Woodturning a Supernatural Edge Burl Bowl - Mallee and Resin Hybrid

In this video I create a hybrid blank from an Australian Brown Mallee Burl, polyurethane resin and then turn an enclosed bowl. I use a mixture of traditional and modern tools for my turning, using the new negative rake carbide tips from Easy Wood Tools for the finishing cuts on the resin to stop chipping out.

It looks like a desert painting. I mean it looks like I could just walk into it. You turned it in such a way that you captured all the wood’s beauty, but left it open to interpretation. If you ever do something similar again, I would be curious to see if streaks of blue and white would create a sky effect. Brilliant work.

I've seen people try to use color in resin to try to make it look like sky or water before, but I've never seen it look convincing. Either they are trying to use too much, intending to enhance the look, or even the most minute amount of dye is too much for the effect to come across realistic looking. Either way I have never seen it successfully accomplished.

I've mentioned before on other channels that I've always been in two minds about resin works. However this is just a fantastic piece that is totally reliant on the resin work. A beautiful bowl from a beautiful burl, but then completely transformed into a story of bowl making and woodturning on a lathe. The clear view tells so much of the makers story. Just Fantastic - be very proud Jim that is excellent!

It's not only your favorite piece ever, I think this is one of my favorite turned pieces by anyone ever as well. As a pipemaker I work with briar burl alot, but this brown mallee is rather similar and simply stunning to look at!

My god that is divine. I would buy that no matter the price & I'd put it on my bedside table so it is the first thing I saw when I wake. Jim you are a true artisan. I am from Melbourne AU, a bit of a drive from the Mallee but I have been there. Mallee roots burn for hours because they are such dense wood from a desert region.

Thank you very much Geof. Yes this took a lot of planning, I didn’t want to ruin a precious piece of wood and I only had a limited amount of resin left so no room for errors. I was very pleased with the result. Cheers Jim

BEAUTIFUL!!! You have opened my eyes to a great new technique. I love working with resin and I love to turn wood. I have combined the two to make some little spinning tops for my kids in the past but have never contemplated what you have done. Thank you very much! Keep it up please.

I can't help but to share your videos too. Hopefully, you'll get some more Subs from the States. Now I've got to find myself some of that Burl you used on that beautiful bowl. I bet it would make for some very nice Knife scales also.
