their record so far is 5 finds in 5 searches. K-9 Midnight is trained to search for missing people and is also a narcotics dog; he's been with the DeLand PD since 2022.

i like that they included the dog losing the scent and doubling back to find it again, its shows how well trained the officer is in understanding what the dog is telling him.

Dogs can also tell which scent is older. So if the child crossed over his own trail the dog smells the two scents and realizes he is following the older scent and goes back to the newer one.

yeah the boy circled around. ive watched my doggies sniff for each other and if the first one goes in a circle, the sniffing one goes on the same exact path. its both amusing and amazing.

I am so grateful this story has a happy ending. Midnight took right off in the correct direction and within minutes discovered the missing boy. Kudos to the dog and the police officers.

Video was edited....news report said about a "45 minute search"... between that info & the Timestamps which indicated about a 30 minute search in the woods, I'm guessing the PO's might have received the call for help & responded in about 15 minutes....so total time 45 minutes. Pretty darn good policing right there!!!

The dog seemed to know how delicate of a mission this was. No barking or anything overly enthusiastic, to not scare the child. What a relief the kid was found unharmed. Well done to officers and dog

I owned a tracking dog (a bloodhound) about 20 years ago. "Buford" was exceptional at his craft. When trained, they are much smarter than their human handlers. You have to learn to trust them. "The nose knows"!

Generally, "agressive" police dogs are being prompted by their handler to act animated like that. To most K-9's their job is but a fun game to them. They follow commands for a "good boi" and big pets.

Twenty-six years ago, I worked with an LT with Jackson County Sheriff, Jackson Michigan. He had the worlds' biggest German Shepard, "Ax". The dog was trained to track humans and take them down if they resisted. I came into work one morning to hear of a 3-4 year old boy who had wandered into a corn field when mom and dad stopped at a roadside picnic table with about ten friends. They did not notice the child had vanished. The LT arrived on scene and let Ax sniff the blankets that the boy slept with. He turned Ax loose and the dog ran into the HUGE cornfield. When Ax found the child, he simply sat and barked. When the LT called his name, he would bark once. It took something like five minutes for the LT to catch up to the dog. He was sitting next to the child, waiting. I was suprised the LT would relase the dog, given how he had a reputation for taking down bad guys, but Kevin (the LT) said, '"Ax is not stupid, he knows what the task is. He will bite into a bad guy, but he'd lay his life down for a child." Kevin said there were "better" breeds for heavy police work but the German Shepard is known for being the most versatile. I had been afraid of Ax up to that point, I was more relaxed around him after that.

@@askapk it's a dog. we can argue if it's value is higher or lower than then two legged LEO's , but it's a dog. It shouldn't be view as anything but that, a dog. No special laws about harming them, no big funerals paid by tax payers. Or elaborate funerals for human officers paid by the tax payers.

@@WMeier-kd8hz fences aren't infallible. All it takes is someone unlatching a gate without you realizing. Same goes with doors to the house. Someone leaves a door unlatched, or the child is smarter than you think, and they slip outside. People make mistakes and an important lesson was hopefully learned.

@@WMeier-kd8hz - That's good. Back in early 1983, my husband and I were moving and flew from Spain to NY with a 5 yr old and a nursing 5 month old. It was a long trip and I was exhausted. My husband went to check on something and when he came back, I was asleep with the baby our 5 yr old was gone. I was horrified and thought for sure someone had taken her. He looked all over the airport. We finally saw her sitting at the big window, watching the airplanes. I didn't remember that until she reminded me. I never forgot and often remind my grown girls to never take their eyes off their kids.

It was nothing but a planned and staged police K-9 training DRILL. A cop simply carried out his own child, (who wasn't crying at all), to make it appear that an actual child was lost in the parent's OWN BACKYARD! If anyone did a FOIA, (Freedom of Information) request, they would discover that there WAS NO missing child report on that date. It was nothing but another TRAINING DRILL, presented as a real-life event!

I can't stand dogs. However, I'm not cruel to them. Loved them as a kid but as an adult, the longer I went without having a dog, the more they annoyed me when around them. I'm a cat person now. lol. My cat leaves me the fcuk alone for the most part. 😂 He's a great cat too. So laid back and mellow.

I know what you mean. But, there are very few bad ones. Unfortunately the bad ones get the press because blood sells so to speak. I am a retired LEO and I can tell you that in the LEO world children are at the forefront of everybody’s mind. All stops are pulled when children are involved. I have seen the meanest, baddest, combat veteran officers in tears when it comes to children.

Still questions? K9s are extremely important to society and us police officers for many reasons. They are rescuers, companions when the worst comes to the worst, friends, colleagues, family members, friends of children and much more. And that's exactly how we should treat them, with deep respect.

This happened to my cousin when he was 2. He was found soaking wet, 2 miles away, a few hours later, with his best friend- a beautiful black lab- still by his side. The way he was soaked left no doubt that he had fallen into nearby swamps, which was our biggest fear, as he couldn’t swim at the time. It’s believed the dog helped him stay afloat and eventually find help, as the rescuers spotted the pup first. There’s no doubt a lot of these stories would be very different without brilliant dogs like these.

My 3.5-year old nephew wandered into the woods for 1.5 hours. We search frantically. Our dog brought him home. He said he wasn't alone bc Buck was with him. ♡♡

This happened to my daughter with my grandson, he was rolled up in his covers sleeping and flattened out on the bed. You couldn't tell he was in there and she had fallen asleep and thought he walked out of the house and freaked out. I'm glad this little boy was found and safe.

A purse snatcher grabbed my bag in a Walmart parking lot. The police came with a K 9 dog and found him in about five minutes In the woods behind the store. Amazing.

That was AMAZING. There are no words to express the gratitude we all feel towards that dog. As he closed in towards the boy, he was like "okay, my job is done." These dogs are irreplaceable.

Oh man I'm crying just as bad as the child and mother. So many times these searches end in a recovery instead of a rescue. Thank God it ended this way and I'm sure the cops are crying and grateful. Great K-9 unit (dog)

Police K-9s are worth their weight in gold! But without the training both the handler and the dog receive, it would not be possible for success. Both my husband and son were K-9 officers, so I know how much work goes into the successful partnership.

It would have likely taken 50 humans about an hour to find the little guy. Cost of training a typical K9 animal.. about $20k to $30k Recovering a missing kid in 30 minutes... PRICELESS !

Thanx for noticing that....many police I know have come home from work with scratches, bruises, mosquito & other bug bites, ticks, & even poison ivy rashes from searching for both suspects & "lost" ppl. Going through ankle deep to chest deep swampy water is the worst. One officer I know ended up admitted to hospital for treatment of poison ivy that had swollen the officer up pretty severely. Rarely do the public hear about it. Now, with body cam's...PO's are getting noticed for these things & rightly so.

@@Cartsp70 They gave the dog something of the child. It could be his blanket or clothing and they pick up the child's scent. then they proceed into the woods. It's amazing!

A few months back my husband needed surgery and I was in the hospital waiting room, feeling anxious. As I was sitting there, a man came in with his emotional support dog. A few minutes later, I felt a furry head on my knee, and it was the dog. He sensed that I needed some emotional support as well and came over to comfort me. His owner told me that he often did that, comforted random strangers. I'm just so amazed that he sensed that I needed support and gave it to me. My eyes fill up every time I think about it 🥺
