Decades later, this is still the best Figaro on video, and it is likely to be the best most of us will ever see or hear. It made my day, my week, my year, to find this video on youtube. I had seen the very poor quality video on youtube, and I had hoped (without much hope) that somewhere a good copy of this amazing performance would be found. I actually cried with joy when I saw this video. A million thanks Mr. Weikl, for your artistry, and for this memorable gift. Warmest wishes from a fan in the US.

Ich habe diese Vorführung über 40 Jahren zum ersten Mal in Japan im Radio (NHK FM) gehört und habe es später im japanischen Fernsehen angeschaut. Die erneute Wiedergabe im Radio habe ich damals auf Kassette aufgenommen und fast jeden Abend gehört. Für mich ist diese Aufführung das beste Figaro aller Zeiten. Herr Wekl, Ihr Almaviva war super! Und ich liebe Lucia Popps Susanna!! Sie war die Beste! Schade, ich konnte sie nie Live erleben.

Vielen Dank für das Hochladen dieser Auführung. Allerdings stimmt es nicht ganz, dass es sich dabei um eine Inszenierung von Ponnelle handelt. Die Kostüme stammen zwar aus der Ponnelle-Inszenierung, die 1977 unter Karajan nach Wien übersiedelt ist. Die Bühnenbilder aber sind jener Produktion der Staatsoper entnommen, die speziell für Reisen (AK-Tournee!) angefertigt wurden und die offenbar auch mit nach Japan gingen.

Prey is not a bass which is what Figaro is written as. His voice is too pale and light for Figaro really. However he is able to play the role comically if not in a virile way. Janowitz was always a strange boyish soprano sound nevertheless her stage presence is very aristocratic. Balsta sounds incredible with amazing rubato and great vigor. Zednik is an incredible character tenor. Popp is ideal as Susanna and it is nice to see her with dark brown hair instead of blonde. Weikl is very animated and unusual as Conte. The orchestra sounds bright and strong.
