Muse is one of my all time favorite bands, a huge inspiration on my playing and writing. The way they use electronic and classical tension mixed with insane guitar, lyrical concepts makes them amazing. I will say this is the heaviest guitar ive ever heard them use😎

Ah, love this so much!! I’ve been listening to Won’t Stand Down non-stop since it was released 😅, and I’m so happy you all analyzed it! Also, that scream type texture after the second chorus could be that effect that they’ve used on songs like “Assassin,” “Break it to me,” and “Pressure.” Matt has talked about it in a interview for their Simulation Theory Album. Wow! It's the first time I listen to this song. I think they chose using distortion because of the job Matt Bellamy does with his voice. What he does with his voice in this song is amazing. I think that without distortion, his voice would sound too lyric tenor. Behind the distortion, you can hear the huge power of his voice. The head voice and vibratto. So perfect. It looks easy to sing but I think it's very difficult. Great video! Thanks!

That reminds me. The Divine Comedy singer Neil Hannon is quite theatrical in some of the songs. He has a classically trained voice and is also quite dynamic. National Express is a well known Divine Comedy song.

I honestly hope Matt will do some real screaming on this album, as soon as I first heard the car twitter teaser. With his shortened vocal chords that would sound so awesome, and unlike most other vocalists that do it. And with their long career and success he definitely is at a point where he can do it safely and afford very high grade vocal coaches and healthcare. There are some *very early* live performance videos around where he occasionally let's his voice break totally, I can't imagine how the now more educated and experienced tenor voice would sound when he goes for a scream for real now. Edit: Please do Meshuggah! Jens Kidman, etc.. :P The songs "I Am Colossus", "Demiurge" and Clockworks (especially at 3:30, those really breathy long almost whispering screams) would be a good reference.

One of the best bands in history, I remembered songs like Ashamed, Coma, Shrinking Universe, Dead Star, Do we need this?, The Groove, Eternally Missed, Jimmy Kane and so many other B-sides but now with a new sound, it's not that Muse has gone back to its beginnings, no, Muse today has a new sound and more powerful. It seems most folk completely miss the relevance behind the lyrics. The track has another title; 'Living Vicariously', & may be better described by a phrase 'Psychological Warfare' - from the song itself. It's about a world-wide psychological battle between a few old men (dude in a wheel chair) & the mindless pawns (represented by those under his control). So the one singing the words is standing firm; outside the visuals - getting stronger by refusing to 'stand down', which is what he would be doing by surrendering to the systemic game of manipulation by the slave-master over the masses of hapless slaves. A great song with incredibly intelligent lyrics by a most relevant band 🤔

Not sure why many people seem to think Chris is the one doing the 'screams'. It is very clearly Matt's voice. Matt also did the screams in the studio version of Supermassive Black Hole, and it is a very similar sound. Matt also performed those parts live very early on (you can find a few live performances of SMBH in 2006 where this is the case, such as at Shepherd's Bush Empire). Chris started doing those screams soon after, and basically since then has done all the screams in live performances. He would probably do the screams in this song live too, but on the studio recording, that is Matt's voice.

I always try to sing MUSE songs to practice my voice. I have to say that this song is a nightmare for singers... It's very difficult to sing. The chorus, for example, you need power from the diaphragm and voice impostation, like opera singing. "Now die alone" needs power, strength and a perfect control of the head voice. Also you have the vibratto... During the rest of the song, you need to remember where the jump to a falsetto or a higher note is. And you need to have your larynx very well trained. Changing from chest to head voice in a second is difficult. Too much. There's the risk of confusing notes. In conclusion, how can Matt Bellamy sing this??? Bloody hell!!!!

Ok Ok I just got a great idea. Two ideas for analyses. Modern day Gary Numan (who deserves more recognition anyway), just to show how is voice has matured. He's literally better now in his 60s than ever, and a-ha - Take On Me (Live from MTV Unplugged). The second one would be a great demonstration of delicately balanced higher male vocals, and he's older and has a more mature voice but he is so refined that he never even comes close to cracking.

Fantastic reaction guys ty, Muse are in my top 3 favourite bands of all time, however my personal preference is their first 3-4 albums. I found the synth elements they introduced lost much of the true Rock foundation which I loved so much earlier on, and became almost a homage to 80's synth music which sounds dated to my ears. I do love this new track but can't help imagining how good it would sound with Strings rather than Synth...

The “now die alone” is definitely not as thick as you demonstrated - I’m convinced that he is rather thin at that point, like a thin mixed voice or falsetto. The “far too long” is more a thick mixed belt.

I'm assuming a social media manager hearted my post (100% no shade you folks keep the internet working these days ❤️) but for anyone interested in a less than 600 bucks muse style vocal overdrive just run a TS-9 in parallel to your vox loop and series with a volume pedal pipe that into an aux channel in the mixer and you can replicate the legato sustenido magic.

OK so I'll sum up Matt Bellamy and his singing since I studied him for well over a year and now I can do what he is doing. How I know I can do this is because I can sing literally every MUSE song with the same tonality and same style but in my voice. It doesn't sound exactly like Matt (glad about that) but sounds like MUSE was a huge influence for me with singing. The bare bones of it is he is singing exactly like an Opera singer, his vocal wave length is actually very even all the way across as volume control teaches you how to scream without raising the volume of your voice. Opera volume control is actually pretty hard but very rewarding once you get it. Once I finish my cover of this song I will also post an image on the video of my raw wave length to show how Opera volume control is very different from volume control from other genres and how it stays even and why I don't need to do the whole "single band compression" while mixing, I actually now only have to add reverb when a song needs it because I hear it. And it helps being capable of singing a song live entirely without messing up. It is also why I can hit an F6 in whistle register, I wanted to sing the "Rage" aria from "The Magic Flute" sung by the "Queen of the night". I confirmed it was his style because he was influence vocally by Freddie Mercury and Classical. That produces an Opera singer exactly like it did for Freddie. the second confirmation was following Diana Damrau do the best version of that "Rage" aria and matching her was pretty easy once I figured out what was being done. I wanted to sing like the best singers, Opera singers are by far the best and anyone who also sings like that. Meatloaf is a good example of that along with Freddie and Matt. Finally the third confirmation, do a search for "Muse Madness Studio" first video time stamp 7:07, why exactly is he tucking his neck in like that on certain words? Is that not counter intuitive as most if not all vocal coaches will tell you not to do that because it does what? You mentioned the squeeze in his voice before, that is why it is there. I'll prove the mic thing I posted in my other comment, when I cover this I will sing into it like that because I can't get that sound out of my condenser mic that is the same mic as yours with the level at 40 and sitting back a bit to add ambiance from the room I am in if I like the sound. But this song I already did the vocals and yeah no plugin exists so I have to do it the way he did it. It does irritate me a bit to know I have to redo a vocal that was good because I can't find a plugin that would work for that and keep all the dynamics. If I was mixing the vocal and adding compression and distortion via a plugin, I'd be spending a whole lot of time with equalizers and using several different ones along with compression to get that sound when its easier to just cut the volume level and sing really close in a normal mid range voice. The screams are quiet and you are right, its why he can whisper scream. All of Matts stuff requires deep analysis because all Muse songs are different and every vocal is different and everyone has said his vocals are highly unique. Yeah Meatloaf don't sing anymore and Freddie Mercury is dead so he is one of the few using Opera vocals he learned from a heavy Queen influence as you all pointed out. Vocally he has said Freddie is who inspired him the most listen to both artists isolated vocals and yeah they are the same Freddie just hid the breaths but still there nonetheless. Don't take anything I said the wrong way I am just adding what I learned so it may help with understanding what he is doing and why every vocal is different. No disrespect meant.

The vocal performance and vocal mix are awesome all round. I'm less impressed with some of the other mix decisions. For instance, the drop after the first verse into the super-compressed lead guitar part before the full stereo mix of the first chorus comes back in...perfectly fine songwriting device to use, but to my ears the transition from stereo-mono-stereo is too abrupt. The first time you hear it the riff is actually pretty subdued, whereas it should be a standout moment before the return to stereo kicks you in the ass...simple solution is to just add some higher frequency elements to the mix (e.g., a phaser wash in the background) to make it jump out more. Also not a fan of the timing and feel difference between the end of the first chorus and return to the second verse...IMO, the mix needs something to punctuate the tempo change, as it is, it sounds pretty jarring. Terrific riffs besides though - if the rest of the album is on par with this, we're in for a treat.

My expectations for the rest song for the album is barely high now

They touched on the transition between the verse and the chorus a bit but I have some other thoughts. With there being no vocals on the pre-chorus and it being such a drastic change in rhythm I think it makes the song feels disjointed. I'm no expert but it bugs me and seems like more of an amateur songwriting move. I'd love to hear some other thoughts about this.
