Well here you go after some delay my tutorial for the carving of the Native from my "Life Off The Shelf" video.Inspiration for this carving is from some of Jack Prices compact characters and is another great beginner project that lacks the difficulty of eyes and ears etc.I used a piece of Basswood 1 1/4" square by 3" tall and carved mostly with an 1 3/8" OCCTools knife -hope it helps! have fun with it

My grandfather was a carver his whole life, I have shelves filled with his characters. He passed away before I was old enough to learn from him. I’m on my 4th carving now thanks to your videos. Thanks for helping me achieve this goal I’ve had my whole life. Thanks again!

Doug, you’re right about people watching your tutorials even though we don’t whittle. I like them as much as bushcraft and fishing. I don’t do those either. And after I watch I can run them again whenever I want to listen; while I’m working. You have such a relaxing soothing voice. And who cares if they run long❄️thanks Doug

i spent the hours before the super bowl carving this one along with the Dougman...i really thought i could not do this...i followed carefully...and kept at it...got it all roughed out...after hours...im up to the hair and face only...i didnt want to rush it...and mess it up...i really see the figure revealing itself now...i think im going to break KZfaq from "rewinding" Doug's awesome video so many times. I just want this one to come out good. I will continue tonight...can't wait till "quiting time" from work...which i now call "carving time"! Can NOT thank Doug enough for his patient and clear teaching...i hope he realizes how much we luv 'em for who he is and what he does for us!

That's cool! As you were painting, I was thinking that an Elder Native would look great. Give him the silver hair of wisdom... Another idea that I was thinking of was to do a Viking Clan. Love watching the carving as well as the trip videos. Keep up the great work!

Doug, I love to watch you make your little people. Because of you and your wonderful teaching I have started making some also. My frustration is my knives aren't sharpe enough. I started with Basswood but it is too hard, then I have been using balsa wood which tends to squish. I have bought a knife and the sharpening tools but now have to learn to sharpen my knife. You make it look so easy to cut pieces off. I hope to one day to be able to make some beautiful carvings like you make. I know it will take practice, practice, practice. Thank you again for your wonderful teaching videos. Ellie
