Rama said in valmiki ramayana 2.24.20 "As long as a woman is alive, her husband is her god and master to her" . Ram in Ramcharitamanas जिमि सुतंत्र भएँ बिगरहिं नारी Means "Independence ruins women" . . Gautama dharamsutra (18.1).-'A woman is not independent with respect to the sacred Law' . Baudhāyana dharamsutra (2.3.44). Women do not possess independence . Vashistha smriti (5.1).-'A woman is not independent; the males are her masters. . Vishnu smriti (25.12).- A woman shouldn't act by herself in any matter.' . Yājñavalkya smriti (1.85). There is no independence for woman at any time.' . Brihaspati smriti (24.2).-'A woman must be restrained from even slight transgressions by her relations, by night and by day she must be watched by her mother-in-law and other ladies of the family. . Shukraniti (4.4.11, 23).-'Women have no separate right to the employment of the means of realising the ree ends of spiritual merit, wealth and pleasure

The Bhagavad-gita says Krishna accepts everyone and everyone can attain Him, everyone is a soul. But the body and mind are different. Mother Saraswati is on a different planet, the wife of Lord Brahma. It's not about material knowledge, its about understanding we are not the body, we are spirit souls, parts and parcels of Krishna, the Supreme Spirit. Our duty is to surrender to Him and serve Him. Grihastha ashrama or married life is for both husband and wife to help each other serve Krishna. Hope this helps.

I'm also krishna consciousness but things like this makes me sad.... Only we need to follow krishna...he greatly describe women as angels not like only homemaker.... And if they say about women Harresment then we must keep every boy inside home and they will take care of the household and women will work...and during pregnancy they will take a leave and then again go to work and men must remain at home to take care of the household and the child.

Prabhuji, i have seen my mother. She is the most dedicated homemaker i have ever seen in my life. She takes excellent care of our home and our family. But my father always insults her saying that "you dont earn money and ur works can be done by a maid servant. I see her getting insulted and unloved every single day. She cries in aloneness and says this is her destiny. My father takes the car and goes out whenever he wants but me and my mother are not allowed to use his car. My father doesnt even give her any money allowance. I myself am a doctor and pursue higher degree but my father discourages me everyday saying that being a doctor can never be any successful for a woman. He is even not in speaking terms with me because i have decided to study 10 hours daily and crack the entrance exam for post graduation. He continues to torture my mother.Prabhuji, if this is the living reality of present day, then what can a woman expect from her father, husband and even a man!!

Her children appreciate those efforts and that's enough. Father will appreciate it too, once he will get old and there will be only his wife or his daughter in law to take care of him. Also as a children, it's your responsibility to make your father aware of mothers efforts. It's always better for a family, if there is a women at home. Working women should not get married. Role of a husband of working women is barely a sperm donor and nothing else. Once women gets child, husband is useless. She have enough money to hire servants to take care of child. Husband can be just thrown away.

Yes I agree vedas treat women with utmost respect. But I don't agree that women needs protection like children. Father, brother, husband and sons are protecting women from whom. A man can travel around world but women can't because she will be raped. But who is raping her? MEN right? So men are protecting women from men. So if men start respecting women then there won't be any such problem. And women were asked to study home science no matter how talented she was. But now atleast some women have option to choose what she wants to do. That's great isn't it. Women also have their individuality.

Dear women were excellent in every activity. From homescience to mathematics. Before nobody questioned them for right to education. But after invasions everything got exploited and our knowledge was lost. Everybody knows that they must respect women but have to be careful all the time. He said there were chances of exploitation and will always be. How can one trust any men just like that? Now matter how much u teach everyone , nobody knows wen there minds goes crazy. Previous era was much open minded, liberal , intellectual than we are today.

As he was speaking about the treatment of women these days, it's no good eve-teasing, dowry cases, etc. However, there might be exceptions but it is not that women are not mistreated. I certainly don't support women who falsely accuse men of doing nonsense stuff, but as he told women r given loads of respect, that isn't true's it is a hoax. Many cases of disrespectful behaviour towards women r reflected in our society. That's what I wanna convey.

Although rape is not legally allowed, it is a fact that a woman likes a man who is very expert at rape.” (SB 4.25.41) “When a husband less woman is attacked by an aggressive man, she takes his action to be mercy.” (SB 4.25.42) “Generally, when a woman is attacked by a man-whether her husband or some other man-she enjoys the attack, being too lusty.” (SB 4.26.26 I don't know these statements are from our scripture or not but it is not acceptable in any cost.

@@nonenone2647 there are certain qualities if one man do have that then only he can be called a pati otherwise he falls from the stature of pati and same goes for women. Pati is like shelter and patni is to be sheltered if one man can not earn then he should not marry. He should see all the women like mother except for his wife. Rules are made for both of them in grashta ashram. If a man is seeing some women other than his wife then he is guilty and liable to punishment as per the shastras.

It's a misinterpretation of Mahabharata and Ramayana, that the war was due to Draupadi or Sita. It's like blaming the victim rather than the culprits. The war of Mahabharata was solely due to Duryodhana who was the manifestation of the greed of Dritarashtra. The Ramayana war was due to Ravan only who stole lord Rama's wife Sita.

Nowadays abuse and rape are not gender issue anymore so men also need that protection but we are not going to lock them inside. Thus it seems the obligation to not give women independence is built upon a a need for saftey. In the satya yuga women could roam freely through their own lustre. Of course then, men were chaste and thus women didn't have to worry about being assaulted when alone. From my interpratation of the Hindu scriptures, and even from what modern feminists say, we must strive to create a Satya yuga enviornment where women could roam more freely without worry..

Actually these words means,dhol means drum,ganwar means who doesn't have manner,shudra here doesn't means shudra its kshudra doesn't by birth but by karma(like thrives,robbers,liers, undisciplined etc.)and pashunaari means women who are like animals character,does sex before and outside marriage should be punished and there is nothing wrong in it.

Can't believe I am listening to this in 21st century. This looks like from stone age. I personally visit Iskcon frequently, and will continue my devotion to Krishna for life. But any argument that supports subjugation any section of society will never appeal to me. Its not about feminism. It's about humanism. I was planning to take diksha in future. But now that ain't gonna happen. Surprisingly this point of view has so many supporters!

Women's body are not fragile. They can be beasts. I've seen some athlete women who are very strong and can lift even an adult man. So maybe Prabhuji is wrong here.

+Jaya Madhava das With all due respect, if you see people on the basis of the soul itself you would never discriminate them on the basis of gender and would readily accept women to become Sanyasis. Please do not condemn the Western civilization or anything in the world for that matter, please respect the fact that there are other civilizations in the world that have sprung parallel along with ours. The Western world is the reason why your life has become comfortable and the sole reason you are conversing with me from one part of the world to another, moreover it does not sound good to hear despising words from a well-mannered individual like you. I am a regular at ISKCON, Mumbai and go there every Sunday evening for Youth Meetings being a Christian because I believe in accepting all religions with an open heart and only absorbing those aspects of all religions that are spiritually valid and most importantly- humanitarian and rationally-applicable to the contemporary world we live in today. I believe only in the religion of Humanity, not hate, I believe in Brotherly Love and Goodness, through good thoughts, words and actions, and not dogmatism. It is sad to understand what fundamentalist brainwashing has done to the most ancient religion in the world. I can only pray to God (Krishna, Allah, Jesus, he has many names) requesting him to keep the brotherhood between people of my great nation known as India, especially between my Hindu and Muslim friends, intact. I can only pray, I am helpless. Learned people like must help me in this endeavour.

Hare Krishna Ranjeev Thanks for the question. Each of us are in a certain type of illusion. A soul in a man's body is under a different illusion while a woman is under a different type of illusion. And each of them have their strengths as well. Unless one know the absolute truth, to say something say as a strength, weakness or an illusion does not make sense. The Vedas know the absolute truth and based on that have prescribed roles for respective genders and varnas that can help them capitalise on their strengths and conquer their weaknesses. For instance, a brahmachari has to conquer his urge for the opposite gender(weakness) from 7 to 18-25. So, in this period he is conquering his weakness. And once he has conquered this, he is ready to utilize his strength, power , knowledge in protecting a family, nourishing them(getting married) or be a celibate all life. For a woman, she is taught how to become chaste to husband. Basically, the guru is chaste to god, the husband chaste to the guru, the wife chaste to the husband, the children chaste to their mother's words. In this way , it is organized so that everyone can go back to Sri Hari's lotus feet

The so called prohibition of Vedas for Shudras and Women arise from them not doing Upanayna and formal study. As such, there is no prohibition of opening up a boo or going online to read the Vedas. That being said, can you understand the Vedic texts without the aid of a guru?

I don't care if it's Vedic or not, this is only a way to keep women down and men feeling superior. It's just wrong to even suggest anyone is inferior in any way...we are all human. I don't have to look at a woman as my mother to respect her...we could cooperate with each other without the necessity of the Varnarama system, which has led to the oppression of women and dark-skinned people in India. There are some "ancient" thought that needs to stay in the past.

Nowadays, more and more women are getting highly educated, doing various jobs, getting married late and delegating the care of household and children to servants. I, myself, am a highly educated western woman who has lived life basically alone. The question is how does this modern entanglement of women in the material world aid society and advance spiritual culture? When I first came to India, I was amazed at how Indian people loved, supported and spent time with their children. As a westerner, I had not experienced that direct, loving personal care that is so freely available in traditional Indian families. Its true that in Indian families where both parents do specialized jobs, children are still loved because that is deeply ingrained in Indian culture. But I also see that those same 'modern' families are drawn more and more toward the fulfillment of material desires, an eroding of higher values and spiritual goals and an acceptance of mundane life as the parameter for their lives. We should not forget that education, ability to earn, a high standard of material life are nothing but externals. But the real essence of life, the opportunity for the development of the highest spiritual goals, the exaltation of the core self, i.e. the soul, in its highest and purest form is slowly disappearing.

I do not see why Hindus are too senstive of marraige by choice. Gandharva Vivaha is not deprecated (but nor is it lauded). Of course, parents should have some say in who the women (or man for that matter) should marry.

Men prefer women getting married to them and cook clean for them and their parents. It's a selfish arrangement and they would prefer a woman to behave like this after marriage. It's a selfish need which they are trying to institutionalise in name of family values and respect. It's an arrangement where they want as all chores to be done submissively by women who were not given education. Laxmi at home who is suppose to several every family member of man she married to. Man on the other hand enjoys education, financial independence, persues all his dreams and enjoys the perks.
