It is a beautiful Sunday morning in Ljubljana and I'm up early. Let's have a look at the sights, the bridges and some of the architecture of this lovely "pocket-sized" capital city.
I'm only here for one full day, so I have to pick out just a few of the things that are worth a look at in this wonderful city. but trust me on this, it is worth much more of your time. Ljubljana is one of my favourite cities ANYWHERE in the world!
One thing is for definite though. There will be a Skyscraper!

I have to say this is BY FAR the most enjoyable video I have watched about Ljubljana. I’m Slovenian (living in Ljubljana) and check these travel vlogs about the city quite regularly - you really did it justice; great narration, a lot of information, lovely shots! ❤

@JohnnyHooverTravels Ай бұрын
@@Timstravels01 I'm sure the locals would be cringing at my pronunciation, but i give it a go. Languages with all the accents are much easier in general as the accents tell you how to say the word. Rather than the English language that just expects you to know. Best wishes to you 👍

Chiming in here as a Slovenian - you are probably one of the few that actually pronounced the name of the city correctly! 😊 One note: wherever there is a C in the word, we pronounce that as “ts” rather than “kh”. Ljubljanica river is therefore pronounced lju’blja:nitsa

Another of your very best Johnny! You're a regular Ian Nairn minus the melancholy ruminations! I've long been curious about Ljubljana and I had no idea it was this lovely. As I've noted in previous comments, you're a great commentator on architecture and you give such a well-rounded introduction to the places you visit. Don't fret getting off the train in the occasional video. These added excursions are wonderful!

Ljubljana is one of my favourite places. The views from atop the tower at the castle, looking at the Alps are spectacular. I can't wait to go back there later this year. The railway museum is a good way to spend a couple of quiet hours too. Plus there is a nice funicular up to the castle if you have had a heavy night in the Sir William pub :) Then a gentle walk back down to the historic town via the gardens.

Excellent video as ever, 7th floor of the hotel offering cabins/capsule accommodation, very unique! Ljubljana looks so very appealing. I really found the Neboticnik Skyscraper interesting as Art Deco was truly a captivating period of history. No wonder why you said you love it. Thank you Johnny.😊

@@Fan652w Yes, i know you are a big Swiss traveller, but this is maybe where our STP/Interrail argument comes into play in a good way. You could tack a few interrail days onto your STP and pop down through Austria to Slovenia just like i did. I know you will not regret it. @@JohnnyHooverTravels Thanks for your advice! And I also visit Austria a lot, often just straying over where the Iron Curtain used to be! . I usuall think, 'one country at a time'. Good video. A delightful place. Continental cities always seem, in my limited experience, so well heeled. They seem to lack the very visible signs of poverty, homelessness, and disturbed behaviour that surround me in City Park in Bradford, even though this is a wonderful place. Alcohol as a precursor for physical activity is something about which I have disagreed with many over the years, but I think you and I are of one mind on the subject! Must have been in Ljubljana around the same time as you. I went to Ljubljana Castle and went to the top of the observation tower. It was well worth the effort walking up the steps. 400 meters above sea level. Apparently, it was raised by 1.2 meters in 1982 because of course 38.8 meters above sea level isn't as impressive. 🤔

My only slight criticism is that I would add just a little bit of history. Slovenia was part of the Austrian empire until 1918 (hence Emperor Franz Josef), then part of Yugoslavia until that country broke up in the early 1990s. People of our generation, Johnny, know that. But younger people may not.
@JohnnyHooverTravels

@@Fan652w very good point. It is always a problem of writing a script that isn't too long for the content. I do find the Balkans fascinating because it is such a pressure cooker of cultures, tribes and , of course, empires playing "the great game" (usually with the lives of the locals). I would heartily recommend Misha Glenny's book "The Balkans", which takes things from 1804 up to the end of the 20th century... there's a lot of killing in it! I hope the apparent stability of Slovenia can be spread to the rest of the former Yugoslavia. Kosovo particularly is a worry right now.

@JohnnyHooverTravels Ай бұрын
@@johncrwarner hard to tell John. Lots of languages in evidence at the fuzzy log, but, of course, they all default to English these days. I thought the places I walked to were mostly populated by locals. The nightlife by the river is definitely stag/hen dos. I suspect there aren't enough UK flights to make it popular with the British, so maybe they were Austrians? But everything is always friendly 😉

There isnt much austrians here, if you go in Maribor for example the number will be a bit higger but in Ljubljana its preaty low. there is quite a few germans here but a lot are just stopping on their way south to check slovenia out and continiue down the balkans.
