Vietnam is important in trade routes. The french exploited that and the Truman doctrine brought the USA. My wife is Vietnamese. These people have been overrun for centuries. With that said, they are a strong and resilient people and due to the geography and history, they are fierce and independent. Each coup plotter sought the pre-approval of the US before acting, just like Huerta got permission to topple Madero from the US ambassador in Mexico back in 1913. The CIA took these tasks under the table, it became too embarrassing for ambassador's to be doing this openly after WW2 - hence the NSA act of 1947.
