Unfortunately, when people want the “perfect dog” and want papers and purebreds, it perpetuates these unscrupulous breeding practices. Breeders knowingly breed dogs with health issues because they only care about the money. Hopefully more people will realize that they can love a dog, even if it’s not a purebred. Love doesn’t require a pedigree.

@@JayNAmyHiatt Yes, it's completely predictable that someone who makes their living breeding dogs might not have your interests, or the interests of the dog, first in mind. I'm sure there are reputable breeders somewhere. But the ones who speak up are so typically defensive that I can't help but question the motives of all of them. It's such a strange way to make a living ... selling something that's abundantly, virtually free everywhere in the world. I know it's judgmental, but I can't help but feel this: If you go to a few shelters over a couple of months and don't find a single dog you think is beautiful and desirable, then I have to question why you want a dog in the first place.

My dog is a rescue. I was looking at a website, and his photo really pop up. Mostly because he was so skinny, so his head was covering most of his body. My criteria was that the dog must be hypoallergenic. He as advertised as a Poodle. He turned out to be a Bichon Frise. He was found on the street by his foster with almost no hair. He's only 2 years old when he was found a couple of years ago. He has arrhythmia, so general anesthesia with prior meds is a no-no. He likes to take long naps, probably because he gets tired easily. As a Bichon, a standard skin issue was built in, so he has allergies...including pollen. He has anxiety, plus his eyesight is bad, he would bumped into things when the lighting is not really bright, so leaving him alone is a challenge. But he's mine, he's the best, and he's perfect. ❤

I work at a vet clinic and i cant express to you all how important it is to adopt. We see more issues in dogs that came from breeders than the ones who came from rescues. Sure some of the ones that do come from rescues need a little extra TLC some times. But once they find humans who actually put their love, time, and effort into them, they are the sweetest pets you will ever witness! Too mamy pets out in kennels needing to be saved. Spend your money on them. They give back so much more than money!

Part of the problem is what has happened to the vet industry and dog food. I have Celiac Disease so I can't feed any dog food with wheat, barley, or rye. The vet said I could not feed grain free due to Dilated Cardio myopathy because they contain pulses. So I cook for my dog. The Vet doesn't like that either but has given me no other option. There are one or two foods out there that I have researched, but it would be well over $200 a month to feed my dog. I would adopt another dog in a minute, but I just can't afford it, and I dislike everyone telling me I am a bad dog parent. I'm not cooking their food based on some fad, but they all treat me like it. So I can't rescue another dog even though I would love to.

@boycott2720 I mean, I absolutely get it. Pets are expensive. They aren't just an accessory. So you need to be prepared not only in your house but also financially in the long run. It's tough. There are solutions, but when you get a pet, it's more than just what you want for them. It's what's best for them. Just like having a child. Some people don't agree, but it is a living being that needs someone to help take care of it. I give you respect for trying to find a solution for your dog, though! A lot of people don't care enough to put that much effort in. I know the clinic I work for knows life is tough and things are expensive and we definitely try our best to be understanding and lenient with certain charges and/or bills. I know not every vet clinic is like that. Keep your chin up and do the best you can for you and your pet! I wish you the best of luck! Also, I want to make it clear that I do not think you are a bad pet parent! From what it sounds like, you are wonderful! And I truly hope that it works out for you to get another pup soon. As a fellow worker on a clinic (assistant) and who have worked on a shelter before, i couldn't agree more with you, even more so because here in Brazil there's a LOT of strays on the streets and many shelters with puppers needing a place. I feel very saddened when i hear about someone who bought a dog (for example, a pitbull) and completely neglects it, as if they just bought the status of having a pitbull. If you're thinking of getting a dog, think well. I won't say ''all mixed dogs have less problems than purebred dogs'' because i don't have evidence to say so, i feel like it would be wrong, and in some situations getting a mixed sometimes isn't the best option (as commented by the person above, who's not a bad dog parent at all) since it's difficult to tell how big they'll get, but purebred dogs do have problems associated with their breeds, and i feel like not everyone knows that. It is important to know because after all, you need to know whether or not you can afford to pay for those problems in the long run, as to not get in a tight situation and have to resort to abandoning. Much love, everyone, stay safe and take care of your puppers.

And the fact you didn't let him stud for puppies, which he may have done well before two years if he was left with the breeder or bought by someone else. In which case more puppies with his problem would be out there. There ARE some good breeders who do important cobservational work on rare breeds, and some that work hard to dial back the modern day extreme features of breeds that used to be more balanced, in cooperation with vets and breed origin research, but they seem very rare in the US, you'll mostly find those in Europe, where the standard is a 3 year hidden faults insurance in the purchase of a puppy from a national kennel club approved breeder. Which does make a difference bc if breeders have to reemburse for puppies with genetic faults they simply do a better job at avoiding such issues.

@@rebeccaabbondanzieri2484 It is a mistake to buy from ANY breeder. For any dog you buy from a breeder, a dog in a shelter doesnt get adopted. And Breeders keep breeding if you buy, so that equals even more dogs who dont get adopted. Lots of dogs live horrible lives or get killed pre maturely because people shop rather then adopt. Its better to have no dogs, then to have bought dogs. Even from ''respectable'' breeders. I say ''respectable'' because even those with the highest rating for animal health/ wellbeing/ training etc.. are still people who willingly force a female dog to get pregant, and all the risks that come with it, including death. Any genuinely loving dog parent would never even consider risking their dogs health and wellbeing for a nest of puppies. Meaning EVERY dog breeder on earth is fine with or ignorant off the health risks for pregnant dogs. Thats even disregarding the fact they contribute to pound and shelter populations. There are already to many dogs out there in need of homes. The last thing dogs need is more puppies being added to this. Everyone who liked your comment just doesnt want the extra work of a rescue while likewise wanting to feel good about themselves and not see how their actions contributed to the great suffering of other dogs. If your not ready for a rescue thats fair. The alternative should be dont get any dogs at all. (of course there are plenty easy ad beginner friendly dogs among rescue's. Just make sure to have proper contact with a reliable dog shelter that knows it's dogs.)

@soozluz right? She was acting like she was willing to put all this work into finding the "perfect dog" and still bought from a shitty byb. Like, even just a bit of research on these types of dogs would have given her red flags to keep an eye out for. I don't think she knew what she was doing at all and instead of admitting she messed up and bought a dog from the wrong person she went the "All breeders are bad! Adopt don't shop!" Route. 🙄

It's totally worth it to look outside your immediate area, because too many places are overcrowded with animals needing a home, especially pit bulls. I drove 940 miles round trip to get my last rescue dog, and almost 1500 miles round trip to get the one I have now. Found both of them on Petfinder, one was a senior, and the other was 5 years old. I'd do it again in a heartbeat, they were and are the best part of my life. ♥♥

If someone’s going to rescue a dog and puppies are available and they get a puppy, that’s great if it’s what suits them. If they’re fine with an older dog it’d be good to take an older dog but the puppies still need homes. The unfortunate reality is some dogs in rescues won’t get adopted because there’s too many. There’s definitely many positives to adopting adult dogs though, and senior dogs may be more appropriate for some households too

This, right here. This is such an important message. I knew the moment I saw Oso that he was going to have a difficult time with this health. He was clearly bred as a "designer/exotic" bully and these dogs struggle so much. Mad respect to the owners for saying that this is wrong, for adopting going forward, and for giving Oso the best possible life with love and happiness. Please, please, DO YOUR RESEARCH! If people stop buying these dogs, evil breeders will stop breeding them. They're in ONLY for the money. They don't care about these dogs. They are making money on hurting living, breathing, sentient beings. ADOPT a shelter dog. ❤❤

It depends on the breed. Some breeds must be screened for issues because they have so many. If you get one from a shelter, chances are high they will live short lives. Good breeders check the parents for genetic issues before breeding and will give you the paperwork. For some breeds, I would never chance a random shelter dog.

@@1faithchick7 I've adopted or rescued 99% of my pets, which have been many over the years. A couple of examples: I adopted siblings from a shelter that came from a breeder, Rex lived to be 19 & Annabelle lived to 19-1/2. Another lived to be 13. Another 15. On & on. Yes, I have rescued/adopted some that had known issues, some unknown, that only lived a short time, but those are my favorite because they knew love at my home before they went to the bridge. In my area, there are so many full-blooded dogs, especially bully breeds, turned into the shelters, even more so in this economy. Most shelters throughout the U.S. are swamped right now, having to kill perfectly wonderful animals just to make room for more, some of which come from those breeders, good or bad, that we speak of. So again , I firmly stand by my disseminating the myth that all shelter/rescue/breed specific animals (dogs) are damaged goods! I can't bear to think of all the unconditional love I would have missed out on had I believed that myth. 🕊️🙏❤️🕯️🐾

Did you know that we also import 1 MILLION dogs a year too and whelp litters of puppies and kittens that can be aborted? Plenty of shelters are borderline mills. There's absolutely plenty of reasons people can adopt. They want a predictable dog, they want a dog that has health and temperament tested sire and dam, they want a service dog, they want to show and sport, they want a puppy, they want support from the breeder for the entire life of the dog? Go ahead and rescue but not everyone wants that or wants to deal with the unpredictability that comes with one.

Oso is adorable but his health issues make you realize that even with the high price associated with a breeder doesn't guarantee a healthy dog. Oso was fortunate in his adoption. Some people would demand their money back and he would wind up in a shelter. I am so glad that is not the case. This is a great family. Humans and dogs together.
@Smithpolly
@Smithpolly 7 ай бұрын
Can you demand your money back in such a case? I mean, I assume if someone is looking for this particular type of dog and had done even the most basic research, they must have come across the information that the dog's head is too heavy for the dog's body and that there will be health problems associated with that.
@CptkUrk1287
@CptkUrk1287 7 ай бұрын
@Smithpolly You can actually because breeders usually have "health guarantees." This means though, that the puppy with health issues will be sent back to the breeder who then has no use for the dog. The dog will either be euthanized and generally not by a vet either. Dropped off at a shelter OR EXTREMELY neglected at the hands of the breeder who again has deemed the animal useless.
@heidibee501
@heidibee501 7 ай бұрын
@@Smithpolly It would depend on the conditions of the sale. Are breeders allowed to customize animals in ways that affect the animal's health or mobility? It doesn't seem right to me. @Smithpolly
@Smithpolly 7 ай бұрын
@@CptkUrk1287 They may have "health guarantees" but I'm sure "Terms and Conditions apply" and " You should have read the small print" will come in to play pretty quickly if a breeder is selling a dog that is pretty much guaranteed to have health problems because the face is too flat like a pug's or the head of the dog is too heavy for the body to carry like in this case.
@Smithpolly
@Smithpolly 6 ай бұрын
@@heidibee501 I just don't think that it's possible that someone buying a pug today, wouldn't have come across the information that their flat faces causes them health problems. She was a golden beauty with the best personality and loved everybody. I had had three rescue chows in my life so I insured her at nine weeks. She had entropion (eyelashes digging into her eyes), congenital cataracts, bad joints …. And died at nine from double pneumonia. She was, of course, under treatment, but stopped being able to breathe due to her short nose. One of the best dogs I ever had and if I wasn’t insured, I would be living in my car.
