I disagree with your installation practice, sir. I don't believe you're a tradesman, my friend. The biggest mistake you made on this roof is how you installed the felt. The sun will deteriorate the felt within a year.Here's a tip for you; if you felt it properly you don't have to pop a line on every course. You have multiple keyways inline with one another especially on the starter course and first course of shingles. The nails you're using are not the correct fasteners. The starter course should be nailed as low as you can nail them. Furthermore, I seriously doubt you replaced the split shingles you created by using th wrong nails. Also, let me point out that the starter shingle didn't split because the pressure was to high in the nail gun. It split because it's a quarter inch from the edge of the shingle. Every nail should b 3/4" or more away from the edge of the shingle. You didn't lay the shingles with the crown pointing down on the starter course. One of your starter shingles is pointing straight up to the sky as if it's placing it's own destiny in god's hands. The only element missing is a double fist pump on the chest and kissing 2 fingers. There's a high influx of individuals like yourself who went to school for business, jump out here in the working man's world and think you can call yourself a tradesman. That title is earned through sweat equity and hard work. Reading "the manufacturer instructructions" does not make you a roofer. The V neck tshirt, manicured finger nails and perfectly gelled hair is the first indicator to me. I suggest you go work on getting some dirt under those finger nails and a few cuts and scars on those Palmolive hands then maybe some of us who know what we're doing will be able to take you more seriously. You give real men and actual tradesmen a bad name.

This is rather funny to me my old man is a roofer. He’s shown me how to do several types of roofs and yes I have worked with him carried shingles etc this video should be used for everything not to do. Plus if you have a crew doing this and there are that many mistakes is embarrassing number 1 number 2 is the should know what they’re doing unless they were trading for the first time and 3 get a little dirt on your hands boy.. again in just reading the comments prior and haven’t watched a roofing video in quite sometime mainly because my old man is a professional and he knows what he’s talking about. I’m just wondering if the guy talking and showing on this video is an actor or everybtouched any kind of roofing materials because obviously he can’t take videos had someone for that he doesn’t speak or teach like a roofer he’s too book knowledge and no cuts etc . But thanks because I was going to watch this too refresh my memory without asking my old man and he knew I was looking something up but didn’t know what it was and I said if I need your help I’ll let you know well honey I need your help because I don’t want to screw it up by listening to this video of everything wrong so thanks now I’m going to ask him to learn me the right way

The only right exposure is no exposure. 🙂 I'd like to see a picture of this roof after a year or so. I bet there is a lot of staining from the felt losing its bitumins.

When ever someone starts out stating “ you don’t need special training “ should send a red flag up to any customer. With all due respect I’ve been installing slate , copper and shakes for 35+ yrs and you are running that roof completely wrong. The most important ac spect to that roof is the 18” 30 lbs felt. The felt should be placed under the row you have it at now. It should not be exposed in the key ways. The exposed felt between the key ways will DEFINITELY deteriorate in years and you will have a mess on your hands . You’ve literally just cut the life expectancy of that roof 30% if not more.

I too am a 35 year slate/copper specialist and install all types of roofing. You are absolutely 100% correct in your opinion of this incompetent job! I see so many issues I'm not sure where to start but here are a few. Yes, felt is completely installed incorrect! To my knowledge only 304 grade stainless steel CEDAR shake nails are to be used or 7/16"-3/4" wide stainless steel staples of correct length. Galvanized nails are never to be used with treated cedar shakes and the diameter of the nail is causing the shakes to split or crack. Anyway, this company should take down this horrendous video and be ashamed they did this to the state of Tennessee with their incompetence.😱

@@ericstephens4307 Did you hear this puke say , The starter row is nailed wrong ? This crew has NFC what they are doing . I can see several days in depositions and a 50-75 large civil suit on the next heavy rain . Sad bunch of hacks

Yes the 18" felt the edge of it you see is what you go by to put the next row of shingles on you should only see it between the cracks of the row you cover up

So this guy installed this roof completely improper. You shouldn’t see the felt in between the shake. Don’t follow this guys instructions.

I have a question please. Is it recommended to do a partial shake replacement (perhaps 600 sf or a 1200 sf side of a house)? Specifically how is the mesh underlayment and roofing tarp paper aligned when trying to tie in existing shakes with new shakes over a large surface. Our concern being potential leaks where the new shakes abut with the existing shakes. Thanks - and great video!

I don't know what I just watched. It's surreal experience. Every point made by this guy is wrong. Starter course -wrong, paper installation -wrong, nails they use - wrong, ridge caps they use dont fit -wrong. Gotta go question my own existence. ))))

LOL We were talking last night how long it would be before the first roofer came on here and told us how wrong the installation is. Quicker than I had imagined! However, after viewing your KZfaq channel (everyone reading this should follow him) it appears that you do have a lot of experience. Can you explain in more detail what should have been done better?

Yeah so much wrong with this just, wrong nails, felt paper showing in the key ways, you don’t need the mesh with shake roof and don’t pop a chalk line regardless if it washes off . Only with shingles. I knew I wasn’t going to learn something I already know when the said “shake shingles” I would remove this video because someone who doesn’t know will think it’s done right and it’s not.

@@Super_overland LOL What a silly response. Stainless steel nails used and of course you can pop a chalk line it washes away after one rain. But we are always looking for more subs if that is what you do. We have tons of shake roofs in the pipeline because the manufacture recommends us.

@@DigitalRoofingInnovations the biggest mistake is the felt in the key ways. Have you ever seen how felt looks when left exposed. You didn’t lay the shakes and felt correctly. the felt is going to decay. The first roof you saw the felt was done right, guess that was your sub that knew what they were doing. But on the new project they didn’t.

Would not have you do my roof or any roof The shake are split where nailed . No wrong nailing cause the shake to curl . Spacing 1/4 to 3/8 No it's supposed to be a inch in from either side . Overlap of next course is supposed to be inch and a half from the lower slot . Wooza

Wrong fasteners. Wrong felt placement, wrong shake placement. Maybe train your installers before making a video. That is a colossal waste of a homeowner's money.
