This is a full tour of a cozy cob micro cabin built by Marie France Roy, a professional snowboarder from Canada. She wanted to build a home with natural and reclaimed materials so the main floor is built with cob - a mix of sand, clay, and straw - and the upper floor is built with reclaimed cedar siding. She also used secondhand windows and other materials that were used or on their way to the landfill to reduce the impact of her project.
For heat, she uses a sealed woodstove and has backup electric heat if she's leaving the house for an extended period of time. For water and waste, she's hooked up to a well and septic.
She is currently using propane for her stove and hot water heater but has bought and activated a system to produce and collect methane using food waste. She hopes to eventually transition to using homemade gas instead of propane.
The tiny cob house is plugged onto the grid but she also has a small solar panel array to feed renewable energy onto the grid.

I believe everyone is as amazing as her. It just takes, time, effort, and willingness to learn and grow with the help of others. Some of us are just too wrapped up in our own drama stories, and just concentrating on survival. Others are putting their efforts into other passions, that's what makes everyone different and interesting.

This is absolutely gorgeous. Not only has she created a stunning, really beautiful and comfortable looking home for herself, but she has also used so many materials that would have ended up in a landfill otherwise. Just love this. One of my favorite tiny homes, and love it even more because she built it herself. And hahaha, "My dad was swearing a little bit" and she has a PEE toilet in her bedroom. Freakin' love this woman! :) So chill.

A really smart idea to put a toilet in the house, especially upstairs in the bedroom area. No one wants to have to go down a flight of stairs, through the house and outside to get to the outhouse in the middle of the night in good or bad weather.

Thank you so much for featuring a cob house. So many get hooked into the 'tiny house/bus paradigm', but cob is a really affordable option for those who prefer country life. Remember that you can host a workshop ['educational work party'] to possibly help with a lot of the work, and cut your costs significantly-even if you hire an experienced cob builder to run the workshop [for a set amount *or percentage of the student fees 'over a certain amount']. Mixing cob with a bobcat I've heard is ideal for those who want to speed up the process; a tractor with a bucket can also work, but might take longer than the nimble bobcat. Cob Cottage Company is a good place to look for workshop links. Regards.

Yes, for a lot of people a paper degree is a waste of time (even worse if you go into debt for it!). Most of the important things are not taught in school/university but there is of course a reason for that. It is important to divide people so that you can control them easier. masakasama everything you said is true. I remember watching documentaries and being so sad to hear how the hippies turned into yuppies. But that knowledge about why so many back-to-the-landers failed helped me make my plans more realistic. It’s heaps and heaps of work! When I mention wanting to go and live out somewhere to homestead as much as possible, friends sometimes say “oh that sounds so nice and relaxing, I’d love to do that” I just nod and think to myself “it’s gonna be more work than anyone realizes, and probably not as ideal as you think!” But knowing it’s going to be extremely hard work, is one step closer towards actually accomplishing the work necessary and not backing down when things get rough.

It's an awesome idea, but at the moment the cost of those systems are so outrageously expensive that the amount of time it would take to pay for itself is ridiculous. The only real advantage to that system is reducing the carbon footprint, not to say that's a small thing, but until that system and others like it, can get further along in the mass distribution and marketing of them, they will stay out of reach for most people. Hopefully videos like this will help bring awareness to those kind of systems.
