Gergiev has a genius ability to bring the full emotional resonance of Tchaikovsky and the Mariinsky Orchestra is superb. These performances so far exceed the usual interpretations that it's like listening to Tchaikovsky for the first time.

The interpretations of western conductors often go in the direction of circus music, they exaggerate as they think, that the russian soul is the soul of foolish people. Karajan is the worst, he may have a lot of benefits, his Tchaikovsky is not a part of.

@@Piflaser well also Karajan was talking about himself and his interpretation of his story, ( why he always exagerates the fortes and pianos, thinking that it is what will make him interesting..instead of truly listening to his true Voice and the resonance of it ) , not about the human soul, which is about what we are choosing to create and how much we are owning the act of connection to our Source, what we came down onto this earth to see clearly and understand the importance of ; )

Indeed it is, as Tom Service pointed out in his Series "50 Greatest Symphonies." Not only is Tchaikovsky's 6th Symphony included among those 50, but also his First, saying Tchaikovsky's "First Symphony is one of the most important markers in the symphonic story in the 19th century, the piece in which a new type of symphony - absolutely Tchaikovsky's own, and Russia's too - is not just glimpsed, but claimed, staking out the territory his next five symphonies continued to explore. And as well as all that historical significance, it's also one of the most irresistibly attractive first symphonies ever written."

And Shostakovich And Glazunov (which set up the stage for the establishment of a major publishing firm and ushered in a new(er) era in Russian music during the remaining decades of the Russian Silver Age) And Nielsen (the daring, coming of age Nordic modernism of a work that challenged the German School of composition that dominated Scandinavian musical establishment at the time)

There is an almost manic feeling about this performance, with winter dreams taking on the dark shades of nightmare at times, and sudden bursts of energy pouring through a score usually taken more lyrically. Gergiev's interpretation is idiosyncratic, but, at the same time, both wholly Russian, and also in tune with the conflicted complexity of the composer. There is greatness and originality to be found here.

The first time that I heard this Symphony was in 2013; it completely captured me with its overtly evocative imagery and emotional palette, how the master intertwined the two into a coherent and beautiful whole which uplifts the spirit and caresses the senses. Ever since, it has been one of my favorite Tchaikovsky symphonies, together with his 3rd and 6th.

Korrigieren Sie bitte meine Fehler!

Oh! What a fabulous concert. Although the tempo for the 2nd movement is too fast (I've yet to hear it played at Tchaikovsky's marked speed) I can forgive everything for the sheer Russianness of it all. This symphony caused the composer much heartache and, although it has its faults, as Tchaikovksy himself said, 'It is still better and more inventive than many of my later works.' The encore is a joy and there's not a soul on earth who'll be mistaking this for Brahms. What a magical performance. Thank you for sharing it here on KZfaq.

An exemplary performance of this symphony by Russians. It is essential for a good performance of this symphony that the viola, cello, and double bass resonate well. Music really shows the national character. In Germany, France, and Italy, each orchestra has a strong national character. When Russians play Russian music, the performance becomes rooted in their DNA. Other countries cannot imitate it. That's what it means to be from the same country and language as the composer.
