Smartphones have camera “eyes,” microphone ears, speaker mouths - they even have gyroscopes to mimic our sense of balance and spatial awareness. But what can’t they do? Smell. But an MIT physicist is on a mission to change that.
In February 2021, MIT announced the creation of the “Nano-Nose.” As Freethink previously covered, the Nano-Nose was able to detect prostate cancer with accuracy comparable to a dog’s. The current Nano-Nose looks like a slightly chunky smartphone attachment, and is both biological and electronic.
The Nano-Nose contains living cells grown from the ones in our noses responsible for our sense of smell. When exposed to a scent, these receptors go up or down through an electrical current, drawing a picture of the scent. This is then analyzed by an AI, telling us what the Nano-Nose is detecting - technology inspired by what we know, and don’t know, about the nose.

What do you think we could do with the power to smell disease?

I can smell it too, I know my ex husband will have Parkinson’s dementia later in life. For me the musky smell is so strong I could barely even sleep next to him… the pillows, his clothes. Nothing got that scent out… it smells like an old man’s hair, or like a nursing home, or really stale bed sheets, spoiled body oil. No matter how clean he was that smell was there.

I can usually smell if someone is an alcoholic. My ex wife smelled me after a wild night and correctly predicted that I would be homeless very soon.

I can smell cancer. I thought only dogs could. 2 people in the past 20 years I could smell it they are both passed away of cancer throat and stomach. My mother currently has this awful smell and I told her she needs to get checked because she smells like they did.

I had covid just before christmas 2023 I could smell myself even showering 2-3 times daily and the sweat had wax type feel. My cat would not come near me. I have Parkinson's also and said to my doctor about this, and she said that out of all the patients that she has seen that had covid, only two had reported the smell and the wax like sweat, both have Parkinson's. 🤔

It really doesn't have to be in a smartphone, nor small, to be life changing. Artificial noses could very well be the revolution Theranos pretended to be. Put one in every pharmacy and doctor's office and you would just have to take a 15 minutes appointment every 6 months to get "sniffed".

Second video of this amazing woman, how she was able to smell her husband's Parkinson without knowing it at the time, then at a meeting with many Parkinson patients must have blown her mind.

In England you have a hard time getting an actual growth investigated good luck telling them your sweat smells acrid and getting any tests done. Doctors also instantly dismiss at home results and online symptom checkers, it would take a lot to win them over to a more patient controlled/intervened treatment and care plan
