DHK knives are my favorite with a flat grind that's perfect for clean slicing flat plane carving.

Mountain woodcarvers have the largest in stock supply I think I have ever seen. Definitely worth looking into.

I am new to the pastime and started with the 3 knife set from Flexcut, almost $60 on Amazon. It was not a pleasant experience, I found little advantage to having 3 knives and the Flexcuts seemed hopelessly dull, thousands of strokes on a strop never got me a fine edge, none of them was ever much fun to use. I recently receive a 1.75" DHK through Mountain Woodcarvers and I LOVE it. $40 for one excellent knife sure beats $58 for 3 mediocre ones, it is truly a night and day difference, carving is now fun and what I had difficulty is now within my abilities. The Flexcuts went back to Amazon. Yes I do have a Helvie on order, but they're about 15 months out on delivery, so I'm darn glad to have the DHK in my hand 😀

Trying to decide between DHK vs Drake detail knives. Any suggestion how best to decide?
@dywoodcarving
@dywoodcarving Жыл бұрын
Both are good options and will perform well. The Drake will be a little more delicate with a little more flex and the DHK will be a little sturdier with a little less flex. The delicate tip on the Drake is very good for very fine detail and getting into tight spots, but if you are a newer whittler you may prefer the extra sturdiness of the DHK. Since both are good options you might consider handle preference and general availability as well.

Great info on these knives. I just ordered a 1" and 1 3/8" detail knives. Looking forward to trying them out. What color compound are you stropping yours with ? Thanks for the video.

I mostly use green compound. Sometimes the Flexcut gold.

Don’t strop often guys - Matthew over @ DHK wants you carving more. I’m in 10hrs and haven’t stropped.

@@marianojurado6202 The edge retention on these knives is very good for sure. It's something I've noticed and love about these knives as well. That said, I would recommend regular stropping even before you can tell that it needs it. That's not a knock on the blades at all, but it's easier to keep blades sharp than to resharpen them and it doesn't take long to do so.

Matthew @ DHK had advised to carve and not to stop to strop every 30/45 mins. They are made to hold an edge. Sharing some information that the manufacturer provided. 🤙🏽 awesome video.

@@marianojurado6202 I see that now. I would definitely support the maker's own recommendations on how to care for the knives. The Treeline USA video on this is very helpful and interesting, I added a link to it in the description of my video. Happy Carving!

What is the handle design name of your favorite 1 1/2" blade. It's very unique and I haven't seen many designs quite like it.
@dywoodcarving
@dywoodcarving 3 ай бұрын
I'm not sure. It was the handle they used to sell at Treeline USA, but they are only selling direct through their website now. The one that looks closest to it there is called a "Mini T", but it's a little different.

DHK medium handles have a larger feel to them also. The name is deceptive comment there’s nothing medium-sized about it. It’s just a name with a good sized handle.
