To me, this was a massively important show. Around the same sort of time, Bernie Ecclestone publicly stated that he would refuse to make any effort to get kids interested in F1 because they couldn’t afford any of the brands that sponsored the sport. The fact that McLaren made the effort to create this to get kids engaged in F1 is massive.

The fact that they made a one-off puppet show with Lando and Carlos at McLaren in 2020 just like this is wonderful. Plus the super-supersoft tires being pink/purple is amazing foreshadowing of the ultrasoft and hypersoft tires.

Ooh, now I get it... The box that pops up at 30:30 with 'Do you want to continue?' is supposed to represent the real life Lewis making his mind up if he wants to stay at McLaren and he clicks 'No'. And so at the end he's transformed into Sergio Perez. Pretty imaginatively done in cartoon form :)

These cartoons are actually in the tradition of humour of McLaren founder Bruce McLaren. The McLaren team was founded by New Zealand F1 driver and designer Bruce McLaren in the 1960's. McLaren died testing a car in 1970. Bruce McLaren, through his team and designs, became one of the most influential figures in the history of F1. He also had one of the best senses of humour in F1 history. Bruce I'm sure would enjoy these cartoons because he was a huge Goon Show, Peter Sellers and Monty Python fan and made audio recordings in Goon Show fashion between races with friends on the Formula One circuit (spoof race commentaries etc.) The New Zealand legacy in the McLaren team is indicated by the Kiwi character in the recent "Rush" movie, Alistair Caldwell, McLaren team manager, played by Stephen Mangan. Caldwell in typical Kiwi style was originally the team's cleaner but turned out to be a design genius and manager after Bruce McLaren's death. Caldwell's contributions to Formula One include the six-speed gearbox, air-starter, vehicle skirts and team uniforms. He has a cameo in the movie as a race official. Caldwell is also a very funny man and it's perhaps apt that English comic actor Stephen Mangan plays him in "Rush". A movie about Bruce McLaren is currently in development.
