Today Cyprus is inhabited by numerous immigrant women from countries in Asia, Africa and Europe, among which we could notice a strong presence of Russia.
So the old homogeneity has been broken, and to talk about women from Cyprus today is to talk about a fairly diverse group.
This can be seen in the streets, where despite the absence of tourism due to the pandemic and the low season, the features of women present a considerable variety, although less than in Malta.

In Cyprus, women who are now over 60 years old had not chosen their husband, they were all married to someone who had been chosen by their parents. Some had fallen deeply in love with other men, but that union was forbidden. And those men, also in love, had to give in to the choice of their parents.
This gives us an idea of the strong changes that have occurred in recent years in this island country of the Eastern Mediterranean.
Cyprus has acceded to the European Union and therefore has access to a progressive normative framework for gender equality, which clashes with some cultural values and this is a problem, since in accordance with the EU rules, Cyprus does not not only has the framework but also the obligation to fulfill the objectives of the Brussels agenda.
But tradition, culture and religion play an important role in preserving the patriarchal structure of Cypriot society. In education and political representation, in sexual and reproductive rights, traditional values and rigid gender roles predominate.
In the streets it is difficult to see women wearing western ease, clothing without inhibitions or gestures and gestures with ease, here they are somewhat rigid for the European standard.
But times are changing. Reports of domestic violence, rape and other forms of sexual violence have increased dramatically in the last decade.
The increase in complaints can be attributed to propaganda campaigns regarding women's rights and a new legal code on family violence. Still, many of these crimes go unreported.
On the other hand, more and more Cypriot women are entering the labor market. At least 62 percent of them had a job outside the home. However, there is a wide wage gap determined by gender: women predominate in positions with lower salaries, typically employed in the areas of health, education and housekeeping.
