Excellent review. I never noticed the cogging issue but then again I haven't ran it on grass. I enjoy mine quite a bit but I have noticed the drive shafts bend real easy. You guys really beat it up at the skate park and for a toy it seemed to hold up well. I just got a metal upgrade kit for mine so I'm going to take mine out tomorrow and bash it and then bring it home and completely rebuild it. It's a good looking buggy and with some paddle tires it would be fun to take it out in some sand dunes. Thanks for showing us what the car can do and letting us know about the cogging issue.

I have a 124018, and I love it. Changed out most of the electrics but the brushed motor. I've considered making it brushless, but its so good as is. After watching this I think I'll leave it be.

Mine has zero cogging issues (maybe it's a V2 & your test model is V1?). $172 shipped from AliExpress with one 2200 & 2x3600mAh batt's. Finally cracked front shock absorber mount & bumper crashing under a gate... Metal replacements were under $15 for both entire assemblies Cheaper price & maintenence, WAY more durable, and WAY faster than traxxas slash

Thanks guys for the honest review! Very nice! I was curious since it was released, but you have convinced me not to buy. I've upgraded my 124018 to brushless a while ago and it has the same cogging issues in things such as high grass. It is not the gearing though that would solve it. The issue is that the motor is not sensored. What you are showing with the 124016 cogging on flat surface is the motor trying to find the right angle inside. It will do so eventually on flat surface as the car can move a bit: pointless on more rugged surface... It is also why most crawler-type / heavier terrain type RC cars are brushed. Only the very expensive ones can afford a sensored set-up to solve cogging. I cannot. A sensored WL-variant of this car would not be the cheap category anymore. Such a shame as it is such a nice platform, form-wise. Keep up the channel! I like!

the drive shaft is fractionally too long in these. i had the same issue. removed pinions from main drive shaft and shaved about 1mm from each end. replaced and it fixed it. the cogging is between diff and pinions being pushed too far.

I have the brushed! I have enjoyed it, lasted longer than any of my ECX RCs by far. Someday I’ll waste money on higher grade, for now, these are quite nice.

I think what most people call "cogging" is the problem of the ESC unable to develop torque at low speed, which is difficult on sensorless motors, as it does not know the position of the rotor to synchronize the output voltages/ currents with that. Perhaps a better ESC could solve this? Something like the Hobbywing 16BL30? But low speed torque on sensorless motors is often an issue, so lower gearing would definitely help as well.

This guy put a bigger motor into the stock vehicle, keeping the stock gearing and stock ESC, and the cogging is gone. That would suggest it is more of an underpowered / to high gearing issue, rather than an ESC/control issue: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ps1_dMSV1MzMo40.html

Its more a design question. This motor is a cheap 4 pole brushless motor. In hardware, the most effective way to reduce cogging torque is skewing the rotor magnets or stator slots. This design reduces cogging torque ripple but complicates the production process and increases the final price of the product. The brushed motor works much better on the model and you should not go for the brushless version if you do not want to tinker with it.

@@GhostActual206 Sorry I should have worded it more correctly. I would recommend this to someone that would simply like to own an RC car, that's not going to cost a fortune. Someone that can use this cheap car to learn how to, one day look after a decently priced one. It's a small cheap hobby grade car, and you can learn so much from it. Also people shouldn't expect any car to last after such extreme bashing. What would you recommend people, thats around this price range? not necessarily people looking to get into the hobby to race professionally, I am talking about your average person that wants to own one to have fun with.

@Founding Fathers It has replaceable, upgradeable parts. It may be cheap, but It is hobby grade, as its the very definition of hobby grade. I mean its not toy grade.

Definitely keeping it real! My 124017 arrives next week and I ordered a programmer too but that seems pointless. I bought it as a stop gap until a brushless 104001 appeared but given all the reviews now coming out, I’m having a major rethink. Have to hope the cogging isn’t too bad as I don’t want to have to replace all the electronics and buy adjustable motor mounts etc just to make it work. On a side note, I’ve noticed from recent videos that Amber’s driving is much better than Joes. Maybe Amber should do the driving reviews leaving Joe to do the wrecking and flying planes?? 😉

Yes, it seems changing is setting made no real apparent difference, especially off-road! I hope your 124017 isn't too bad, ours was certainly better than the 124016. 🍻

Great video! Damn it's a shame that it cogs a lot, if it didn't cog it would have been amazing in my opinion. It's surprisingly quite durable, but joe says otherwise *cough* *cough* 10:51 You guys are getting pretty dam good at driving on the track I'd love to see another race day, :)

I noticed 1 thing between this car and the brushed version. The brushed version has a 540 sized motor but this one has a 380 and both cars have the same gearing. If you look at the motor mount on this car there is actually 2 motor diameters on the mount. 1 for 380 sized motors and 1 for 540 sized motors I assume. That means you could just swap in a 540 sixed motor and eliminate the cogging issue due to the increased torque.

This Thing is way way over geared since they use the ridiculous HUGE 27t pinion from the brushed version. Stick a 17t pinion from an a959 in with a modded motor mount and no cogging, no overheating and wheelies all day on 2s..

Love you guys mainily amber but you too joe lol i actually been looking at this one i really like how it looks im not much a basher asxi am a cancer survivor twice over but I was left with a brain tumor and a seizure disorder and unable to work so I now live on a very small fixed income and cant afford to spend much a month. I have one and I agree super fun super fast but the cogging and the thrashed spur gear after 3 runs is no fun. Get it but be prepared to repair asap

I changed the esc on my zd racing dtk 16 to a higher amp one and it's cogging so bad I have to push it to get it going it ran fine on the stock one but it burnt out

Solved bad cogging before by re-soldering the ESC leads an bullets. Sometimes it can be down to to much flux and you know these things are slapped together in a hurry.

I have 4 different. Wltoys cars. I think the best most durable is my 12429. It rips in snow and has stayed together best.

Could be the ESC, motor, gearing or all of the above! Cheapest fix would be to fit a smaller pinion then modify the motor mount would need a dremal I think. Cheers

Another RC channel showed the programming card, they ended up going for soft setting to improve the cogging issue.

So the cogging issue is a major drag and ppl will probably won't buy this thing because of it and rightfully sos but lets say for a minute they would somehow sort the cogging issue by switching to a lower kv motor and a higher quality esc. This thing is a cheap BEAST. you practically tried to break it in the skate park and all the damage is the central drive shaft? I mean that's a few dollars fix. no issue. That thing performed like a notorious or outcast at 1/3 the price. sure the cogging issue needs to be solved but Im sure it is solvable, maybe esc, maybe lower kv motor, maybe gearing. something needs to change but it is solvable right? thing is a beast I hope they fix it fast.

The cogging definitely comes from the esc. I'm sure if you put a different 60amp esc inside it would get rid of the cogging just a shame wltoys haven't changed it.

I think it’s geared too high hence the newer faster speeds from WLTOYS try gearing down for some torque, don’t they include different spur gears ⚙️? Or simply a crappy motor choice on WLTOYS part. Great video guys

Great video! Sadly mine was already on route to me so was too late to cancel. The cogging is awful and I am already having a bit of a battle with Banggood who say the car is moving 'so what is wrong with it'.

The cogging is from the cheap esc and motor, A censored setup completely gets rid of cogging.

First time I hit a low curb (thinking it would jump it) it stop dead in its tracks and bent the chassis and center drive shaft. So disappointed 😞

A few people have said it cogs because it's over geared but if you gear it down it's gonna be just as fast as the brushed version?? I think it's just the cheapest combo they could find and its rubbish! And for the extra money aswel? None of these brushless versions are worth it I don't think

It might be better if they put the effort into making a good two wheel drive car rather than a not so good four wheel dive one. I've found 4WD is not essential with the faster trucks and two wheel drive give a simpler car with a better power to weight ratio.

You're right though, I didn't factor in the included batteries so my original comment on the prior video was inaccurate. Cheap to me means the $100-$200 CAD range though, so it's a bit of word association. Maybe it varies between locales? Awesome video though! It's cogging because they over geared it for speed! What KV motor is in it? The easy fix would be to just go down a couple of teeth on the pinion size! The other fix would require a lower KV motor! Both fixes would lower the top speed but would make more of a ground ripper more responsive! Which in opinion is way more fun! Also wondering if you where able to do full throttle on the track at all?

I agree. Its a 3400kv motor. I've considered making my 124018 brushless, but was thinking more 2600-2800 since the gearing is fixed due to the motor mount. You could always slot it with a Dremel too...

Hi Jay, gearing and KV rating has little to do with cogging. It's more to do with unoptimized, sensorless 2 pole brushless motors.

Version 1 correct? Change the motor gear to 19 tooth and a 4200kv motor. All cogging problems will be solved with this solution

Huh, I'm curious why you're so much more negative about this one than the 124017. I just ordered that thinking the cogging wasn't quite as bad as it seems now in this one. I assume with the same guts it's just as bad on both? Is it that this one looks more like an off-road vehicle that makes it a bigger offense?

Based on our expierence the 124016 was far worse when it came to cogging. You can see the differences in the 2 videos. The fact the 124017 is a little lighter helps 🍻

It cogs because it is a cheap speed controle and only two windings on the motor. 4 pole would be a better choice.

DEEEEEEERRRP they are all the literal exact same car under the body, the 124016/17/18/19 all have the same chassis and drivetrain. They have the same gears (I'm looking for the original brushed motor that came in my 124018 to do a tooth count but the part numbers appear to be the same) which is ridiculous - anyone that's ever worked with gearing electric motors AT ALL would've spotted the cogging issues before a single part was ever assembeled just by looking at the specs of the motor(s). The ONLY THING that might make the 4016 any different than the others is the plastic cage and body with that extra wheel on the back. Adding probably 3x or 4x the weight of the buggy body would make the cogging more significant but like...I mean...it's nothing a $10 gear set won't fix.

Can't be an honest review! Everytime it comes to wltoys you're "disappointed"?! But why so many love them? Take it by the price and for this it is awesome!!!

No faster than the brushed version. Requires an upgraded ESC to get the 75km from a 2s. So it's not really a rtr.

@@TheflyingkiwiRC You get what you pay for! You didn't have to upgrade. But take a budget combo and you are under 160$. But you can and want to afford 1300$ for a RC? Do it, but don't judge by money

@@tonil6604 it's proven to have an issue. It's brushless but no faster then the brushed version . Nothing to do with money.

@@TheflyingkiwiRC thanks for replying. The motor specs are so different, there can't do more than the brushed! But I personally think for the money it's awesome. 3 things to do, before first drive and it's good! All screws tighten up, grease in the diffs and looking on the shocks for oil. So the diffs wouldn't make the noise you showed in the video!😉 Greetings from Germany
