Woodturning - A Birch Burl
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a large piece of
silver birch burl in to a hollowform.
my initial plan with this piece was to make a large natural edged vase but there were too many imperfections in the blank both at the top and the bottom end.
when woodturning a piece like this I like to take away layers until I see what shape the wood wants to be and which part of the wood is going to have the best effect, this is what i find so enjoyable about woodturning.
although this piece ended up smaller that i initially planned my goal is always to capture the best looking characteristics of the piece in the form i feel best fits it. sometimes that means turning a big burl section down to a smaller finished piece.
