Scania is the most southern tip of Sweden, 40km of beach stretch to the Baltic and is known as the "eel coast". From the end of August until the start of November it is peak season for the remaining local eel fishermen like Hånsa Olofsson. Together with his family he hosts eel parties, at which an array of eel dishes are served - whether smoked, fried and cooked all are delicious.
What's cookin' is about traditional culinary recipes from different European regions.

I was born at the wrong time and in the wrong country. I look at where my family heritage came from and when I visit those European countries I wish I would have grown up in them instead. Especially the scandinavian side of my family. Nothing is passed down in the generations nowadays, nor do the younger generation care to learn about the traditions of their grandparents and great grandparents. These people have a great way of life and take pride in what they do. This is awesome to watch. Thank you.

My Russian neighbor's Dedushka spent his autumn days fishing for eel and then smoking them in a backyard smoker he built. When I helped him, he would always give me a whole eel and, since my siblings thought it looked 'creepy', I got to eat most of it myself. I say most, because my Swedish Mom liked eel too! Now, over 60 years later, I still miss my smoked eel, it's hard to find in this area. Too 'ethnic' for most palates these days, I guess...

As a swede, id guess that a more accurate spelling of "Sailor eel" would be "Skepparål", as a "Skeppare" is a term for a commander on a smaller ship. Still has the "Sch" sound, since thats what we usually turn s and k into when they are next to each other. But the pronounciation would something like be "SchÉppar-Åhl." with a bit of an emphasis on the short e and the å. Lovely video, extremely cozy to see and the comments are very wholesome! 🤗 much love from Sweden!

Maori culture in New Zealand eat alot off Eel. I've worked with groups that study the life off Eels in New Zealand, and when they go out to sea to sporn the mothers die, they Travel all the way to the Tonga trents in the middle of the Pacific and come back to New Zealand in a cluster ball as glass Eels (elvers) and only turn grey when they hit the fresh waters when they come back up the rivers to turn into adult Eels. Some can be old as 50 to 90 years old before heading back out to sea again to lay there millions off baby's and die. True story 😊

The smaller eels could have been returned to the sea via a deep bucket without bottom, to prevent them them from being eaten by the seagulls. The fishermen could have hung this deep bucket on the exterior of the boat, and let the smaller eels to go into the sea peacefully. Currently the smaller eels never got the chance to grow. When thrown by these fishermen, they'd floated on the top of the water & immediately taken by the seagulls.

These very deep buckets can have the bottoms already in the sea, so no eels and smaller fish need make a splash, which may stun them.

Sad that this tradition soon will be gone. The swedes handle their part of the sustainability policy well, but sadly many of the new eels never makes it from their spawning grounds in the Saragossa Sea to Sweden because of the southern european commercial fishermens overfishing of baby eels.

Correction, all the eels in the northern hemisphere are born in the Saragossa sea. Those in the southern are all born near Indonesia

I don't think any of the smaller fish and eels they threw back into the water actually made it into the water and lived. It looks like they were all intercepted by the seagulls and eaten alive. I love Sweden. A lot of Swedish women are very beautiful.

Weird thing is the EU prohibits fishing of mature eel in Svamka while allowing fishing of glass eel (tiny see through baby eels) in on the French and Spanish coast by large trawlers. It is quite strange knowing that the regulations actually speed the extinction process up of the eel...

It is a local dessert of the southern parts of Sweden, chiefly in the province of Scania (Skåne) but also in Halland. It is an important part of the Scanian culinary heritage. The name means "cake on a spit" you could call it a Swedish version of a spit cake.

The Japanese fishermen also believe that women bring bad luck to fishing . Even little girls are not allowed to get into their father's fishing boats . If a girl is found playing in a fishing boat , she is punished and the boat washed out with saké which is a Japanese style beer .
