My Grandfather was born in 1864 and the day before, his oldest brother, who was 17 had walked behind their very gentle horse and for a reason no one will ever know, the horse kicked him in the forehead, knocking him unconscious and he died later that night. The same thing happened to my sister! Some maniac driver got impatient and honked his horn, spooking the horse and causing it to rear, dislodging my sister and then falling on top of her. As he (the horse) struggled to get up, he struck my sister on the base of her skull with his forefoot. She leaked cerebrospinal fluid for twenty-four hours, but then it slowly dried up. X-rays showed only a tiny hairline fracture of the skull and she wound up recovering without any significant treatment. But it was *really* scary at the time!!!

Only one night in hospital? She's so lucky bless her, and only two weeks to recover the feeling in her foot. Just goes to show that no matter how awful something is or looks, it is usually not as bad as first feared. When someone is conscious the whole time, enough talk, to cry or feel nausea etc, that is a good sign, specially with a head injury. Glad she recovered, and it is not the horse's or her fault, it's just a freak accident, chalk it up to experience and move on :) x

Slightly unrelated to horses, but certainly related to farm / larger animals - my father worked on a dairy farm for 47 years before retiring. Other than the odd trodden foot he was fine. One August bank holiday he took our beloved family dog for a walk through a public right of way in a field he’d frequented thousands of times, the only rusty old sign on the gate stating ‘bull inside’ (never has there been any bull in that field). Unbeknownst to my father they had put a calving mother in there, but they weren’t visible until he was 1/4 of the way in the field. He wasn’t anywhere near them, but the next thing he remembers is being on the ground & being trampled on by a herd of cattle (around 12 cows). If it wasn’t for a passer by who saw the incident (he lived on the newly built housing estate just behind the gate) my father wouldn’t of made it. He came away with a punctured lung, stitches to the forehead, 3 broken ribs, & from the knees down to his ankles on both legs he had the skin stripped to the bone / muscle & spent 4wks in Addenbrookes having reconstructive surgery etc. Even after all of those years working with cattle.. they’re unpredictable. I once had a friend who became paralysed from being bolted from her horse (waist down). Beautiful animals but incredibly powerful too. So glad she’s ok & made a full recovery. She had a wonderful team on her side ❤️ xx

@@ishita8361 cows can be very aggressive. Especially as you seem to have missed the key point: "calving mother". Cows are very very protective of their calves. Don't go anywhere near a cow with its calf/calves. Especially not with a dog. And if you have a dog with you and the cows start to follow you, let your dog off the leash to run away. If you're lucky that will distract the cows and they will follow the dog. The dog can outran the cows, you probably can't (cows can run much faster than most people think)

I don't horses that are for races, bronx, or what not. it also depends on what the horses diet and what they feed to horses and what is put in their food, and diet.

Horses have a tremendously powerful rearward kick, it's important to never stand behind them for that reason.

They couldn't figure out what was wrong with her nose So eventually they ended up testing the actual fluid. What they found was that she was leaking brain fluid. What had happened was she played baseball and she had been hit between the eyes with a baseball. That had cracked her skull and has started leaking brain fluid. This is diagnosed in the winter so she was leaking CNS fluid 4 months.

@@madkhilla22 exactly, back in the day when they were a necessity and we didn't have cars. because its fun. its pointless to have a horse but its a hobby. as for the transportation, they probably are still less deadly than cars. also since they are domesticated they sadly cant return to the wild
@nknife2149
@nknife2149 3 жыл бұрын
@@EverHillsRanch yeah, if they're already domesticated there's not much you can do but try and give them a good life, what I was mostly talking about in that since was when people actually go out and capture wild horses in order to domesticate them. now I don't know too much on the matter so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but that's the part that seems cruel to me, like say sure your not gonna let your dog out into the wild it's a dog whos been domesticated for decades and mostly would have a hard time without human help, but its stupid to go out and get a wolf as a pet, sure it may be " domesticated " but its a wolf there's only so far you can get with them even when raised from a puppy.
@EverHillsRanch
@EverHillsRanch 3 жыл бұрын
@@nknife2149 yeah they do that to “control the population” but they could actually just sterilize the horses and release them again like people do with cats. Capturing a wild horse would be too sad tbh

CSF is Cerebral Spinal Fluid. I had a First Aid course that I remember from College and the straw colured liquid the paramedic is describing is exactly what we were taught. Basically CSF is what is supposed to help keep the brain lubricated, not really supposed to come out I don't think. But obviously it can do in accidents such as this.

My horse accidentally kicked me when I got too far under her while trimming her hair around her hooves. We were waiting for the farrier, she'd lost a rear shoe. Decided to get some grooming in while we waited. She went to move a fly off with her rear leg and caught me in the temple. Sent me sprawling. Ginger was ground tied, but she came over and stood over me until I could sit up. Pulled myself to standing by holding her neck. Thankfully, it was the unshod hoof that got me. I can't imagine how awful a true kick would feel. Really scary.

I work with horses. I've been stepped on, bittten, thrown off, and kicked, and I know I'm potentially risking my life every time I take one of the young ones out of their stable. I just hope that a kick in the head or the breastbone have enough impact to kill me on the spot. I don't think I could live as someone with a disability and never be able to play with the horses again. Good girl for having the strength, knowledge and bravery to ring 999. Lots of us equestrians try to pretend to be braver or in less pain than we actually are. Hope she's recovered well and that this hasn't ruined her relationship with her horse or her sport.

As a former horse owner, I know how unpredictable horses are and have been kicked myself, and twice nearly in the head. Once turning someone else's horse out in the field, and lunging my new horse who was very excitable. So I recommend wearing a helmet when handling horses, especially if you don't know them very well. And always keep your head away from a horses head, cause it bloody hurts, I got smacked in the nose by a friends horse, and I saw stars, luckily it wasn't broken, but it felt like it.

I do walk behind some horses but there are many horses at our stables I do not walk behind, the horses that I do walk behind I trust not to kick or use their legs in any way towards me (without reason like spook or something). of course trust isn't enough and it can always happen and a spook can do a lot to a horse you wouldn't expect.
