ODDBALL GALLERY - Keith Williams

Күн бұрын

This wood knot ball is made from 180 knot cut offs from my cabinet shop. It is basically a big knot ball or knot sphere. Although it may look like it, it is KNOT ART. This 19" Geodesic sphere is made by Keith Williams of ODDBALL GALLERY. As a fan of Buckminster Fuller and the geodesic dome, this scrap wood project is a tribute to the design.

Videos eliminate the sense of hours and hours and hours he used cutting triangles. Art is like that. A lot if tedium that someone has to push through before you can even start creating. I started a similar hexagon art project last November. But I used stainless steel. I burned out after cleaning burnt stainless after 2 months with only one bucket of hexes with no sphere or other product made. The dominoes explains in seconds how "I spent my lunch break every day for two months cutting triangles" instead of, like phoning his wife or looking at KZfaq. Hundreds of minutes.

Well as a retired wood pattern maker I find this totally fascinating. I have worked with lots of angles and now I see I will need to try and create one of these. Off to the drawing board AKA cad software to get a start. Lots of trial and error but this will be fun. I have done tumbling block turnings which compared to what you have done are rather simple. Fantastic work! Gary

chuckschilling The triangle I drew on each piece of wood was just a basic reference. The first tablesaw cut was just done by eye. That straight cut set up the first miter cut and then the second miter cut was against the stop so it was more precise.

@@ODDBALLGALLERYKeithWilliams yes. Liked and subscribed because of the plywood short first. I’m wondering how the knot polyhedron would look if you’d also turned it into a ball? Or would the irregular grain make it it too onerous a task? Both look incredible and I appreciate the amount of work and precision required to make them.

Don't know why but had to watch the short version as well. 🧐 Have you ever commented on the actual complexity of making these balls? I am thinking that, like box joints if you are only off .001 on each finger things go south rapidly. But, you seem so cavalier about making the plastic triangle etc. Can't believe it is as easy as you make it seem. Have you done an overview of your shop? Guess I need to look at your prior postings more. I found this one much more interesting because it was knot (🙄) turned. Probably because I am not a lathe guy.

Bill in Tustin Hey Bill I appreciate both views.😀👍🏼 I’m kind of new with this video thing so I’m just trying to figure out what people want to see. You are right , a little bit off on 180 pieces is a lot off during assembly. I dry fit the whole thing to check for errors. The plastic template was a bit oversize just to give me a general idea where the knot was going to be on the triangle. There seems to be some interest in a shop tour so I will probably do a video on that. I am also planning on a couple of how to type videos starting with some of the more basic platonic solids (Cube, dodecahedron, Icosahedron) I have made over 100 of these balls and this is the first one that I have not turned into a smooth sphere. P.S. I lived in Costa Mesa for a few years back in the day👍🏼

I think the truth of the complexity is given away in the stops on the two (count 'em TWO) mitre saws. I went back to the first video to look at that one more time. Did you make some caliper type adjustment for the angle on the mitre as well? Not the 120's but the under cut? Trying to dial that in had to be challenging.

Benjamin Mellor. About 2 weeks with the video added. Cutting each triangle individually added a lot of time. Sanding the flats took longer than I thought too.
