Here's a look at what one year of wood chips has done to the garden soil. Plus, I got more than I bargained for by using Chip Drop! But I still highly recommend using them for FREE wood chips! getchipdrop.com/

I am new to Middle Tn. so I am glad to get local advice. I too have a giant woodchip pile on my driveway! Your children are the most adorable thing on the internet,

Aw! Thank you! I love gardening with the kids. It takes EXTRA patience but it's rewarding for all of us :) Welcome to Middle Tennessee, neighbor! This is a great part of the country for gardening. Did you use Chipdrop too? I've managed to get rid of most the pile so far. We put it up on Facebook Marketplace for free and had 4 or 5 families come through and grab most of it. I was getting nervous for a second there! 😅 Thanks for stopping by and good luck in the garden this year!!

Nice video. Thank you! I'm getting ready to cover most of my back yard ( in Spring Hill, TN) with cardboard and mulch to make a wildflower meadow. I've covered my vegetable garden in mulch. It really helps reduce weeds. The lighting around your fence looks great.

Hey Ron! Thanks so much. I love the idea of a wildflower meadow! That sounds great. I want to plant a lot more flowers this year too.

I had no idea the wood chips improve the soil, very cool! And great tip on sourcing them.

Thank you! Yes, any organic matter you can add to soil will improve it over time. That's why compost is so valuable in the garden. Microorganisms are constantly breaking down and feeding off that organic matter. They turn it into nutrients the plants can then use. Soil is alive and gives life!

Chip Drop actually has a commercial saying "dont use chip drop" for the exact reason mentioned. You'll get a football field amount if you arent ready for it!

Haha, yes! Love their commercials. It's a fun "problem" to have :)

I tried the chip drop site this summer. Many comments said it took months to get their chips, but I got a 25 yard pile within 12 hours!!! Did your approach of offering it to my neighbors as well. 🤣

That's awesome!! How long was that pile sitting in your driveway? I was afraid we'd never get rid of it but sure enough it was gone after a couple weeks. Super valuable resource!

Good afternoon neighbor! Are you using the "Back to Eden" methodology for your garden?
@inchwormgardens2 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Yes indeed! No-dig all the way. I keep the soil covered with a heavy layer of mulch all year (leaves or straw in the raised beds) I'll pull it back once or twice a year add as much compost as I have available. I need to improve my compost making game so I can get it finished quicker! This year I added a layer of unfinished compost in mid December. I'm pretty sure it will be mostly broken down by Spring when I'm ready to plant. It's a bit of an experiment. (like most things in gardening!)

I just started getting chips but I want to leave them in piles for a year so it will compost
@darleneswetz83258 ай бұрын
Just make your layers thicker

omg.... that is painful!! Maybe you can connect directly with the company that called you? It was probably the local truck driver.

37 years into landscaping and I never fail to tell clients to not use chips as mulch. Time allows weeds to germinate in cellulite whereas mulch decomposes at a quicker rate, and is blown away or removed on a cycle closer to the needs of your garden plants and maintenance routine. Not to forget mentioning chips are a food source for termites. Chips sound like a better avenue, especially typically at no cost, yet I cannot tell you how many times I've been called in to remove chips in the ornamental garden setting. Mulch and cellulite are not considered a nutrient source and the amount of NPK that is absorbed and then returned is marginal for the vitality or detriment of living plants. Bark mulch is not just better aesthetically, its functionality outweighs chips anytime. They are great for pathways or playgrounds where they are applied over special weed barrier (not garden grade fiberglass cloth) and at a very thick depth (8"-12" more than in garden beds).... basically creating an inorganic, built environment. You never know what you are getting in chips (poison ivy, insects, weed seeds, invasive seed species, etc.) as it is not regulated like store bought mulch. Tree companies want to discard chips for free to homeowners otherwise they have to include this cost of doing business into your price and their industry is very competitive. There is a fine layer of benefit between at the threshold where the chips meets the ground (improving soil texture), but not enough to make the overall experience worthy. Today's cardboard is excellent for short term uses, as it breaks down rapidly benefiting the soil. Back when I started landscaping, cardboard had formaldehyde and it lasted for years, often turning good soil into oolic acid. No weed could grow, but then nothing could grow (impeding air flow and water too).
