Meet Dr. Harriet Exline Frizzell (1909-1968): arachnologist, curator, and subject of one of the most legendary oil paintings at the Academy. She described about 500 species of spiders during her lifetime, in addition to publishing tons of other materials on spider classification and behavior, making immense contributions to the field of arachnology as well as to the Academy’s current, world-renowned collections.
Meet Alice Eastwood (1859-1953), the Academy’s head curator of botany around the turn of the 20th century. She spent her storied career describing hundreds of plant species, botanizing around the nation, and violating modern-day OSHA guidelines to save the Academy’s collections from earthquakes and fire.
Meet Ynés Enriquetta Julietta Mexía (1870-1938), the first Mexican-American botanist and an adventurer who traveled the world collecting plants for the Academy. She was hailed as one of the most accomplished botanists of her time, collecting more than 145,000 specimens throughout North and South America. She summed up her outlook on life with the words, “I don’t think there’s any place in the world where a woman can’t venture alone.”
