I wanted to do a walnut potbelly bowl with a special feature ring. I made alternating chevrons from strips of padauk, purpleheart and yellowheart and it turned out pretty good. But, I wish that I had made the feature ring slightly taller. I used five 3/8" strips. If you attempt this design, I would recommend using at least seven strips at a minimum. I think you'll be happier with it.
As always, thank you for watching. If you haven't yet, please help my channel grow by subscribing. Thank you. I hope you enjoy my videos. --Dan

Thanks for posting and sharing Dan. Thanks for the tip regarding the amount of rows on the feature ring. Also regarding the Rockler sled, I built a 'wedgie sled" plans and idea courtesy of Jerry Bennett. He has an amazing set of segmented videos. Anyway, thanks again and all tips are gratefully received. I'm about to start my first segmented vase, 24 rows @16 segments per row. I wont be using too fancy a wood yet though, gonna build the confidence up. and see how it turns out. I've subscribed and given the thumbs up, well deserved. Good luck with your new channel. Regards and best wishes. T.

That was one of the most enjoyable videos I have seen. I also see that you used Woodturner Pro software. Did you also use the companion software Lamination Pro to design the laminate that was imported into Woodturner Pro?

@@LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft If you don't me asking I have a couple of questions on some cuts you made on the wedgie sled at the 2:39 timeline of the video. I am unclear what you were removing from the chevron pattern. Does each piece need to be cut like that? FYI here is a picture of my first segmented bowl but I really want to learn how to make the feature rings like you have shown. I do own both the LaminationPro and WoodturnerPro software but have not really taken advantage of it yet. imgur.com/R5a6KDd
@LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft
@LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft 5 жыл бұрын
@@edkorsberg6441 Hi Ed, Ok, at 2:39 you saw me cutting the top and bottom of the joined angled chevrons. What I then didn't show was me cutting the ends of each segment at 15 degrees so that I could form a concentric ring. I could have shown that, but I did so, in what could be viewed as, an unsafe manner that I did not want anyone repeating. I need to build a small table saw sled for those smaller cuts. And, I see that you sir are quite the turner yourself! Very nice work on that picture your showed me. Thanks for watching. --Dan

@@LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft Thank you. My first bowl turned out well however this notion of a detailed feature ring will be a challenge for me. I have practiced a bit on scrap wood but so far the consistency of the patterns is not acceptable. The LaminationPro software in theory allows for a bulk processing that ends up with a series of identical patterns. I believe it should work but I still need to gain more experience in order to pull this off. But it is something for me to strive for and I look forward to someday producing bowls on the level you have done.

Dan I liked your segmented potbelly bowl. Could you show or tell how you pressed the rings together? I've made several seg bowls most were successful but I'd like to increase the ring clamping pressure. Thanks
@LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft
@LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft 5 жыл бұрын
Hi, once I have my rings formed and glued together with a ring clamp, I let them sit for 24 hours. They are then run through my drum sander so that I have a nice even surface on both sides of the rings. (I recommend that you do NOT run your glued rings through a planer.) When I glue the rings together, I use a 32 lb dumbbell, which is shown in my videos. That amount of weight provides nice "clamp" pressure. However, if you use too much weight, you run the risk of "flexing" the wood and, depending on how the rings are sized, you could flex either the exterior side or interior side by too much weight, which will leave a bad gap. Let me know if this helps you. --Dan

@@LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft So you find when using it you don't need to glue in halves and sand or any of those other tricks? How many segments per ring have you tried on it?
@LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft
@LivingstonBrothersWoodcraft 5 жыл бұрын
@@avramw yes, but you need to make absolutely sure that your sled is parrallel to your table and blade. I can cut any amount of segments within reason. I have done 12, 18, 24 and 30 segments per ring. I highly recommend it. Dan
