Well, if you're worried, there are volumes of videos where BJJ is used in real world situations here on youtube, which is more than you can say for a lot of martial arts that claim to teach self defense.

Yeah in the real world you have things called guns and knives which completely invalidate hand to hand combat. This is a sport.

Different goals. Jiu jitsu's goal is to submit the other person by choking or bending a joint to cause immobilization (or pain and the threat of breaking), whereas wrestling's goal is to pin the opponent to the mat. Jiu jitsu is often done wearing a heavy gi, like in this video, that allows for grabbing and pulling or using as part of a choke.

That's part of the strategy of gii jiu jitsu though, you can use the other person's gii for certain submissions and in doing so you inevitably mess it up. One of the black belts that I used to roll with used to intentionally pull my gii out of my belt near the beginning of every roll, and by the end I would usually end up hog tied with it - kind of like in this demo kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fdmGhrt417yvZKs.html. Also, even for the less exotic lapel chokes, it's much harder to get the choke on when the gii is tight, so part of the setup will be pulling on it to loosen it up a bit

Why?? These are Gi, the traditional uniform for nearly all forms of martial arts. Why would you make one different for men and one for women? This is equality; one uniform.
