I looked it up, and it’s a tradition that NOPD chiefs started exclusively to symbolize the weight they carry and the responsibility they hold of being a police chief, and a leader. They also do it to identify to the public that they are the police chief. It was started back in the 1800’s

Chris Madison I looked it up. It’s only their department. If a LEO passes in the line of duty, only officers in THAT department are allowed to wear the black for a maximum of 30 days after that date.
