If everything we tried turned out perfect, there would be no joy with a job well done. Many of the more creative things are trial and error, and while it's no fun when things don't work out, it is helpful that you share them. Little chance of getting something figured out if we all make the same mistakes, rather than learning from others. You make amazing art, and are a helpful teacher.

Nice save/recovery. I think it looks pretty good concidering the flaws. Could you have drilled to the bubbles and injected resin? Just a tip to concider-when you shape the bottom, remove about 1/16" deeper of the outer edge about an inch or so from the sides. This will give your bowls a looks that makes them look as is their floating on a table.

Enjoy some of your things. I do not work in wood I work in threads. When I have a very beautiful,or expensive cloth I do my design in scrap first rather then waste the silk threads and cloth would you consider using a piece of pine to perfect your design idea rather then screwing up a beautiful irreplaceable piece of gifted walnut? Love from mexico

I totally understand where you are coming from. The design was tried and true. The issue came when I got a snag while turning the recess. The camera did not catch it. It set the bowl off a bit. Then the jaws on my chuck were not on right which caused it to be off more. The pitch from pine will mess up a lathe. I use poplar to practice designs with though. Thank you so much for watching and commenting.

@@MoonpieCreations I remember the Our Gang comedies on TV where kids in the 40s would take a hat, remove the inner cork or whatever from the metal caps and press the cap material between the metal and interior half of the caps and they stayed on like buttons you'd pin on a hat.

Great idea. I was thinking leaves. Autumn leaves, with their superb colours. That would be a beautiful bowl. But of course in the States you call it 'fall...' I love oak and beech leaves. And what about paper thin slices of bark? Is that even possible... 🤔

I liked your “save”! Could you have drilled those bubble with like a 1/8th bit and fill them with 5 min epoxy? Just curious. Then all you’d have to do is touch up sanding and polishing?! Maybe? Just a thought.... I do like your vids, sir.
@MoonpieCreations

Hey Charles. Yes I could most definitely do that, but I decided it did not detract enough from the bowl. They were right on the coke logo so I went with it. But it would have worked. Thanks for trying to help.

Curious.. I see a lot of resin work end up with bubbles in it - even after using a pressure pot. How does this happen? Also, you already know it, you could have injected UV resin into those bubbles and nobody would have known?
@MoonpieCreations
@MoonpieCreations 3 жыл бұрын
The pressure pot doesn't remove air bubbles, it smashes them smaller so you can't see them. The vacuum chamber removes air from the resin and wood. So that is why you sometimes still see bubble in a pressure pot pour. I decided in the end the bubbles didn't detract enough to drill them out and fix them. I've never used UV Resin, but have seen it on other channels. I have been thinking of buying some.

I am wondering how it is I never see your chuck recesses blow out, is there something specific that you do to prevent that, or is it just more likely that I need to choose better wood, haha.
@MoonpieCreations
@MoonpieCreations 3 жыл бұрын
Hahahaha I have my share of blow outs, but I will say it is more about the wood than anything. My apple I used in the blue bowl I messed up a few videos back blew out. I like to use a tenon most of the time, but takes less time to do a recess as I don;t have to go back and fix the finish on the rim after I use the cole jaws.

I think the bowl came out great. The problem with any type of plastic is going to be the fact that it will not stick to epoxy. You can encapsulate the caps but if you get it thin enough they're going to break loose.

Do you remember the temperature in the shop when you did a test run of the one bottle cap? Do you think if you put resin in a cap, or whatever next time, and put it in an air conditioned room...there will be a reaction?
@MoonpieCreations
@MoonpieCreations Жыл бұрын
To tell the truth, I am not sure on either question. I think I have used resin enough now that I could fill the caps without the heat up. Well to an extent since the chemical reaction (That causes heat) is what cures it.
