Starting the day with a face cord plus of large 12-20” rounds of Silver Maple 🍁 to feed Babe the Blue Ox.
This is the Big Dog in Wolfe Ridge MFG’s line up. 25hp v-twin Honda 800cc EFI. Double pump hydraulic system, wait for it in the video to drop into low gear and force the maple through a 3.5” x 3.5” steel wedge. Also, optioned with a 30” stroke for the days where OWB outdoor wood boiler wood will be split, or strictly bonfire wood.
Part two where we finish the pile will drop tomorrow morning. Stay tuned and subscribe for more on the 35 SHO BW!
Have a great day Around the Yard!!!

I can just about guarantee anytime I’m working on firewood from here on out there will be content coming out matching what I am up to around the yard. Hope you can enjoy the rest of the Memorial Day weekend Sir! In Minnesota we haven’t had a rain free, 80+ degree days in over a decade. Our local station was saying the last time(s) in recent memory it was this nice was in 2007 and in 2003.

If that machine was mine, l would add something to the return arm so wood can fall back into the splitting box. I see you putting the block back into the splitting box after each split, easy fix, Big time saver. Can't believe manufacturer didn't fix length of return arm.

@user-xq6jf9yc1x - Wolfe Ridge MFG offers stroke lengths of 24”, 30”, & 36”. This machine has a 30 inch stroke stock - the pull back arm in the video is also 30”. At about the 8:15 mark in the video, I adjust the limiter plates (positive stops at 30”-24”-18”) and set it to the 24 inch stroke. This shortens the cycle time, and in a future video where I unbox the 12-way wicked wedge, I also ordered a 24 inch pull back arm, to work with this limiting stroke. Take a look at the more recent videos where I have consistently been running the 24” stroke & pull back arm, very little manipulation of the rounds, works as you’d expect it to. 😊. Have a great day Around the Yard!

I think a remedy for it would be a slightly longer log lift and then timing out the rounds, so they stop before the pusher can snag them on the return stroke. It scared me when it happened, I would like to add a deflector guard there to protect the hose connections. I didn’t show it but the owners manual compartment is on that side and the weight of the rounds popped the threads, just had to screw the cover back on, no big deal…

Yes, got any ideas? It’s really the one thing I overlooked when I ordered the 30” stroke, I didn’t take into account the pull back arm would also be a fixed dimension. I think the thing to do is 2 more arms that can be bolted to the “front” of the trailer. These would also help add tongue weight. The extra beam length and the heavy construction make this trailer more 50/50 than I would prefer. Also looking into added a steel shelf that could hold additional gas cans or a cooler for the really long days. Thinking it could hang off the sorting table extension when it’s not in use.

I’ll give you a tip box wedge machines don’t like the knotty wood. Leave that stuff for the 4 way that’s why it was shacking so bad to much strain pushing the wood through, because as soon as you ran normal low knot pieces it was fin. That’s why it was shacking man. It’s a simple mistake.

Rick, I adjusted the stroke down to 24”, the pull back arm works much better running the full 30” stroke. The pull back arm I think is 2” square tubing, so I need to use the Lincoln Tombstone and make some adjustment arms to work with the 24” & 18” stops on the strokes.

Eastonmade has a slide on, plate thing that I think adds just a enough to help the round drop into the cradle. If I get a chance to see Back 40’s 37D up close I’ll see if I can’t make something similar.
@amandadavis9726
@amandadavis9726 Жыл бұрын
You have to replace the wood on the cradle because the pull back arm is too high above the box wedge. I noticed it on another channel that had the same issue. If you look at the Eastonmade splitters,…the arm has a plate that sets right above the box wedge. It’s also too long, as well.
@AroundTheYard-MN
@AroundTheYard-MN Жыл бұрын
Amanda Davis - I don’t believe the arm is too high. This 35 SHO is a 30 inch stroke, so the pull back arm is designed to work best with 30” rounds. I adjusted the stroke with the limiter plate to be 24 inches - this doesn’t change the pusher at all, it still pushes the round through and over the box wedge… however the pull back arm doesn’t engage the wood for 6-12 inches and thus does not pull it back on top of the cradle completely. If I ran 30 inch wood, it would run as you would expect, but since the rounds are 16-17” it requires adjusting the rounds each time they come back to the cradle. I wanted the 30 inch stroke because it matches the TM Splitter (skid steer mounted splitter) I also use for the really twisted stuff. Have a great week, stay tuned for more to come on the 35 SHO BW.

Question, have you contacted wolf ridge to see about the loading on the motor? I have considered this same unit and Yours is the 1st ive seen that severly bogs down on the return and even in the split pass there is too much loading even for small pieces listening to the rpms. Seems like.something isnt set right there. Also wasnt sure if things were loose but yours is the only one i have seen that shakes and rattles violently with the splitting pass. Can understand more.when shearing severly knotted rounds but it seems to do that pretty consistently even with clear pieces. Like to hear your thoughts. Thanks in advance.
@AroundTheYard-MN
@AroundTheYard-MN Жыл бұрын
@YellowMetalDriver - Let’s keep the conversation going….I might have 1 hour of runtime on the machine. To your questions, I’ll answer to the best of my knowledge. I have not contacted Wolfe Ridge MFG yet, I may after a few more hours of run time. I want to understand the machine better before I make that call and have more notes on what I am experiencing. Also I am really trying to put everything on video for you and others. When I was shopping for this machine there were/are very few people with a Wolfe Ridge Box Wedge on KZfaq. The violent shaking/ rattling was more concerning the first time it happened. I assumed this was do to the round being forced and sheared through the box wedge, and also the 2nd pump kicking in, I describe this as a hammer drill in slow motion. It’s not going to be quick but its going to go through it. One thing I did notice, and it might be on the next video (part 2 of this video) is if the round is rotated basically bark down on the beam the rattling and shaking happens much less frequently. I attribute this to the bark being able to compress going through the wedge and that creates a small gap in the Y axis… so rather than forcing the wood through a 3.5 x 3.5 opening the wood passing through is 3.5 (x axis across) & 3.25 (y axis vertical). This also seems to speed things up a bit as the shearing process isn’t happening as much. Similarly, if the wedge side of the round is riding on a little excess slash the same thing happens, it just pushes through nice and easy. I have yet to time the cycles, it seems fast, but I think it could be faster on the return. I have heard of others with an issue on the dump valve not opening all the way, but I don’t know if that is the case here or not. The other thing I need to remember is this is the 30” stroke, so what I am used to seeing on other channels is a 24” stroke and that is going to take less time. Though I have the option to also run at 24 & 18 inch strokes with the limiter plates. Keep asking questions, and I’ll answer everything I can, I’d like this to be a resource for all Wolfe Ridge owners. If you have additional questions I’d give WR MFG a call, both Ben and Chris are very knowledgeable on their machines, there is also a FB group Wolfe Ridge MFG Owners that may also be another good resource for you. @Around The Yard appreciate the expanded response. I hope it all works out for ya for sure. I have watched literally every video looking at commercial splitters and that is what I noticed immediatly.on your videos regarding the, what I would consider, excessive vibration and the sound of the loading on the engine not being tuned. Yes I have previously spoken w the folks there and Chris specifically i was not impressed. After the world posting great customer service etc that is not what I received. From asking about local references to unit specific design and spec questions I. He was very condescending to me as a customer after asking questions and pointing out differences & deficiencies compared to a competitor. He seemed to take personal offense to the questions and even having an issue with a customer speaking to 2 people at wolf ridge asking some similar but mostly different questions. I was pretty sworn off his company as a result but they are the only ones local, 2.5hrs one way if you consider that local, that has a distributor that I could drive to and tow away. Appreciate all your info and look forward to future vids.

Hey Doc! I would like to try a 12-way with this 35 SHO, but I think I’ll wait until I’m a bit more used to the operation of the splitter. It is really fast compared to the Northstar, almost scary fast, but the more I use it, the more I will get used to it’s capabilities. The double pump is something else, it might not be as fast, (operator error likely) but I have no doubt it will power through the split, and its pushing 4 pieces through at the same time. Enjoy the holiday weekend!

@Around The Yard , not sure you can get the 12-way wedge for the 35SHO BW machine. Did WR say that is an option?
@AroundTheYard-MN
@AroundTheYard-MN Жыл бұрын
@The Firewood Doctor - Yes it is an option, here’s how it works… The Box Wedge machines come with a pinned single knife that can replace the pinned in place Box Wedge, they also come with a bolt on 4-way wedge standard. A bolt on 6-way and 12-way wedges are also available. These wedges that bolt on are the same wedges that are available with the skid steer splitters, those too are bolt on multi positions (I believe there are 5 preset height settings). ***Note: They are the same style as the hydraulic adjustment wedges but do not have the tube & pin used for the hydraulic adjustment, instead they have a 1/2” Grade 8 bolt and lock nut that secures it to a fixed position on the wedge.*** @Wolfe Ridge MFG

Not sure if that is the root cause for the vibration but almost is acting like the hydraulic system isnt properlty bled and there is air in the system. Just a thought.
@AroundTheYard-MN
@AroundTheYard-MN Жыл бұрын
There might be something too that. Like I said previously, I have about an hour of runtime on the machine. I towed it home 100 miles and shook it all about on the interstate and I’d bet I didn’t level it or run it long enough to work the air back out of the lines… come to think of it the oil cap was burping a little oil, but that also could have been the air release valve. I will check the manual in the morning and see what it says on the hydraulic tank, and or bleeding the system.. Good call @YellowMetalDriver.

But to answer your question this was all Silver Maple 🍁. I try and put additional detail in the description of the video. After you select the video, Under the bold print of the title there is usually three items: 1. How many views the video has had. 2. How many minutes/hours/days/etc. the video has been posted. 3. “More…”. This takes you to the video’s description, took me a while to figure this out, and depending on the divise you are using it may be different on each one. Hope this helps. Hi Brent, on my.looks to be a nice splitter. There always seems to be adjustment that need to made as you progress with anything new. The chatter causing the bad vibrations seemed to be the worst in the first 2 cycles. It seems that colder oil in the cylinder and hoses may be causing the chatter. Once you ran the 3rd pass the chatter backed way down. Maybe run 3-5 passes to get warmer oil into the cylinder. It shows you made the video 2 months ago so you may have figured this out by now. I usually follow your channel but for some reason you stopped popping up . I will be watching and following. By the way were you able to fix your shed roof from the heavy snow last spring. Take care my friend.

Hey Allen, Thanks for finding your way back to the channel. I hadn’t considered the colder temperature of the oil, that’s a good thought…now that it’s been warm the chatter isn’t there anymore. I’ll have to pay attention as we come into fall. As for the sheds…they are both still in ruins, I haven’t had the time to get to fixing them. In all honesty it may become a spring 2024 year down project. I have started giving some thought into how I want to build them back or lack there of. Have a great weekend Around the Yard!

I didn’t add anything, and after almost a year of ownership I am very pleased with my purchase. Given the opportunity I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another Wolfe Ridge MFG product again. Full disclosure, I looked into Eastonmade and was pretty set on a 22-28 before I decided to buy Wolfe Ridge. Here are four of my reasons for not choosing orange and blue. #1 - I purchased the Wolfe Ridge 35 SHO BW end of Dec. 2022 & took delivery in May 2023. - Eastonmade was 14 months out, I would have just now received the 22-28 in Feb. 2024. #2 - I met Chris at the Firewood Frenzy and his team, took a tour of their shop and was genuinely impressed with the evolution of their products. They have come along way in a relatively short amount of time (less than 10 years). They continue to innovate. #3 - They are built in the USA 🇺🇸 with local manufacturing jobs in Eau Claire, Wi. They are about a two hour drive if I ever need anything or they ship next day, and because of proximity it’s here a day or two later. #4 - it’s not the same money. Eastonmade charges $3 per loaded mile and by design they do not have Dealers whereas Wolfe Ridge is expanding their dealer network. Which machine do you own or plan to buy? Have a great day Around the Yard!
