my guess, a combination of a natural ability and practice! not everyone can see the full spectrum of colour, and many struggle to find the minor nuances in color... takes years of study and honing in those skills. go to a paint store to get paint mixed to paint a wall in your house, ask for a custom matched colour, the employees will figure out how to make that color by mixing different pigments, it's the same concept.. if a paint store employee can do it, you probably can too with time :)
