The latest vintage woodworking machine to find its way into my shop is a Delta jointer planer.
The machine has been standing unused for some time but I was confident that it would take much to restore it to its former glory.
Restoring a vintage Delta-Milwaukee Wood Jointer.
I am really enjoying these restorations so let me know if you want to see more of them and I will try and fit in the odd restoration video.

You should have put the spindle in the freezer for a few hours. The bearings will go on much easier with minimal force

You have NO IDEA how happy I am to stumble on this video! My brother and I just bought this exact one today, and btw it is from 1950 :) The guy i bought it from had a specific website for Delta jointers that gives you years of manufacturing for any model. 73 year old machine!

Restoring vintage equipment is worth every penny. These restored tools should last another generation or more. Old school quality, heavy, solid, precise, not throwaway crud, is almost never duplicated by modern equivalents.

In the future I recommend using an acid to remove the rust from the machined surfaces. Vinegar will do it over the course of a day or two. Muratic acid will do it in maybe an hour or so. Soak a rag in it, and set it on the metal. Come back with baking soda to nuetralize it. The jointer looks great. I have an older Craftsman sitting in the garage waiting for me to do something with it.

Couple of cheap upgrades are to replace the pulleys with machined instead of cast (better balance and smoother), and replace the v-belt with a linked v-belt (won't warp and smoother). I did those upgrades with my Craftsman 113 table saw and it made a huge difference. Beautiful rebuild. I've got an old 6" jointer built in the 1950s that I'm planning to restore in a similar fashion to what you've done.

A spiral cutter and a new bearing and you'll be all set with the best of the old and new. More restorations would be great for two big reasons. I love to see the old stuff restored plus I think you will be happy with them. Some of the old stuff is just better quality then the new. Add that to the satisfaction of knowing you restored it yourself and I don't think you could ever go wrong. Great job as always.

Oh YES!! Slip in the restorations as you go along - particularly the points of interest you considered when deciding if the machine in question was a viable candidate for restoration. Knowing better what to look for when one happens upon a find can save a lot of wasted effort and transportation. Thanks !!

Very nice job. I restored the same Delta 6" short-bed jointer with the tool obtained from Craigslist and a vintage stand from e-bay. I sandblasted everything myself and painted it with four coats of Rustoleum (Smoke Gray). The company that made the "saturn" fence knob is still in business and supplied one as a sample. Setting the new knives was tedious, but a dial indicator mounted on a home-made jig brought them into spec. With new bearings, the jointer works great, but then, of course, I decided I needed a long-bed jointer. Many thanks for documenting a very satisfying project. And definitely get that knife guard.
