As a retired machinist/tool and die maker I was very interested to see how you would do this. I've made tons of aluminum chips with both carbide and HSS so I see no reason why wood turning tools wouldn't work as long as the lathe will turn fast enough.; speed is essential for aluminum. You did everything correctly in IMO. The bowl turned out quite nice. What I like about your videos is you are always trying something new and unusual--outside the norm so-to-speak. Keep thinking that way, please!

Hi Jim, I love to try new thing, sometimes they work, sometimes they don't, but whatever happens I try to be honest about the reasons why so we can all learn. I will keep doing my best to keep things interesting and hopefully with a new tool at my disposal (you will find out Thursday next week) I can make a few more unusual items. All the best and thanks for your support, Mike

Mr. Taylor, I thought that the feed speed for aluminum was .005"/min. Mike is obviously feeding the tool in at a much higher rate than that so shouldn't the rpms be turned down?

I make these hiking sticks with my lathe and I use 1in Schedule 80 and 40 Aluminum tubing depending on type of wood to connect sections. I'm usually turning something like that at around 1500rpm, but all I'm doing is sanding it to polish it for that. But not too long ago I took a piece and turned it down with my regular old chisels for it to fit the interior of my tool rest to make my own tool rest for bowls. At what RPM should I be turning that at? I believe I was going slow since I was actually chopping into it and my logic was that I'd get more of a consistent bite at 750rpm. I'm clearly wrong at doing it that way which is why I'm not really pleased with the result.
@georgewallace5727
@georgewallace5727 Жыл бұрын
@@Ivegotwormsinme Hi. The American Machinist's Handbook recommends speed in surface feet per minute so you would have to convert the circumference of the rod times the rpm. It recommends 400 sfm for a rough cut and 700 sfm for a good quality finish cut using HSS tools both at the finest feed possible and using kerosene as a lubricant. It's the feed rate of the tool that is the determining factor. Use the lightest touch you can and have patience.

This was like a crossover episode I didn’t even know I needed. It’s fascinating because generally makers will stick to their wheelhouse but it didn’t really occur to me that a woodworker uses such different tools and techniques so it’s awesome reading the discussion and advice between the two worlds of metal and wood workers.

Mike, being a retired toolmaker I must say I was rather impressed by this project, and how nice it turned (no pun intended) out, the final polish looks good, you can easily find other polishes that would do the job, such as Brasso or Silvo, any fine polish (including toothpaste) will do the job, as for keeping the finish, a fine coat of clear lacquer will suffice to keep it bright for years with an occasional wipe to remove dust and prevent oxidisation....

Brave man to try turning an aluminium bowl. Very well done. Quite the work-out. No marking on the metal. This may be 6061 T6. 6061 is the alloy which is a very common alloy, and T6 is the temper. An annealed piece of aluminium would have been easier to turn, but you would have to search for someone selling annealed aluminium. Not common even in the US. Most folks turn aluminium finials. You can now appreciate why a small project like a finial is so much easier than a bowl. A couple of members of my local turning club have turned aluminium finials. One member purchased a mag/alloy wheel polishing product which was stated to work well for aluminium. He got a mirror finish on the finial. Looked terrific. He sanded to much finer grits like 2000 prior to starting the polishing. If you want to avoid finger marks I think you would need a coat of a clear lacquer which would also help to keep the polish from tarnishing. As you experienced the polishing is messy. I machine a lot of aluminium, but on my metal lathe. Metal lathe tools normally cut on the point. I normally take 10 or 20 thou cut at a time. I can go deeper cuts, but then not as good a finish. Machinists hate to sand. If you see a block of copper and feel tempted to turn this, but I recommend you avoid the temptation. Copper work hardens fast. A couple of cuts and the metal surface will get hard and harder as you continue. You would need to anneal the copper often. Once annealed it will turn easily, but not for long. Brass is very expensive, but some brass alloys do not machine well some just have awful finish, some work harden. If you see a brass alloy referred to as "Free Machining" it does not mean it will be machined free of charge at a machine shop, rather the metal will machine without hardening. In the US brass 360 alloy is "Free Machining". If I had that piece of aluminium, I would have machined it into a face plate. If you do a lot of drilling in aluminium, keep an eye on the end of the drill bit. It is easy for aluminium chips to cold well on the drill bit which then means the drill does not cut well. I have personally experienced this on my carbide metal lathe tools. Normally easy to clear the cutter with a carbide pick. The awful finish is normally the hint of cold welding. Dave.

Hi Dave and thanks so much all all the useful information, you are a fountain of information. The aluminium was 2011T6 which does not mean a lot to me but seems to be a fairly common variant which is indeed a 'Free Machining Alloy' and now I know what that term means. Thanks so much as always Dave, talk soon, Mike

Retired aerospace engineer and licensed aircraft mechanic here... Polishing aluminum on airplanes is a common thing, so I've been involved more than a few times... Getting a perfect mirror finish on Aluminum isn't possible as the material has a slight milky haze in it. You can, however, get it pretty darned close with the right polishing abrasives (and yes, toothpaste can work, and it will leave your bowl minty fresh, but please don't use of on your airplane). To keep that mirror-like shine on your new bowl would depend on the bowl's use. If it's just going to sit around on a shelf being pretty, a coat of clear lacquer would do the trick. However, lacquer isn't very durable and unsightly scratches are ungood... If the bowl will get handled a lot... maybe a place to toss your car keys at the end of the day... I would forgo the lacquer and use a chemical coating such as Alodine 1001. You can get that at Aircraft Spruce and Specialty Co. It's not cheap, but hey... It's aerospace grade stuff. Don't use the only slightly less expensive Alodine 1201 as it will leave a slight amber tone on the metal... unless you like that sort of thing.

Great to see you publicise this technique. Lovely work on the bowl. As a scratch builder of sailboats and racing cars I used a wood lathe for years to turn aluminum pieces like winches, binnacles, wire wheel rims etc. I bought cheap wood carving toolsets with different shaped HSS ends and custom shaped them for special needs. It was much easier to manually shape a complex curve by hand-held tool than it is now on my mini-lathe. I never realised that I was doing something so unusual! Ignorance is bliss as they say.

@@MikeHolton I think this is a result of how the cutting edge is shaped. For turning wood it has to be much sharper and in this shape it's going dull quicker. Adn when using this kind of cutting edge for turning metal then the wear is even higher. When turning aluminium on a metal lathe with the typical single point cutting tools you don't have to sharpen the tools that often, although they are made of HSS, too. I don't think I had to sharpen the tool in between when I would make this bowl with the metal lathe - even when I would use only one single tool for it.

Just started experimenting aluminium on a wood lathe myself, it's very interesting, especially how despite how clean it looks, as soon as you get to the abrasive pastes, looks dirtier than a 20 year old van. One thing I noticed though, at several points, your carbide tool tips shifted while cutting, luckily they stayed on, but could result in a flying carbide tip... 15:05 is a more noticeable one. In terms of finishing, have you considered anodizing it? Would make it much more resistant to scratches and such, as well as the potential for different colours.

I have a morry thou wants a an engine rebore, do you think you can book her in.... .....because you have amply demonstrated that it is possible. What a fascinating view of metalworking from a woodworking perspective. The final piece looks really interesting, I am slightly reminded of ash trays from the 1970's and bits of the set from Blake's 7 as well though, in a good way. With metal which is very strong and uniform I would have expected very thin walls, yet you left this really solid which I guess pays homage to the original billet (dunno is that what blanks of metal are called?) I wonder if with a car battery and some bicarbonate of soda you could have anodised it? I don't actually know how that process works either... Superb as ever.

I have managed to turn a few items on the wood lathe for my camper. It really is a time consuming exercise and for finishing I take the sanding with emery cloth 180 to 600 wet and dry with a drop of thin oil for the last couple of grits. Then for the final polish I use Brasso with a small piece of teashirt cloth. It leaves a very shiny surface that does seem to keep it without finger marking. Nice job though

That was great and surprising that it only took about 3 hours. I turn a lot of small aluminium and brass things and some of those can take an hour or two. I'm thinking that it didn't run right when you mounted it to the waste block is because you didn't turn the face of the waste block. If there is a local wheel repair/refinish shop near you, they might be good enough to clear powder coat it for a reasonable price or give you advice on a finish at least.

I was really puzzled how the original punch mark didn't ensure it was centred properly. I think I figured out what happened. The two flat ends weren't perpendicular to the sides. So the punch mark was centred on the round face but when you mounted it on the block the rest of the cylinder was at an angle so only the very front was centred not the bulk of the cylinder. It's also possible they were not parallel with each other or that the wooden block wasn't flat.

You must know that metal lathes have been carving not just aluminium but most other metals. Aluminium is probably the easiest because it is softer. You can get a small metal lathe for a very reasonable sum and it would be surprised how much they can do including turning threads on screws. I would suggest for polishing that you use emery cloth rather than sandpaper.

Drill a hole in the center and tap it. Then put a big bolt, like 1/2", in and cut the head off. Put that in the chuck like a worm screw. And also, you can probably make the aluminum softer by annealing it. Might help the turning process.

Hi and thanks for the suggestion, I considered tapping but don't have the tools to do it. The aluminium was tool free so annealing was not needed. All the best, Mike
