Full marks for the design and the workmanship. The fact that you used two limbs for each leg at the top means that the geometry at the top part would keep its horizontal plane and cannot rock anywhere, while the adjustable legs means that you can have a horizontal levelled top on any type of ground . I wonder if the guide on the sliding leg could be two on either side, one on the inside much thinner than that on the outside.

I am writing to tell you how much I have enjoyed your videos. With all of the poor quality attempts out there, it is refreshing to view your clever, clear and entertaining videos of subjects I enjoy. I see a lot of “me” in “you,” with your interest in passing along good information about things you enjoy, in a concise and educational manner. I congratulate you on your excellent presentations. Having operated a wood and metal pattern shop, building foundry tooling for years, I always liked training apprentices in what I thought were the best techniques. Something I have noticed in many woodworking videos is how inefficiently coated abrasive sheets (sandpaper) are handled. I always trained my guys as I was trained, to fold and tear 9 x 11 sheets into quarters, using a steel rule to keep the torn edge straight. Those quarter sheets would then be folded into thirds for several reasons. 1. The folded pad was stiffer. This is sometimes advantageous, giving greater, flatter bearing on flat surfaces. 2. The pad does not collapse or wander around under pressure. 3. There is always an abrasive surface in contact with your fingers, providing a better friction grip than the smooth paper back. 4. You have three surfaces to choose from, because sometimes is it is better to use a dull surface. 5. It looks professional, like you know what you are doing. I know this is just my humble opinion, but it drives me wacky when I see sloppy sandpaper techniques being used. I thought I would pass along this observation as I praise your continuing, good presentations. Keep you the good work. I am sure many old timers, like I, enjoy seeing what you are doing, and younger guys are gaining from your willingness to share your methods. Again, congratulations on providing an entertaining and vicarious series.

You can pull that nut (at 2:54) into the piece by inserting a bolt on the other side and tightening it. Make sure to put a big washer and some scrap wood in between so that you don't damage your piece on the side where the bolt went in. With this method your nut will be pulled in straight. Hammering the nut in may cause it to sit crooked, especially in wood where the grains around the hole are orientated in such a way that the wood is harder on one side.

Tripod looks great! Hope you don't mind if I ask a safety question. I am relatively new to woodworking. When you cut the groove for the metal piece, you didn't use a push stick. You just used your hands. I guess this is pretty safe since it is not a through cut. But if you had a kickback (pretty unlikely with such a shallow cut and not going through) the work-piece could suddenly "disappear" and leave you pushing down on the bare blade. Am I off-base on this? Please don't mistake me for a safety Nazi. I am just asking for my edification. ;-)
@Jer_Schmidt
@Jer_Schmidt 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Good question. You are exactly right, if I had a kickback my finger would probably get it the blade. When I made that cut, the first pass I used a push block (I think I showed that in the video). However that felt really unsafe, as I didn't have good control of that small workpiece. Using my bare hands gives me MUCH more control of the part, so the chance of kickback is a lot lower. Personally I think having good control of the workpiece almost eliminates the risk of kickback, so I go for control even if it puts my fingers nearer the blade. But I'm not your safety teacher, so please don't take that as advise!
@mckenziekeith7434
@mckenziekeith7434 8 жыл бұрын
+Jeremy Schmidt, thanks for the reply. What you say makes sense, and don't worry. I understand that my safety is my own responsibility. But I do appreciate hearing others views on it. Provided that the views are thoughtful, as yours are. ;-)

I often draw around the bolt head and then use a router with a 1/8” straight bit to freehand a hexagonal hole. But I’m pretty sure in this case I just hammered it into a round hole. It definitely doesn’t have to fit perfectly, as long as you have a hammer!

Great video, as always. I know you're not a reviewer, but I'm wondering what you think of the Ridgid edge/spindle sander. I love the idea of it but I've seen very mixed reviews. Thanks.
@Jer_Schmidt
@Jer_Schmidt 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks. It's great if you are in a small space and/or on a tight budget. However it is somewhat cheap (mostly plastic) and it isn't that great as a spindle sander or an edge belt sander. As with many combination machines, one option gets in the way of the other. When using the spindle, the cutout in the table for the belt is covered by a plastic pieces which makes for a slightly uneven table. When using the edge belt sander the entire belt unit is cantilevered off the shaft for the spindle, which makes it unstable/wobbly. But again these are all minor gripes and for the most part it serves me well. Just that if you have the money & space I'd say get two separate machines. Hope this helps!
@amargnwalkr
@amargnwalkr 8 жыл бұрын
Jeremy Schmidt That's kind of what figured- I've had a mixed experience with Ridgid overall. I already have a spindle sander, but I really want an edge sander and there's nothing available that even approaches this price point. Guess I'll be settling for a disk. Thanks for the response and keep up the good work.
@Jer_Schmidt
@Jer_Schmidt 8 жыл бұрын
I don't think you'll have to "settle" for a disk. I'd take a disk over the edge belt 2 to 1. I do have a 6" disk sander (disk/belt combo) and I like it except it's only 6" and no dust collection.
