That war wasn't meant to be won or lost, it was only meant to last as long as possible, the rules of engagement clearly show that, wars are only profitable if they last.

1:34 " ... success-induced optimism. The agency was on a roll in the early fifties. ... We had our own successes in Iran in '53; Guatemala in '54." If you call overthrowing a democracy a "success," then yeah, that's what it was. In both of these cases the result was the installation of a brutal dictatorship & decades of mass suffering. In the case of Iran, 26 years of the Shah & his CIA-trained secret police SAVAK torturing & murdering Iranian citizens led to 1979's Iranian Revolution.

The very sad part of the whole story is that USA had no interest at that time for a coup in Iran. It was UK who desperately needed it. UK attempted and failed and finally it convinced uncle Sam to do it by using itsr third column inside the US administration such as the evil Dulles brothers. Also Vietnam is a war totally invented by Dulles in the 50s when they refused to accept the peace treaty between France and Vietnam

But at their cocktail parties they all toasted themselves . They had assetts of mafia types and dictators and secret police hit squads. They set up a system and gamed their own system. Then stamped a label on it and sold it . They got the profit and we got to pay for it.

Vietnam is important in trade routes. The french exploited that and the Truman doctrine brought the USA. My wife is Vietnamese. These people have been overrun for centuries. With that said, they are a strong and resilient people and due to the geography and history, they are fierce and independent. It is sad when any country is invaded, but history is not as simple as the cynical simple statements here make it sound.

America had the opportunity to team with Ho Chi Minh. But did not want to upset the French by supporting Ho Chi Minh. Ho Chi Minh was working with the OSS during WW2 to fight the Japaneae. After WW2, Ho Chi Minh asked America to support VN independent and that VN will adopt the US constitution and the Bill of Right. This mistake cost the US 58K lives, thousand with injuries and 500 billion dollars. Shame.

whewre did you get this silly shit? Prove what you said is trut.By the way,Uncle Ho was just an Army Officer and NOT the political maker and shaker. Here is real Na,m History. By 1973/74 the North had almost no Air DFefense ability, Hanoi was being destroyed. Political Pressure from both D emocrats and Liberal Republicans(Percy and Ford) plus Nixons mess led to U.S. dumping the war. The Paris Peace Accord was violated by the North, and THE U>S> did NOT respond with total Air and Sea Bombardment to the violation as was stated in the Accord. This is how it ended. If Nixon had still been President, he would have ordered the total destruction of Hanoi.Do you really believe that Nixon had Rosemary Woods make them recordings?

@@davidwadsworth8982 Hô was no military man, you are wrong and he is right, Hô wrote to the State Department 7 times to ask for help dealing with the French, he knew how the US fought for her independence, he thought they would understand what his country was going through and that they would be glad to help, unfortunately he didn't realize that the US would use the temporary division of the country to install a puppet government in the south, pretend they needed help to fight imaginary communists in the north, Hô wanted his country to be free, he didn't want no capitalist and no communist in Vietnam. Only after he died in 1970 the north became much more radical and violent, he would not have agreed with that. When they left, the French handed the heroin trade to the US the CIA created Air America and they flooded the world with their crap just to finance their insane operations. A lot of people all over the world suffered a lot because of Dulles and his spooks, the US will have huge excuses to make when it wakes up from its fantasies of manifest destiny bullshit.

NVA had pipelines funneling fuel down the trail in Laos. It was actually more of a highway hidden under triple canopy jungle. Complete with power lines, telephone lines and security personnel known as bihn tramms. There sole job was to secure the trail and to hunt SOG teams. The bounty for a American SOG member was so high it would have made you a rich man if you were in the NVA or Pathet Lao.

Excellent point to bring up whenever any "useful idiot" posts that cumulative alleged US bomb strike map of Laos. It's worth mentioning, however, that it had to disperse into a more capillary network in Cambodia. Also there, NVA security would be as much to keep Khmer Rouge from stealing equipment as anything else. Thus, why initial KR support zone was predicted by bombing: knocked-out convoys made for easy pickings.

Laos was successful? "positive accomplishments of the agency"??? "good trade craft"??? "Air America was indispensable to CIA operations in Laos" Air America is proven as a transportation vehicle for the heroin trade from the late 1960s thru the mid 1970s in SE Asia and then in Central America in the 1980s. Laos was bombed incessantly by the US in 1960s and 1970s. The US was instrumental in bombing Laos and Cambodia causing so much destruction and chaos that the Khmer Rogue were able to come to power. The Hmong the US worked with, werre, and continue to be, deeply involved in the Golden Triangle drug trade.

The claim that the CIA was not involved with or associated with the coups in RVN is specious. Each coup plotter sought the pre-approval of the US before acting, just like Huerta got permission to topple Madero from the US ambassador in Mexico back in 1913. The CIA took these tasks under the table, it became too embarrassing for ambassador's to be doing this openly after WW2 - hence the NSA act of 1947.

Where does anyone get the notion that democracy for the sake of democracy has Ever been the goal??? It wasn't in the founding of the US, nor has it ever been since. Were it so, there would never have been the debates regarding a federal versus national government dating from the Federalist-Antifederalist debates to the present - illustrated clearly by the 2002 Presidential election. The imagined dilemma, angst and pathos so poignantly expressed by a few here based upon erroneous assumption, is oh so dramatic, but founded on a delusional rotten foundation.

As a general rule i think its good to be skeptical. These days, high alert skepticism, as far as that goes, I appreciate yours. The only thing I know about in this lecture is his remarks around 1:20 “CIA success in Iran.” This success cane from CIAs ability to have a democratically elected president overthrown. By doing so, it directly led to the Iran they have complained about to this day. Currently that complaint is tied to the Iran govt, to stop it, they try to say they are behind terror but Iran offered to help fight terror and ended up fighting ISIS with Russia. Anyway, if the US is able to trigger a war or revolution that eliminates the power structure in Iran, what sort of govt would they want? They would want a democratically elected president.

Civil Air transport (CAT) had a lot of C-46's parked at kai Tak airport in Hong Kong in 1949, it looked like they were stranded there. They eventually disappeared, it was well known they were the air transport part of the Flying Tigers.. HK was a real hot bed of intrigue between east and west in those days. There wasn't much stopping the commies from marching in other than it suited them to have a some place where they could have contact with the outside world. These C-46's could have wound up in some CIA operation, they just gradually vanished one after another over some time, some could have wound up in l'indochine..

If the agency had nothing to do with the overthrow what were Lucien Conein and Col. Lansdale, fresh from the Philippines, doing there then? If Diem had been a little more Buddhist friendly rather than a totally stubborn American Christian, he might have had a chance to get the people on his side but when monks began to immolate themselves on TV, he was done. If the 56 election had taken place as had been promised, there would have been no U$ involvement, no communism and no kids still born horribly handicapped today because of the insane amount of agent orange dropped on the jungle, killing all life for miles around. And the US never even apologized, unforgivable. And then Laos and Cambodia...
