In this Screen Tests interview, actress Mia Wasikowska discusses her nomadic childhood, her intense ballet training as a girl and how her film career took off thanks to Google search.
Mia Wasikowska, with her almost spectral elegance and innate grace, is somehow the love child of Cate Blanchett and Tilda Swinton. This otherworldly quality made her the perfect actress to portray out-of-time heroines like Alice (in Wonderland) and, most recently, the title character in the new Jane Eyre. Though 21, the Australian actress is convincing as a modern teen in The Kids Are All Right and the upcoming Restless, directed by Gus Van Sant. She often has a faraway, slightly unknowable look in her eye: Wasikowska and her characters seem to have secrets, which fuel the mystery of both.
What was the first movie that made a big impression on you?
I think it was Bambi. I remember being traumatized by the experience-I was so upset when the mum died in the movie. There were a few films that got me interested in acting and cinema. I’m Polish, but I grew up in Australia. My mom used to have a lot of European cinema playing in the house, so I’d catch bits and pieces of films. I really, really loved Krzysztof Kieslowski’s films, especially Blue and Red.
Do you speak Polish?
A little bit but not very well. When I was eight years old, we lived in Poland for a year. I was just there about three weeks ago-it definitely seems very familiar. I am at home there, but I feel like I could live anywhere now.
Perhaps that’s because you’ve been on movie sets all over the world from the time you were a teenager. Did you get your start in school plays?
I did a few amateur theater productions when I was young, but I was really shy. I didn’t like drama classes, so it has always surprised me that I ended up in films. I’d always done dance. I was eight when I started ballet. I was really serious-I danced about 35 hours a week. I finished with dance when I was about 15.
All of a sudden?
Well, I started not enjoying ballet, because it was so much about physical perfection. What I like about film is it explores imperfections. That was something that really attracted me.
When I decided to pursue acting at 15, I heard that you had to have an agent to do film and television, so I did a Google search for acting agencies in Sydney. I hounded one to take me on and started auditioning. I did some films in Australia, and then I started working in America on [HBO’s] In Treatment when I was 17.
You played Sophie, a 16-year-old Olympics-bound gymnast who was in a state of emotional anguish.
Although I’m not particularly troubled myself, I do have a lot of empathy for troubled characters. When it came to the last episode of In Treatment, I was a mess. That character was like my friend-I was in another country, away from my family-and then she was gone.
You’ve embodied two very famous characters: Alice, in Alice in Wonderland, and now Jane Eyre. Was it difficult to play such icons?
Alice is beloved, so that was a responsibility. I did about five auditions for Alice before I got the role.
Did you have to wear a corset as Alice?
Yes-for two scenes, and it was very painful. But now, having done Jane Eyre, I realize the Alice corsets were sissy corsets. The corsets I wore in Jane Eyre were incredibly painful. Ballet hurts, but it’s more like your feet are killing you. With a corset on, you can’t breathe properly.
But does wearing the proper costume help you get in character?
Absolutely. It’s the last piece of the puzzle. Once you get in the costume, it’s like, Okay, this is who this person is. With Jane Eyre the corset helped me understand the repression and pain of the character.
You have a natural sweetness-do you think anyone would ever cast you as anything but a heroine?
I would love to play a villain. I’ll have to learn to seem more diabolical.

She does have that ability to morph into different people without even trying. I read somewhere that she looks 12 and 40 at the same time, and it's not far from reality. What's scary about it is that she makes it look so effortless without having had any formal training.

***** There IS something about her talent that's uncanny - no doubt, Mia is special. Is it a spark of the divine or a toss of the genetic dice? It depends on how you see things, but it does cause many to wonder. The source of talent is not easily understood.

I've read Jane Eyre, one of my favorite books, and I've seen numerous film and tv versions, for me Mia's Jane Eyre is the best reflection of the way the character is portrayed in the book. She doesn't play it too over-the-top, she is strong, intelligent, yet vulnerable - somehow she seems both more realistic and more poetic. I loved the film - she and Fassbender were great together.

Mia Wasikowska is the David Blaine of acting. She is like a magician. She literally transforms into her characters and transforms out like some contortionist mutant from the X-men. I think she just might be an alien. I have never seen an actress this good. Her India in Stoker was so amazing.

"The David Blaine of acting", that's pretty funny. Once you've seen a few of Mia's performances you start making comparisons and you can see just how wide and varied a range she has - I don't know if she's an alien, but she's one tremendously talented human.

Todd Boothbee It's too bad Kieslowski is no longer with us - not only to share his genius and insight, but to feature Mia Wasikowska in one of his films. What a match they would have made.
@toddboothbee1361
@toddboothbee1361 9 жыл бұрын
I agree. It would have been wonderful to see Mia become another Irene Jacob for Kieslowski. Kieslowski has made, for me, a complete movie world that I love--though I do tend to include his moving Decalogue in that world. For many years now he's been my favorite, the one true artist with the most humanity and courage. I dislike the word 'genius', but in his case it is the right one.
@92ninersboy
@92ninersboy 9 жыл бұрын
Todd Boothbee "Decalogue" was fantastic. Kieslowski made poetic films that I consider timeless - "humanity" is the word. His films were also sensual. Mia is an actress who can express so much with her face, eyes and body movement - she's subtle, and she can tap into an enigmatic quality that would have been a perfect vehicle for Kieslowski. Maybe it's something about the Polish soul.
@toddboothbee1361
@toddboothbee1361 9 жыл бұрын
"Subtle" is right, as in understated. Kieslowski chose his actors carefully--they all have such beautiful, intelligent faces full of feeling. Mia is endlessly fascinating. I recently saw her for the first time in Alice in Wonderland--the movie was dreadful, but she, even in that dreck,suggested great presence. (The arrangement of her body, face, and movements as you mentioned, suggest great depth of possibilities..) She's beautiful, but truly so, not in any way resembling the tepid sexuality usually found in show business.She allows the viewer to fall in love with her, and that is, perhaps, the power of a great actor. She is herself like a great film, evoking in some viewers a memory, almost, of what we might or should become, what life is capable of. That is the sensation I get, anyway.
@92ninersboy
@92ninersboy 9 жыл бұрын
Todd Boothbee Very well put - you've picked up a lot about what she does on screen - and just from "Alice", that's pretty impressive. You'll see so much more once you start checking out her other performances, too, like a brilliant version of "Jane Eyre", or Park chan-Wook's "Stoker". Or go on Netflix and watch her performances as Sophie in the first season of HBO's "In Treatment". It's impressive how much you see, even with just scratching the surface of her performances.

Yes, I loved her in both of those! Some people say she was monotone and boring as Jane, but I think (though it was the first Jane Eyre I've seen, and I haven't read the book) she's portrayed the character perfectly. Everything seemed to work perfectly with the character :) And in Stoker I think she did the same thing. I think that's exactly how her character was supposed to be, and she did a really great job :)

I first saw Wasikowska in IN TREATMENT and within a series I really liked she riveted me above all the exceptional rest. JANE EYRE was beautiful. I couldn't believe another adaptation could be justified and yet it most certainly was. I was completely moved by it. To my sensibility, the two ALICE films were shameless, thoughtless trash-fests, which failed to deliver on the kind of support which Wasikowska's intelligent Alice so clearly deserved.

@@92ninersboy No, I haven't. But with Tim Roth also in the cast it's a clear must-see. One wonders what Ingmar Bergman might have done with a Wasikowska . . . she really has. it's almost much more of a pleasure to just listen to her, while not watching to the screen. still think that a great voice is very underrated in many arts. especially in acting or even rap. listen to people like clooney, pitt or emma stone and jennifer lawrence. strong and very distinct voices. for the more elegant and softer voices, mia here or jessica chastain. great voices.

She has so much natural class, and has many others said, she's going to be the next Cate Blanchet or any other big actress! Anyways, she's on a good start!

Yeah, it was kind of weird. I don't know a ton about Jane Eyre, and like I said, I haven't read the book or seen any other portrayal, but somehow I feel like she played the part how she was supposed to be played. Or at least, I feel like if I read the book, this is how I would have imagined her. And, yes, she and Michael Fassbender were great and such an odd couple. Which is one of the things that drew me to this movie :)

Sheseems really nice. i've only seen her in Alice in wonderland & the kids are alright and I liked her in those. I have to check her out in In Treatment because I hear she's really good in it, plus i started watching it last year and really liked it.She kinda reminds me of a young Claire Danes here.
