I am not a Native American but I was at a Pow Wow and I got to watch the people dancing. The dances looked easy enough and the costumes were beautiful, so I thought I would learn how to dance. I thought it would be fun and I could learn about their culture. When I got home I got on the internet to see if there were any people that taught these dances. I found "Pow Wow Sweat". The videos were great and very easy to follow. They had family members and everyone else dancing in these videos. The dancing still looked super easy and not strenuous. Man was I wrong. The steps were learnable but required thought and coordination. The biggest surprise was how much energy it took to hop around like that. I am still learning how to dance but I am really getting into shape.
@maiingan075 жыл бұрын
Kim Nenninger Respectfully, we do not wear “costumes”, we wear regalia. There are a number of people who might become offended if they hear that term, so please don’t use it. Hope you have a lot of fun at your next Pow-Wow and all of your hard work comes to fruition. Be well, Ma’iingankwe

Old style jingle is danced flat footed. Or so I was taught. You’re not supposed to see the bottom of the moccasins. A lot of these dancers are contemporary style jinglers. I dance old style but love contemp just the same. :)

If you're native and want to explore your cultural heritage and identity (i did some research for an anthropology project on cultural revival) you could learn them now on youtube, or you could look for a local native meetup.com group to find a surrogate elder of sorts. If you're not physically able, maybe you could learn the steps by memory so you can follow along as you watch others.
