I'm often asked what makes a watch worthy of being collected and today I'm going to discuss just that. Many of you have requested content specific to investment watches but I want to remind you guys, watches are not an investment, they're expensive toys. But, if there were ANY watches worth "investing" in, it would be those that many deem worthy of being collected. So what makes a good collectible watch or rather, what makes a watch a COLLECTIBLE? Take that $13,500 that was spent on a solid gold Rolex Submariner in 2002 and let that cash compound at a modest 5% for the next 18 years, today you would have $32,500. If it was a little more aggressively invested in an S&P 500 index it would be an average of 7.6% return per year and that money would be worth $50,700. Across Crown & Caliber, eBay and Watchbox a 16618 goes for between $16.5K and $24K. This "investment" cost between the owner $8,500 to $16,000 (@ 5%) and $26.7K to $34.2K (in an S&P index) in lost opportunity cost. This is before taking in to account the hit the seller took when he sold it to a dealer, servicing costs, any potential insurance the owner had on the watch over the years, etc. Hell of an investment guys, lol. Just Roman always says, WATCHES ARE NOT AN INVESTMENT!

Love ur material. Would like 2 chime in (as an "economist") on the issue of "investment" and the nomenclature/terminology (i manage money). It is NOT an investment. Investments give partial ownership to cash flow positive projects. What remains extra gets given back to the owners (dividend). I would break down the watch sector in 2. First; STORE OF VALUE. Second; the speculative side. Store of value: ur basic rolex steel subby. Speculative play; anything without a deeply liquid mkt. Maybe RMs?

That AP looks amazing, definitely agree with you on this one is a better buy than the Nautilus Baguet. I think the Roger Dubuis is around 18k? That Lange is the best travel watch hands down, I would love to get a Datograph someday. Couldn't agree with you more on the watch investment point of view, I would say it is the most fun investment that doesn't bring you monetary increase as much as passion satisfying feeling.

Love your channel! Just got myself my first very serious watch for my personal collection and I think you might like it: It's a 1995 Two Tone Royal Oak 14790 in 36mm. Not the hottest atm, as it is Two Tone but i love it! (And the price was quite fair) Best thing is, it goes insanely well with the watch i inherited from my granddad: A Omega Seamaster Polaris Multifunction from 1990 (also a Genta designed piece)

RD tag said 22558 or 25588 (if you skip first number) so I'm thinking that's either the selling price or your cost of it. If I'm close then either way that's a lot of watch for the money

People spend far more on cars that depreciate like a stone. It's a store of value for those with tens of millions that you can also wear on your wrist.

Your reason for choosing AP over Nautilus make sense considering it is a tourbillon. I agree 1000%. However, right after you put the watch on your wrist I realized that you are wearing a "cheap" cloth with an expensive stamp! Would you buy a cheap plastic bracelet with AP stamp that cost you $2000?

Good points my man. Like your comments re: watches are toys. Not investements or terrible investments. I think people like you (resellers) are the only ones set up to make a profit. For the regular Joe Blow- better investment vehicles. Nonetheless, watches are the thing now and it would seem people are interested in the hype

No one can accurately predict and controll the market. So, at the very least we all should focus on what's acually within our control: Keeping our stuff toghether including EVERYTHING that comes with a watch. Great way to maintain money retention.

I actually tried to sell mine to someone in your staff and it was as complete as this with the original receipt. I wasnt happy with the offer and ended up trading it for a black dial 166520 Daytona and money in my favor

Investments don’t always have to come with a monetary profit, so I would have to disagree with you, that Yes watch’s actually are Investments. Your investing in the quality, the joy the timepiece gives you, an heirloom that can be passed down from generation to generation, and yes some do proceed to go up in value, and yes I know that the value is never guaranteed to go up and can come down at anytime, but so can anything els. Property value goes down, stocks can go down. If that’s the case then monetarily their is no such thing as investment. But yes my opinion watches are 100% an investment. But still love your channel bro just my unimportant 2 sense.

Sometimes numbering does increase the value of the watch. I remember Montblanc fountain pens (patron of the arts collection) numbers 8. 88, and 888 went to the Chinese market for inflated prices, as did number 1 which went to Dubai.

I like the old ass Rolex Submariner gold with blue bezel. Wearing this Rolex will make me feel like wearing real money like a gold coin or a gold bar. I like the Audemars Piguet Limited Edition Baguette Tourbillon. My favorite complications are the perpetual calendar and the GMT that is why I like the A Lange and Sohn. I think the Roger Dubuis watch cost $20,000, I think it is a collectible watch because it was created when Roger Dubuis was alive. Nice teaching on the gold Rolex Submariner packaging. I think the original owner of the Rolex was obsessive because he kept all the paper works even the receipt of the Rolex.
