We absolutely love this fireplace/wood stove. It has the look of a modern fireplace but inside it is actually a very powerful wood stove that cranks out enough heat for us to heat our entire house. Along with our radiant system, this stove is working hard right now as we experience negative temps outside.

@@crooksight I’ve had my Stratford 2 installed for about 2 months now and I’ve struggled with the same problem. This week I think I figured out a solution that’s working for me. I haven’t been burning my fireplace hot enough. If your bricks inside the fireplace have black build up- your prob not burning yours hot enough as well. I found that when I load the wood north south (per the fireplace recommendation), it creates cold pockets on the left and right sides and caused my doors to get really dirty. Try getting your ashes really hot- a good truck I learned is to break the burnt logs up and spread the ashes evenly inside the firebox, and then lay 3 new logs east west. This really changed my opinion of this fireplace and I love it now way more that I don’t have to deal with cleaning black glass every day. Hope it helps and works for you

I've got an older Osburn insert and absolutely love it. Mine is not a flush stove but an insert to a masonry fireplace. I replaced the fan once in the 20 some years I've owned it. Have you looked into how to replace the fan in yours? I'd be interested in seeing how it's done.
@AllAboutOurHouse
@AllAboutOurHouse 2 жыл бұрын
I have not looked into it as it’s only one year old. The fan runs every single day when it is use, so at some point down the road I’m sure it will need replacing. The thing with this stove is that there is a cavity below the firebox that allows you nice access to the fan motor. I would imagine it’s easy to swap the motor out and the fan should be good? Hopefully will enjoy this for many years before having to do that. Thank you for the heads up and thanks for joining us.

Might be a stupid question but can you still burn if the powers out?
@AllAboutOurHouse
@AllAboutOurHouse 3 жыл бұрын
That’s not a stupid question! Yes, of course. The blower fan would of course not be operational. We decided to do a transfer switch to a generator for power outages and we wired it so that the fireplace is on a circuit that comes on when the transfer switch kicks in...so, our blower fan will work during a power out, as well as our furnace. This fireplace kicks out a ton of heat, if the power goes out you could all easily be warm in the main part of your house and more.
@AllAboutOurHouse
@AllAboutOurHouse 3 жыл бұрын
Yes for sure!
@robertm5969
@robertm5969 3 ай бұрын
You can burn even without a generator. The loss of the blower fan means you lose some of the heat output as you're losing an active heat exchanger. However, air will still flow through it by convection. I would just build a smaller fire within it to be on the safe side.

Do you have to clean out the ashes before a new burn? How much space is in the firebox to contain hot coals?
@AllAboutOurHouse
@AllAboutOurHouse Жыл бұрын
I usually just scoop a little out from the sides and continue burning. There’s plenty of space for some coals to exist under the fire. All comes down to managing the air intake, type of wood, if you do it right there should not be much after a burn.

Best to keep a good amount of ash as it helps insulate and prolong the life of the firebrick. You can also shape it with a scoop to create channels for optimal airflow based on where your cold air intake is. I burn every day and scoop out some ash once every couple weeks.

@@AllAboutOurHouse This helps a ton, I was afraid if we went this route we wouldn't be able to enjoy really watching the fire. I'm assuming with the doors closed it helps the heating efficiency of the fireplace more?
@AllAboutOurHouse
@AllAboutOurHouse 3 жыл бұрын
@@PhillyPhan77 remember two things with this fireplace...you can use it as a fireplace, but you can also use it to make a lot of heat. If I were really going for heat and making a super hot fire, I would not want the doors open for safety reasons. If you need some ambience, it can do that with the doors open, but if you are burning wood all the time, I don’t even think it’s necessarily good for you to have the doors open. I like doing both open and closed but it really comes down to safety and the kind of fire you are making and what the use of the fire is.

I recently installed one in a new house and am disappointed. Heated with wood stoves for years but thought insert sounded cool. Virtually no control w damper. Year old, split, dry white oak and will only burn with door cracked open. Close door and open damper full and it burns so slow the glass is black in a couple hours and insert doors stay cool to the touch. Would never do another or recommend one. Get a real stove with better control and real heat.
@Stick1370
@Stick1370 4 ай бұрын
Did you use the fresh air intake or have it pulling air from inside the room? That could be the difference. The insert I have pulls air through a vent that goes into the crawl space under the house so it doesn't pull air from inside the house. No problem getting the fire to burn hot.

Osburn Stratford II IS NOT A ZERO CLEARANCE WOOD STOVE!!! ...... While it's probably a great stove, but it's not a ZERO CLEARANCE WOOD STOVE. The following is an email I received from it's manufacturer in July 2023. Hello Mr. Mxxxx The Lafayette is not considered a zero clearance fireplace as there are spacers that need to be respected as well as non combustible materials for the first 80 inches in the front are of the fireplace (from the base) and can not just be put into an existing chase as there are many new installation regulations as well as the chimney will need to be replaced by a 2100 degree Class A one. You will need to take down your existing chase facade. Regards Daniel Cxxxxxxx

@@glenwschneider Lafayette & Stratford are the same units, manufactured by same company under different retail names (company & model) Neither one is Zero Clearance. Neither one is a Stove. Both are steel manufactured wood burning Fireplaces. These NON Zero Clearance wood burning fireplaces must have the "house wall" of the chase made of NON-combustible material. Both require "No Combustion-able Material" for the first 80" from bottom of unit up on "house wall" of chase and nothing above the unit in chase for those 80". Your "house wall" looks to be made of real stone and I'll bet you used concrete board and steel studs for the "house wall" of your chase. A real Zero Clearance Fireplace, like the one in my living room, does not need NON-combustible material for the "house wall" of the chase. My wall is made of simple painted sheet rock attached to wood studs, with a wood mantle. PLEASE NOTE - Everyone gets this wrong. The industry as a whole needs to create a dictionary that will eliminate the confusion of what is what. Stoves aren't Fireplaces and Fireplaces aren't Inserts and Zero Clearance Fireplaces are additionally unique.
