In this video, I am in the woods for an overnight tarp and bivvy camp with Craig from East Anglian Bushcraft. After a damp and dreary camp up in the hills of Derbyshire, it was nice to return to the familiar comfort of the pine woodland.
Having set up our tarps, we go about the usual tasks of collecting firewood and preparing it for our evenings camp fire. Bangers and mash are on the menu, washed down with some fine IPAs and plenty of laughs and random conversations set to the flicker of the flames - a lovely evening, followed by a comfortable nights sleep on the forest floor.
The morning brings coffee, a hearty breakfast courtesy of Craig and a bit of time to enjoy our location before packing up and heading on our way.
I hope you enjoy the video.
Thanks for watching.

A (not so secret) secret… love the vids and I’m always learning, so here’s one back at ya! Remember Avon? Grab a bottle of their Skin So Soft moisturiser if you get half a chance and say goodbye to those midges, mozzies, ticks and bugs (we have our fair share up in the Highlands and in the forestry)! It’s just a simple moisturiser (unlike Deet or Jungle Formula etc.), it’s good for the skin and works a treat. Cheap, non-toxic, 100% safe alternative to bug-spray that just works (plus your skin will thank you)!

Hi Simon I'm Tom from Scotland, Sharon and I have watched your videos for years. You have helped both of us through very hard times, gave us inspiration to get up and go after very difficult circumstances. We think your videos are A1 honestly, everything you do from kayaking cooking tent's equipment is very well explained. I know you had a wee break for your own reasons but please don't give up as your actually no1 at this game. All the rest are trying to follow in your footsteps but unfortunately they are not you So plz if you can and able to get out there and show the world how it should be done lol give us some more of your talent to inspire people who need it Regards Tom

I just ate but got hungry again watching you with that meal. I want to know what is wrong with heating beans in a can. Plain food but nothing better. What I like the most is that you didn't have to spend time chopping and mixing. Just plain ole goodness. Just so you know, it has become a custom at my house, after watching your videos, to lightly toss your plate so that the fork makes a noise after you have a meal. Certain phrases have also become common here. Phrases such as "Just the ole job" and "That went down well" can be heard quite often around here. Needless to say, you have made quite an impression on my household. Thanks for all you do!!!

The issue with cooking in a can is that you do not want the thin plastic liner of the tin cooking/burning to produce nasty carcinogenic chemicals that then taint your food. If you do want to cook in the tin, it is important to ensure you don't use too high a temperature. A safe method is to put the tin inside another container with water, or as we saw Simon do in this video, place them a little away from the high temp heat source, on his cooking rack. Don't cook a tin directly in a fire or very hot coals.
@RobertsBulgaria
@RobertsBulgaria 7 ай бұрын
If you did a little real on the ground research you would find that MOST if not all, tinned Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce DO NOT have any plastic liner and if they do, it is usually only a thin strip over the weld/join in the can. Other safe cans without any plastic liners include tinned Pineapples and other acidic foods. Dog and cat foods also don't usually have any form of plastic liner and therefore make decent cooking pots, safe to use at any temperatures.

Guess what, during manufacturer, the bean can is pressure cooked and gets hotter that it ever will over a fire, so long as it's full with open lid. The liner on a can filled with liquid should not get any hotter that a can sitting in a water bath. Water conducts heat incredibly well, especially boiling water.

@@swiftandsure9216 WATER! SPROG. Heated mine attached with wire to the manifold of my Landrover or with the Hexamine stove, but to be honest, NONE of our tins had this white plastic lining this lot are worried about. A tin of gnarly sausages tied to a flash bang and hoyed into the local pond was proper Bushcraft Fishing, just scooped the stunned fish floating on the top. I remember being on Salisbury Plains and giving my two 58 Pattern water bottles to the Recce Corporal who got the whole sections water bottles filled in the River Avon. Nothing like the satisfaction of getting a fire going from the smallest spark onto some silver birch bark and feeding with kindling. Made myself laugh when I started forming a windbreak around your fire with my hand. Great vid guys and who knows, maybe one day I’ll go camping in the outback and have a fire. I know it's poison, but here in the states since the bio-weapons idiots released the Texas ticks all over with lymes disease, and they cover half the country now.... I use Sawyers or repell permethrin sprays. I'd rather detox the poison than get lymes disease. Here in Texas I just treat my clothing and bags, but if I'm on the east coast I treat everything and my skin. We really screwed ourselves when those idiot scientists let the contaminated ticks out into the general population.

My mate works in the booze section of a leading supermarket chain. He thinks white wine is only good for sprinkling on your chips. I worked in a canning- factory in King's Lynn back in the late '70s. The sealed- cans of peas, carrots etc would go into a large basket, then into a large vat of boiling water to kill off any bacteria, before being sent on to be labelled and boxed. So unless the lining in the cans has changed from back then, I don't suppose it matters that you cooked them over your camp fire, still in their can. Just looks better in a pot. Glad to see you looking well Simon, after the brief acquaintance with the early stages of hypothermia on the hills.

You can’t beat some Colman’s english mustard mixed in the mash as well, it gives it a lovely flavour

YAY the good old Bundeswehr butter dish, I always remember seeing Wild Ginger Bruce saying get two pack one with butter the other with Trex you can't go wrong, mind you that was back in the days when 'the gang' used to have big fires with roasting joints of meat and many side pots 😇

Only one thing I would add, an egg yolk to the mash, it makes all the difference!

Good to see you on again but why do you always seem in a rush with what you're doing, slow down a bit so it won't seem so much like a chore, do love the cooking in your videos 🙂
