We take a closer look and demonstrate the WoodStone/Ishimori New Vintage Tenor Sax in the VL finish. This Sax is available online via: www.dawkes.co....
The WoodStone range is from Japan and we adore the beautiful touches on this instrument. From the ebonite thumb button, through to the hand engraving and silver alloy neck screw. This instrument screams quality and has a beautifully classy jazz sound. Based on vintage Selmer models of years gone by, this New Vintage is ideal for modern players seeking a retro sound.

I owe one and also a 1964 Mark VI that is amazing and in tune and I still prefer to gig with my Ishimori, what a great saxophone!

I picked up the vintage tenor w/f#, a few weeks ago and I love the sound, response and action. I played a Yamaha 62III for the past four years, which is a good horn, but wow big difference. I don't know why these are not really well known in the states. Or, maybe, I just wasn't paying attention. I've seen that people do compare these to MK VIs. I'm thinking you like to gig with the WoodStone is pitch. W

You mention wanting to modify the thumb support location. Are you talking about up / down? Would this require removal and re-brazing in a different location?

How do you think the Ishimori Woodstone tenor compares to the Eastman52ndSt tenor ? I’d like to hear what you think
@zvonimirtosic6171
@zvonimirtosic6171 Жыл бұрын
They are very different tenors. Ishimori Woodstone is better suited for a subtle melodic lead, with sumptuous tone.

Hi there, I noticed that the Ishimori on your site has no engraving on the neck, did they stopped making it or the one on the video is a special edition? Thanks

I think it's only hurdle is how they're going to honor their warranty. Have many service centres around the world that meet their approval? Or does the buyer buy one ignoring the warranty??
@dawkesmusic
@dawkesmusic 3 жыл бұрын
Hi - They are certainly niche in their supply and availability. However, there's really very little that would need handling from a warranty point of view. These Saxes are set-up really well, plus when the specialist dealers sell them they are also re-checked and so when you get the instrument it will be in perfect working order. After that, any general repair requirements can easily be handled by an experienced Repair Tech. If something more fundamental was awry and needed actual warranty intervention (extremely rare on any quality Sax) then the specialist retailer who sold it (us in this example) would arrange to collect/resolve the issue for you within 2-3 days so not really anything to worry about. What's actually most important is choosing to buy from the best type of retailer, wherever you may be. We help people all over the world for example without any issues. Thanks for checking out the video :)

Nice review. Could you tell me how much heavier it is compared to e.g. a Selmer Mk VI?
@dawkesmusic
@dawkesmusic 5 жыл бұрын
Hi - without weighing them back to back we would say the WoodStone is just a little heavier than the MKVI. We'll try and measure properly and give you a proper answer soon!

Thanks. The few Far Eastern horns I have tried, although they were very cheap, were much heavier than a MkVI.@@dawkesmusic

Hi the WoodStone weights at 3.30kg and the MKVI we have at 3.15kg (both with neck on but no m/piece). There can be big variations in brand (regardless of production territory) but yes some of the very cheap horns from China are very heavy (way above the WoodStone - which is of a different origin anyway). It's also worth considering that some horns feel heavier than they are due to bad positioning of the thumb rest and thumb hook - of course a weight is a weight but poor balancing of it in the design can make it feel worse than it is. Obviously that's not an issue with the WoodStone which feels beautifully balanced. Hope that helps :)

Many thanks again. With the Woodstone being Japanese it was more likely to be of a ‘standard’ weight. I think the Taiwanese horns are very heavy and that includes the Eastman 52nd St one.@@dawkesmusic
