I discuss the power tools I would choose if I kept just 5 for my automata making. This may be helpful for people just getting into making automata or similar woodworking crafts.
The tools I discuss are:
1) Pillar drill. Proxxon TBM 220, modified.
2) Small band saw. Scheppach BASA 1.
3) 1 inch belt sander. Axminster brand but various versions are available.
4) Vacuum cleaner. Henry, drawing through a Dust Commander cyclone.
5) Small lathe. Proxxon PD 250/E with quick change tool holder.
On my web site I have details of my automata and a shop where I sell automata and plans. www.lowbot.co.uk

Yes although a luxury item the lathe is so useful for many little job's, when you think that everything was once mainly hand tools only it makes all the items a luxury in reality.

Hi I agree however I don’t have a lathe. I purchased the plans for “In my honest opinion “ which I throughly enjoyed making so much so I made another trying to make the head and face more female giving lips and earrings although not successfully enough in my opinion still working on it. Again thanks for the inspiration to continue along the automata route. Kind regards John

I’m glad you enjoyed making IMHO. The base mechanism is a good starting point for your own designs. Keep at it. Best regards, Philip

I might swap the lathe for a CNC router. Better yet, expand the list to six!

I would really miss the capabilities of my CNC machines. I’d stick with the lathe as number 5 though as it is so useful. The problem I have with adding CNC as number 6 in this hypothetical exercise is I would soon need 7 and 8. A bigger bandsaw and a planer thicknesser for preparing stock. If I was just starting out it would be easier to do without, which many who are producing the most fantastic work do. There is also the expense of decent software and a considerable learning curve, especially for 3d work - which deters the newcomer but speaks against disposing of the tool once acquired.

A little lathe has been at the back of my mind for years. I've never used one for metal bits before. What are key features to look for? Any deficiencies of your Proxxon?

I am very happy with my Proxxon. I did need to buy a quick change tool post else it would be a pain changing tools. The cross slide handle is very loose so needs holding else the weight of the handle turns it a little. Overall though, for what it is, it is a very pleasant machine to use that can handle brass, aluminium, steel. The Chinese mini lathes are less expensive but I have no experience of them. When I was deciding what to buy the number of guides to how to prep. them before use put me off. You can use the Proxxon out of the box.

No Dremel?

A Dremel would be lower on my list. I prefer hand carving tools for details. The belt sander will do shaping and for me is more useful. Thanks for watching and commenting.

"There's no end to it." Truer words were never spoken! I'm currently building an automata annex on my workshop.

Yes, it is pretty easy to find a need for more equipment. Only constrained by workshop space and finances.
