I’m adamantly standing on my island with my theory that the reason he failed his world was by not killing Jean Gray in X3 the last Stand. This subsequently lead to the death of more humans and the entirety of the X-Men, which then led to jeans death by either human technological forces i.e. a sentinel , new technology, etc or wolverine ended up killing her like he initially should have . The way it happened the last stand. But his initial denial to do so lead to massive consequences. He couldn’t do what he had to WHEN he had to.
