I have Brotherless Night on my shelves and I think you’ve decided my next read. The premise reminds me of a poem I used to teach called The Right Word by Imitaz Dharker about a child ‘terrorist’. I am fascinated by how similar your rankings were and also felt that you were compellingly color coordinated in your wardrobe choices as well. I am in complete alignment with Louise in terms of my own rankings of the six books (which means that Simon and I are pretty close). Apart from wondering if the Carol Shields Prize win will affect the outcome, I think Brotherless Nights is also the front runner.
@SavidgeReads
@SavidgeReads Ай бұрын
The wardrobe coordination was sheer fluke Cindy, hahaha. I think this may be the most closely aligned we have been on the shortlist before. The last time we both picked the same winner was Hamnet. I was fairly sure the Carol Shields win wouldn't affect it, and hooray it didn't, as having judged a few prizes (and soon to judge another) you are always told to forget everything except the text of the book, no other prizes, not sales, not the author, nothing.

Interesting that you didn't hear an "Australian voice" in Restless Dolly Maunder", Louise. I found it very Australian. OOOH if you go to Sri Lanka, do stay at Tree Tops Jungle Lodge, adjacent to Yala National Park. We stayed there twice. Great to hear about Enter Ghost from a teacher's perspective and Soldier Sailor from a mother's perspective. I'd be very happy with either of those winning. Seems like on the channels I've been watching Brotherless Night has been such a widely regarded second or third choice that I can totally see it winning over the jury. The Wren often comes across as terrific writing in need of a better story, so it's interesting to hear from someone who values it more.

I'm with you Simon on Soldier Sailor. After the first few pages, I wanted to say "yes, motherhood is hard, you're not getting the support you want and need, can we have some plot now". I think it has resonated with many because like Louise suggests it validates their experiences. It's a good book and I enjoyed it but as a childfree person, it didn't stick with me as much as others on the shortlist.

I think Brotherless Night will win, a brilliant read. It took me a long time to finish as I had to keep putting it down to get some distance from it. But if I had my pick, it would be The Wren, The Wren or Enter Ghost. I love the literary qualities of these two books. The complexities of character and story, as well as the ability to relay information about the Palestinian experience with such a deft hand make Enter Ghost a stellar read. She shot for the stars and got there. I read the Wren, the Wren in one day because I just couldn’t stop. Her writing just blows me away. She talked a bit about this in her reading from the book at the shortlist event and whilst it isn't auto fiction (there was a lot of discussion around why women always get asked if all their books are auto fiction and male authors never do) she was in Shanghai at the time and knows what it is like to have two cultures in her family, but that was it.

It was my favourite and Louise is so right in saying it's fiction at its best 💚 Like you both, I too cried while reading it . I also agreed with both of your insights into The Wren, The Wren. @@SavidgeReads What!? No way, I'm curious... I'm also happy it didn't win Simon. To be honest, I never got over how much that book irked me when I first read it in January. I never got over the all men are s**t attitude, especially if you'd gone through this difficult experience with a person who been nothing but supportive and there with you every step of the way. It felt a little like a disservice to them, for me anyway, that was just how it made me feel. I also didn't buy the "stream of consciousness" style. It felt more like a letter to her son, which also irked me and read a bit like a rant to an innocent child after a while. I wish it had been streamed too... So strange.

Although Enter Ghost didn't completely work for me, I think it will win...and certainly is deserving. It's the most experimental novel on the list --perhaps the most original--and it's very accomplished. Through it, I felt the tension and suspicions of living in a divided country, an occupied state. But I also would choose Brotherless Night to win the prize. Paraphrasing Simon, Brotherless Night offered everything I am looking for in a novel. I was completely moved by it. In a way, I felt like it not only was about Sri Lanka, but about the heartbreak and waste of conflicts everywhere...and how "terrorism" is born and generated...
