I'm a scientist. I was so delighted to hear that part about calculating angles by hand, having it click into your brain in order to fully understand it, rather than having a computer program doing it. It resonates so much with me. Thanks a lot. (and, of course, the full episode was so much fun to watch!)

What a fantastic result! My math background wants to attack the geometry, but my hobbyist skill level says 'wait a while'. One day, though...

I would love to see the dovetail king Rob Cosman give this a shot just to see how he would approach it. I had so much fun watching this project progress over the last few videos. I'm definitely not ready to attempt this myself!

You did a great job. You should challenge Rod Cosman. Would love to see his take on this. I'll go and try to make a regular dovetail. That's where I'm at. 😅

I love it! Glad you’ve completed it. The only extra detail I’d add is to chamfer the sides of the base, so there’s less gap inside the groove - another use for the bevel gauge😊 So cool.

Deep bow to this mastery! I find this an extremely inspiring achievement, one that I hope I can approach someday. For now I'm still busy understanding what exactly you came up with to make this piece of work. Fortunately, I can watch this video as many times as I need... 😉Thank you very much for this.

Congrats James! Besides the nice result, I'm really appreciative of the self-empathetic words along the way. There's often an unrealistic expectation in too much content that "just follow what you see here and you'll get this spectacular result" - which is rarely the case. Back to my own Nth attempt on a self-designed challenge, but I will respond later with a compound box, probably not dovetailed!

Impressive Project. Al of the math talk almost gave me a headache. For a follow-on, have you ever thought about making a lid for that box? Maybe in another 7 years? 🥴

Oh man, I feel the pain of figuring out those angles. Spent many hours computing compound angles during my time as a machinist. Back before fancy CAD systems and computers it can really fry you brain. CAD makes it sooo much easier, but as you say, not as much fun. Being the lazy dog I am now, when something like that comes up, I'm not against cheating by using Autocad.

Regarding "being a leftie with it" ... I have always been one of thise weird people who is naturally left handed. For me, I always use a hand saw - and other hand tools - with my left hand. When I was growing up in England (1949-56) and then Canada (1956-61) I considered it my normal and I don't remember people commenting on it. It was only when we came to the US (1961-now) that I remember hearing people comment on it, often negatively. But after a while I reached the point where it no longer bothered me. But then there's that time in Vietnam ... At one time my Marine unit spent a while in the field supporting a battalion of Republic of Korea Marines (Much respect to them!) On one of the first days there I was sitting on the front of my vehicle writing a letter to the young lady who later became my wife (for over 50 years now). Suddenly I heard a commotion of a ROK Marine shouting and running away - to find an officer, as it turned out. By then there were a lot of them, and I was relieved when their officer appeared. I asked him what the problem was - and he said the most of them had never seen any person writing with the left hand before! I later learned that there are a number of cultures around the world there the left hand is used for only only for certain tasks, usually the ones considered "unclean". But either way it doesn't bother me here and now. I use whichever hand is most convenient.

There are some cultures that believed being left handed had connection to the devil, and they would shun, persecute, or even kill left handed individuals. The only problem I've had with being left handed during my short tenure here on Earth is with exclusively right handed implements, such as scissors and certain other tools. They can be difficult and irritating.
