Red-Headed Woodpecker takes opportunity for long bath and neck rub at the bird bath. A very mean Robin, some Orioles, and a Catbird also vie for use as nobody seems to get along.

I'm a Senior lady of 74. Last July an apartment opened up for me in a suburb near my old home. I had signed up for it 2 years ago when I had sold my house and went to Chicago to live.I had 8 cats and refused to give any of them up. So my sister rented me the apartment where my parents had lived. I waited there until most of my fur babies died and an apartment opened up. My waiting list was 3 years. And it happened just in time. I had 2 cats left when I got the call to move in. The place was perfect for me, ESPECIALLY the tiny patio garden that I acquired. I just planted a row of Morning Glories next to my privacy fence and in front of them, I planted red and violet petunias and red and white geraniums to go in large planters. My daughter even bought me SNAPDRAGONS, one of my favorite flowers. But the best part, I set up a bird bath from the saucer of a large clay flower pot. In 2 days, I had my first Robin. He has been coming ever since and with a companion. I can watch them from my patio glass door and now even little sparrows came to bathe. They make my garden ALMOST complete. This morning I heard a woodpecker somewhere on one of the trees nearby. We are surrounded by large victorian style houses with very tall trees. By evening, I was getting ready to make my dinner when I happened to look out to my garden and spotted a humming bird darting around a feeder I had placed for them with nectar. I just new all my flowers would attract the loveliest of all God's creatures, humming birds. Now my garden is perfect. I love my little apartment and my little garden.

He was frightened by the first burst of that theme. He never new Star Wars until he was a teenager. But Space Balls came out right after Star Wars and we had to see the parody. It was funny. @fluffypeanutcat
@fluffypeanutcat 6 жыл бұрын
Felt fortunate to have them this summer. Interesting from what I have read that no one is sure why they should have such a rapid overall decline in population. Yet in some areas the population has rebounded. Having some dead trees in our old tree-belt I assume is why we have them at our farmstead. I did see one immature late summer (no red-head) so believing they raised at least one. Starlings which we have, are probably one of their problems. I know they compete with flickers. I witnessed starlings battling some flickers and taking away nesting sites.

Yeah, it was great to see it slip twice and summersault into the water. I was so mad at it for going after the Oriole chicks. Watching all of this from kitchen window and I almost went outside to chase Robin away. Glad I didn't.

I was kind of mad that the young Orioles coming to the bath that day didn't get a chance to bathe. First a mean Robin and then as you say Woody spoiling. A lot of respect for that weaponized big bill.

You are right! Actually did somewhat of a somersault both times as the brick was maybe angled with too much steepness. I remember watching the robin in it's bullying actions from the kitchen window and almost went outside to yell at it for chasing the poor little oriole chick away so many times.

Thanks for pointing that out. I could see him twisting his head and looking and always thought it was only the camera. I now see he hopped right over to get a closer look at the yellow painted cement duck. I always forget too, that interestingly the male and female redhead are marked exactly the same.

That is great. The male and female are identical in plumage. I am guessing they are raising young in tree cavity nearby. This time of year though young might be out of nest. I have had a pair around the last 5 years or so. Mine will eat sunflower seeds as well as Jelly put out for the Orioles.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p8qegbObvdTVqas.html

with each peck, the bird undergoes a force of 1,200 to 1,400 g's- this force is around 10 times greater than what would cause a concussion in humans. sciencebasedlife.wordpress.com/2011/03/22/exploring-the-g-force-why-woodpeckers-dont-get-concussions/
