I'm Eastern Orthodox, but I admire Catholic and Protestant church music a lot. The Eastern Orthodox Church sees Catholics as heretics, but, heck, Christian is Christian, and adding a single word _(Filioque)_ to the Credo doesn't make you a heretic. And this mass. THIS mass. It's amazing. It's one of the best pieces of Catholic church music. Especially the Credo. It's - and this word is rarely used to describe sacred music - catchy. Can't stop listening to it.

Hi Orthodox brother! I could not agree more in terms of the beauty of Catholic music and architecture, however adding Filioque to the creed changes the whole trinitarian theology established by the ecumenical councils, and also Catholics have the wrong understanding of episcopal authority. Those two are the issues of great importance. And although I would call Catholics separated brethren rather than heretics (comes from someone whose father is a catholic) It is important to remember that they have excommunicated themselves in 1054. I wish our Catholic brothers repent and be received back to the church, Amen!

@@Lev_Tretiakov The Catholic Church has always acknowledged the Creed of I Constantinople (A.D. 381), since Pope St. Leo I ratified both the Council and the Symbol (the Creed) in A.D. 451. The addition of the filioque is a development of the Creed that in no way contradicts the earlier version any more than the development and subsequent change of the Creed between the time of the Council of Nicea (A.D. 325) and I Constantinople represented a corruption of the Creed then. The older Apostle’s Creed did not have the section of the Nicene Creed that says of the Holy Spirit “the Lord, the giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father (“and the Son” was, of course, added later), God from God, light from light, true God from true God, consubstantial with the Father.” This was added in the fourth century as an antidote to the Macedonian heresy that denied the divinity of the Holy Spirit. Moreover, the Catholic Church agrees with the Orthodox that the Father is the first origin of the divine life of the Trinity. The Council of Florence in 1438 explains: “The Holy Spirit is eternally from Father and Son; He has his nature and subsistence at once (simul) from the Father and the Son [filioque]. He proceeds eternally from both as from one principle and through one spiration.” The affirmation of the filioque does not appear in the Creed confessed in 381 at Constantinople. But Pope St. Leo I, following an ancient Latin and Alexandrian tradition, had already confessed it dogmatically in 447 (Quam laudabiliter) even before Rome, in 451 at the Council of Chalcedon, came to recognize and receive the Symbol of 381. The use of this formula in the Creed was gradually admitted into the Latin liturgy (between the eighth and eleventh centuries). At the outset, the Eastern tradition expresses the Father’s character as first origin of the Spirit. . . . The Western tradition expresses first the consubstantial communion between Father and Son, by saying that the Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son (filioque). . . . This legitimate complementarity, provided it does not become rigid, does not affect the identity of faith in the reality of the same mystery confessed. The filioque was also added, to combat Arianism. The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ and chose Peter to build the church and be the first Pope, which must live on. The Catholic Church is the true Church which some eastern sects have unfortunately strayed from. With hope in Christ, one day the Eastern Christians not in communion with Rome will repent, convert (even to Eastern Rites of the Catholic Church) and we may all strive to live a life of true faith.

First of all, thank you for your willingness to engage in a respectful discussion, my friend. Now, onto your point. You seem to suggest, correct me if I'm wrong, that the addition of Filioque to the creed was a continuing development of the creed rather than heresy. That would be a solid argument if not for the fact that, for example, clarification about the Holy Spirit made in 381, was enshrined into the creed in a proper concealeratory manner, just like all such changes should be done, as described in the book of acts, chapter 15. The addition of Filioque, on the other hand, was made singularly by the Bishop of Rome who thereby tried to attribute to himself the authority no single Bishop had. This is supported by the fact Pope Leo III himself acknowledged in the 9th century, that no Pope alone has the authority to change the creed because "it belongs to the whole church". This vital understanding seems to have been lost two centuries later, when Roman Pope has not only added Filioque to the creed, but by doing so claimed the supreme authority over all the other Bishop, contrary to how it was done in Acts 15 and in 7 ecumenical councils that followed. So, 381 addition and the addition of Filioque are not merely the same. If you have something to add, please feel welcomed to further participate in our discussion, thank you

When I left home for the USAF in May 15 1989, I was on the right-hand side of a DC10, scared of the future, had a Walkman on, with the Credo from this mass queued up. As soon as the pilot goosed the engines, I hit play. Takeoff, climbout and first turn were done with the Credo blasting in my head. And this Benedictus is best Benedictus. By far.

Thanks a lot. What confuses me is that every score i find and every version i listen to has only 2 Credo-Cues for Tenor and Soprano!!! It would have made much more sense if the whole middle part with the soloists was the Credo-Part and in the beginning and at the end tutti (witch choir) sing Kyrie.

@@SPscorevideos The whole "più andante" in the Kyrie-Movement with the soloists singing sounds like what i would consider to be the Christe Eleison part. Musically in this mass i hear Kyrie (Choir, andante maestoso) - Christe (Soloists, più andante) - Kyrie (Choir, andante maestoso). But in this case, we only hear the words "Christe Eleison" for three bars (1:16), not even sung by the whole quartett but just Tenor and Soprano. The only thing that happens there is that it suddenly changes to C-minor. But otherwise i'm used to hear a very clear difference between music for the Kyrie and music for the Christe part. Just compare it to other Kyrie movements: - The Spatzenmesse (K317) has very distinctive themes making the order Kyrie - Christe - Kyrie - Christe clear to everyone, or - in Mozarts Requiem the kyrie-theme is presented by the bass with slower notes and a distinctive diminished 7th jump from b-flat to c-sharp, while the alto presents the Christe theme with its fast coloratura... I'm just having a hard time understanding (or accepting) that Mozart really intented it this way, no matter how young he was. And I can't find anyone discussing this short christe cue of three bars in the internet either...

It's a wonderful mass, I'm Russian myself, and it's a pity that there are no such services in the Orthodox Church (of course there are other features, and its own beauty, and there are Catholic and Protestant churches in Moscow), but still, sometimes you want to listen to such deep masses live, and it's tiring to take the subway to the conservatory or look for a Catholic church somewhere. But if you forget that, then this mass warms your soul very much, and it is very surprising that Mozart could achieve such a rich sound with such a small orchestra. And thank you for sharing this post.

You would have very little luck finding this kind of music played in an average Catholic Church these days, unfortunately. The Church has had much of its beauty and art stripped and dumbed down since the Second Vatican Council. Every once in a while, though, you do find the odd mass with a bishop where music like this is played. One such mass occurred in America with Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke. It was a requiem mass that was accompanied by Mozart's famous Requiem Mass in D Minor.
