I did a wall in my office using knotty pine with this treatment ... sort of looks like the wall behind you, but with a handful of different colors. It's an amazing look ... I also burned the shelves, coffee table and side table I built for my office. I love fire! edit: by the way, doing a full wall with burning, scraping and staining a bunch of different colors was a lot of work, but worth it.

I have a friend who created a ship lap wall using Kool-Aid to dye the boards, and they turned out remarkably well. A bit lighter than the ones you did on here, but they looked wonderful. I really like the way that the deep bun boards have such a remarkable contrast throughout each piece. They are absolutely stunning. I am getting ready to surprise my mom with an accent wall in her living room. Any kind of redecorating I do for her, she is like a little kid peeking and can't wait to see the end result. I just hope that the cedar that I have chosen looks half as good as the boards that you did. Thanks for sharing! Becca

Back to your roots! THIS is what made me subscribe to you originally. Now have to bookmark and keep this video for reference for burning. P.S. Someone else claimed spraying a mist of water n board before applying dye makes it much more appealing. Maybe a quick follow up with that method.

Guess who's back....... Since your early vids I've done so many sugi ban finishes and it's all your fault 😉. From flags to outdoor kitchens to even medieval looking radiator covers. And it's all your fault. Did I say that already?. Still now I learned something new. The "c" bit. Quite important actually. .... with regards to lasers I am going to invest in one maybe soon. So then I have a backlog of vids to watch 😉. Thanks Nick 👍

Thank you sir.. for another entertaining and educational video about this process .. subscribed and watched most of all the S.S.B videos... My question is have you ever tried this on the blue stained Pine.??.. out west the beetles cause this effect on the wood.. Same thing happens here in Georgia if pine sits around in the summer humidity.. Just wondering if have ever tangled with any?. Looking forward to your response to this question and your next video.. . I will definitely use the link on your channel to buy those big torches when I get ready to pull the trigger here in the next few weeks..

I have seen it suggested to wet the burned side and the heat up the other side. It was explained that the fibers shrink from drying out.

Excellent Video! Have you ever worked with Blue Stain Pine (Beetle Kill Pine) doing Sho Sugi Ban? I am doing an accent wall and looking to pick up some of the red's, blues, and darker colors with a medium grey stain to get richer colors and more contrast than a barn wood. Have any ideas?
@BuildDadBuild

I haven’t ever worked with it. Beautiful stuff. I’d stain something dark and go over it with a light sand and then finish with a lighter color. Cheers

So Nick, you tried Kool-Aid and good dye with great results What would happen if you were to try both methods and then use a vacuum food sealer with more liquid? I wonder if it would deeply stain or all the way through? Thanks for your amazing videos

If you had a piece say 1x8 and you were cutting out the bulk of the center, could you still keep warping to a minimum when burning the inside edges? I know the design wouldn't be the same to the wood grain but maybe a light burn just to keep with the rest of the piece

I’m looking to make an American flag with light burnt pine with dyed red stripe and blue for the union stars. I’d like to add vinyl text along some of the stripes and am not sure if they will stick to the wood after a burn and dye? Before or after a topcoat. Any advice? Thanks
@BuildDadBuild

I think you’ll have a hard time getting it to stick. Ever thought of using a router or CNC.

I played around with wood burning and tried making my own dyes. It turned out pretty (peacock colors) and I covered the bench with several coats of varnish. Bad plan on the varnish. It didn't do well. It cracked off and I lost some of the color. What do you use for an outdoor finish coat over the dye?

Man colors look ok, even green or blue. I use the burning tehnique to over 100 years old houses that i restore. I hawe to burn and treat, abd brush all the pieces. And after i use a coat of protective substance that usualy it is colored in order to restore the aged look
