Hi, I was shown this in 8th grade woodworking class. Brings back so many memories of me making a jewelry box for my mother who’s passed away now, soldering my name to the bottom of it. I’m 43 now have a candle company. Would love to incorporate this onto my wooden candle jar tops.

A big tip for shading that I have learned is to use a rounded tip piece on the burner and have the heat around medium (or anywhere less than the normal heat level you prefer to use as long as it still leave a mark) and make tiny circles. If it's low enough it will take 3-4 repetitions to get a medium level shade. So just lightly serial around in tiny circles till you fill in the space you want shaded, make sure to have a consistent pace to make sure everything is even and dark spots don't show up too frequently

Sticker paper inkjet printing - absolute genius! Why did I not know this before? Great tips, I’ve just bought a pyrography pen, so I am off to draw on wooden things!

Finally a good use for my ruined Lidl soldering station! The inkjet transfer is simple and ingenious. I haven't even thought about that... It would even be perfect for stamping small pieces of wood without wood burning!

Thanks for the tips! The sandpaper tip will come in handy for me. I didn't know about the carbon build up and was unsuccessfully trying to remove it with a damp paper towel.

Getting to know that burner in the beginning is huge! I love that you added that at the beginning. 🔥🙌 I’d like to add that there’s a quick catchphrase that really helps my students - “light, low and slow”. Use light pressure (pushing hard can break tips), lower heat (until you have more experience), and slow (be patient, you’ll get faster with practice). Keep burning!

Thanks so much! My mother got me a wood burning kit a few years ago and I just found it while cleaning my closet and decided to finally give it a go. Luckily enough I had label sheets on hand to make a tracing and I used AI to come up with a tracing for me. I made a burning of an Indian motorcycle, I can't believe how well it turned out for my first ever attempt. Thanks again

Tip for if you use the sticky back paper method. Flip the image backwards and it will be the right way when you apply the stencil.

Great video! and thanks for bringing back a distant memory! I did this way back in my young teens (more than half my life ago;) at school, combined with metal work to make a custom house name plate. Mine featured a rectangle of wood with the house name burnt onto the surface in this way. They had some glorified soldering iron then too :) I printed out text created in some application on the Acorn Archimedes (there's a clue:) but I think I just cut out the text as a stencil. As I lived on a small farm and my mum had a couple horses, I decided to make a simple horse plough on top and some styled spirals on the bottom. So I bent some metal strips using heat, an anvil and a hammer, then made a very simplified horse plough with a angled length on top, a circle for the wheel and then an elongated circle but shaped into the outline of a plough blade. Come to think about it, what a great school that was!

I asked for a wood burning kit for my birthday. Maybe I’ll get one! They look like so much fun to play with! I also have the “artistic skills of a dead horse!”

I recommend looking in your local area for wood to burn on. There are people who sell it cheap. If you are in the Mountain City TN Area, Cannons Hardwoods sells it cheap 😊

Years ago I bought the equipment for doing lamp work. The torch kind of scared me. I kept picturing me burning my fingers off. So I took the wood burning tool I had also bought and tried it out by doing a Celtic knot on a little wooden box. It came better than I thought it would! Plus I burned myself a lot while doing it. After that I was not as scared of the torch and went ahead and turned it on and lit it. I wasn't scared at all. I did manage to burn myself a few times when I forgot and touched the molten glass but if you put the contents of a vitamin E capsules on the burn and soak the gauze of the bandage with the vitamin E and keep it wrapped overnight. By the next day the burn doesn't hurt at all. And no blister. When I accidentally passed my hand through the torch flame one time and burned several fingers I gave them the same treatment. It was a bad burn but the next day no pain and within a week or so it was healed with no scarring. Vitamin E is also good on severe sunburns too. With no pain the next day and minimal peeling if any. Before I used vitamin E on my sunburns I would suffer for days from the pain. Just thought someone might like to know.
