What made this sitcom so unique was its ability to combine character development within its slapstick comedy. They didn't simply move on to the next show - previous shows had an effect on how the character's would interact with one another going forward. I think my favorite relationship was between Jennifer and Herb. A subtle respect for each other grew between them as the series progressed. The camaraderie amongst all of them just built over time. And unlike the similarly ensemble M.A.S.H. (another great show) it maintained its comedic edge when it dealt with serious issues. It was such a special show.

Les was one of my favourite TV characters - I loved his little quirks - especially the random bandages in each episode. They could probably write a whole series based on how he received each of these injuries.

WKRP did not do a Lennon episode, but they did do one that covered the disatrous concert in Cincinnati at Riverfront Coliseum where 12 fans waiting to grab seats for The Who concert were crushed when one set of doors was opened prematurely. This episode was helpful in persuading concert venues to eliminate festival seating. Also, Gordon Sims (aka Venus Flytrap) was not just a smooth talking DJ, but also a schoolteacher and a Vietnam vet. One episode deals with his resolving his desertion case with the US Army--he had just come back from Vietnam, and would have been transferred stateside soon after his return, but a bad case of PTSD caused him to leave before his dismissal papers could be processed.

That turkey episode does go down as one of the best of all time but what I remember most about Less was his obsession with having an office (the outline on the floor) and his prophetic warning about the Chinese, not the Soviets, being the real threat we had to look out for. It got a laugh back in the late 70s, not so much anymore. Les Nessman, a true pioneer in the field of radio news journalism. We salute you sir!

An excellent show, one of the best ever that I can watch over and over. Any version without the original music is just...no good.

A lot of people comment like this so I must ask each time: If you can't stand the show without the music, is it the show that's the best ever......or was it just the music? Sounds like a show that isn't all that watchable without Steely Dan or something going on in the background. Not sure I follow this line of thinking?
@TabaquiJackal906

@@tracyisbest No. The show was deliberately written to include certain music, the dialogue, action, beats, etc. all matching up to music that was being played by Johnny or Venus. When it's instead filled in with some schlocky, canned, 'studio' music, some of the scenes really lose that particular edge, focus, irony, or statement. WKRP in it's original form was delightful - chopped up and edited to conform to ridiculous copyright junk just hobbles it.

Travis: Mrs. Carlson, just why do you want to replace Les Nessman as news director? Mrs. Carlson: Because he's incompetent, unprofessional, and weird! It was in the final season that she said what everyone always knew.

This probably won’t help much but you can still find the VHS box set online that includes all of series’ the episodes. This would only be helpful if you have an old VCR laying around. I have a large collection of VHS Disney movies I kept for my littlest ones (my kids’ ages range from 12 months to 22 years) so I hung on to a VCR.

I just wanna know is the opening song about Andy or Johnny AND what is the guys singing about in the closing song?
@Obiter3
@Obiter3 3 жыл бұрын
The closing song is just what it sounds like - jibberish. The guy didn't have the lyrics when he pitched the song but they liked it just the way it was, knowing a CBS announcer would be talking over the credits anyway. I spent years as a kid wondering what the hell he was saying.
@ronaldh8446
@ronaldh8446 2 жыл бұрын
The opening song is from Travis' perspective. There is an episode in the series where Mama Carlson asks Andy why he stays at WKRP and he responds saying he got tired of packing and unpacking, going town to town up and down the dial.
